NYT Reporters Reveal The Belly of the Trump Beast

The New York Times recently gave its readers three minutes of
“Voices From Donald Trump’s Rallies, Uncensored” ().
Back c. 2010, The Times and other liberal outlets tried with minimal success to embarrass the emerging Tea Part Movement in the same way. But that was the heyday of the still amiable face of the Anti-Obama Movement. Despite the best efforts of its critics, the Movement was, back then, relatively rancor free, unencumbered by “birther” paranoia, and with a positive “Constitutionalist,” low taxes, limited government message. This allowed conservative and neocon intellectuals like myself to convince ourselves this was the voice of the GOP grassroots—perhaps raucous and somewhat naive but with the welfare of the American Republic at heart. Either we were wrong of how things have changed! Now The Times has hit paranoid pay dirt among the Trumpites:
The uncensored video features comments like:
“F— those dirty beaners.”
“F— political correctness.”
“F— Islam.”
“Sieg heil,” the Nazi salute.
“F— that nigger,” when Trump was taking aim at Obama.
“Hillary is a whore.”
“F— you, Hillary.”
“Hang the bitch!”
“Kill her!”
This is truly the unfiltered belly of the Trump beast of white male resentment. Previously, I called Trumpism, “Fascism Lite.” Perhaps that was too kind a characterization.
Recently also, Trumpism has been invading my nightmares.
I’m dreaming of a updated version of the novel/film, Lord of the Flies, with the civilized shipwrecks again reverting to savage status except that this time they are not prepubescent and pubescent boys but grown men.
It didn’t help when I recently saw on cable as much as I could stomach of The Green Inferno—a film about young environmental do-gooders who make the mistake of helicoptering into a savage Amazonian horde. The do-gooders struck me as akin to the NYT reporters covering at their peril a Trump rally. The difference is that, unlike the lucky NYT reporters, all but one of the do gooders was devoured. The lone survivor was brainwashed into the cannibal culture and ultimately sent back as a counter-propagandist into the civilized world where she told anyone who would listen that the cannibals encountered by her and her suspiciously disappeared friends were really as gentle as lambs and wouldn’t eat a soul.
This brainwashed survivor turned-cannibal and cannibal-apologist is to me the equivalent of conservative ideologues and GOP stalwarts who still support Despicable Donald.
I at least won’t swallow that cannibal stew!
Philosophically, the question presents itself: what to do when you encounter a cannibal tribe?
If you are unarmed, you are likely to be eaten.
But if are armed, do you react, enlightened morally and culturally relativistic fashion by leaving them alone and even emphasizing their “noble savage” virtues?
Or do you machine gun the chief and adult head hunters, while sending the young cannibals to boot camps to be reeducate while there is still time out of their depraved appetites?
Of course, in a democracy, the Trumpites can’t and shouldn’t be mowed down. But they should be shunned and ostracized from decent society. And their apologists should be treated with absolute detestation.
