If you look up “Portnoy’s Complaint,” the 1972 film adaptation of Philip Roth’s bestseller, on the Intenet Movie Datebase, the keywords listed under plot are masturbation, neurosis, sex, prostitution and maple syrup. Enough said. Part of American Cinematheque’s series, “The Seventies: The Good, The Bad and The Strange,” this flick makes for an obscenely entertaining Saturday night.

A bleed rail is a moving conveyer that transports slaughtered animals to be skinned, dismembered and eviscerated. The slaughterhouse term is the title of Mickey Birnbaum’s dark play about the struggles of a young guy at the bottom of the economic ladder. Directed by Jessica Kubzansky, “Bleed Rail” not only explores the flip side of the American dream, it also tackles gory subjects like failing relationships, fragile mental health and, surprise, surprise: the meat industry.
