A Moment in Time: Being Jewish at Christmastime

Dear all,

I have a confession to make…. I am outing myself as a closeted Christmas carol singer.

Every year at this time of year, I find myself humming Christmas carols. I can't help it. The music is everywhere. And let's face it, with the exception of a couple of really special Hanukkah songs, Christmas music wins.

In fact, most things regarding Christmas come out ahead of Hanukkah. And they should. After all, on a religious level, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. That's huge!

Hanukkah … Well, it's pretty much the same as most other Jewish festivals in theme: There was a terrible war again the Jews, but we survived.

Forgive me, friends, but in comparison, Hanukkah just doesn't carry the same weight.

And yet…. Our Festival still captures our souls. You see, when it comes to maintaining the light of Judaism in the midst of Christmas …. THAT in and of itself is the Hanukkah miracle every year. It's about nurturing our identity – standing up with our history and for our future. It's about pride that we are still here, against so many odds. And while I enjoy Christmas music, I also know that MY music is different – and unique.

So yes, it's ok when you find yourself humming the Christmas tunes. But also remember that Hanukkah affords us a moment in time to count the miracles that increase each night, each year, and each generation. The light is in our souls. Keep it burning!

Ron joins me in wishing you a season of goodness!
