Valley Beth Shalom is launching a hot summer with a star-studded gala celebration in honor of 2007 Men of the Year Jeff Levine and Cantor Herschel Fox. “A Week of Shining Stars” kicks off with a cantors concert tonight featuring Ben Zion Miller, Alberto Mizrahi (pictured) and Herschel and Judy Fox. On Tuesday, you’ll get to chat with these synagogue celebrities in “Up Close and Personal.” The party continues on Thursday with “An Evening of Jewish Humor and Music” starring the Chutzpah Klezmer Band and comic Hiram Kasten. The grand finale, a black-tie dinner and program, is on Sunday, June 10.

George Gershwin is a monumental figure in American music. Some say the composer, who died at the age of 38 in 1937, is the 20th century version of Mozart. Get to know the man behind the music in “George Gershwin Alone” and help support the fight against ALS (commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease) at the same time. A special performance of the one-man musical starring supremely talented Hershey Felder plays tonight in Westwood to raise money for the Los Angeles chapter of the ALS Association.

Jody Zellen’s digital collages have names like “The World,” “Free” and “Someday” and are a unique mesh of pastel-colored drawings, black-and-white photos and stenciled words, sometimes written backward. “Of a Lost Utopia” displays Los Angeles-based Zellen’s multimedia drawings, collages and an animated DVD, which reflect how she reads and reacts to the daily newspaper.

Not far from Hamilton is another Los Angeles gem, except this one belongs to the Beverly Hills Unified School District. Beverly Hills High School is the site for many fantastic theatrical productions, including one premiering tonight. “Deskapades” is a provocative short play festival put on by Theatre 40 Writers Workshop artists. Co-producers Hindi Brooks and Howard Teichman head up the talented ensemble of playwrights.
