This Reimagined ‘Tomorrow’ is the Hanukkah Anthem We All Need Right Now

Just in time for Hanukkah, the Broadway community has come together to create a version of “Tomorrow” from the musical “Annie” like you’ve never heard it. Performed by Julie Benko (Broadway’s “Funny Girl” and “Harmony”) and Cantor Azi Schwartz of Park Avenue Synagogue with a chorus of Broadway talent, the song is reimagined as a mashup with the Hanukkah song “Ma’oz Tzur.”

The music video culminates in the singers surrounded by Times Square billboards portraying the lighting of the Hanukkah candles. Loren Lester, a current cast member of Broadway’s “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” who is featured in the video, remarked, “As a member of the Jewish Broadway community, seeing all those billboards light up around us in Times Square with Hanukkah candles was so moving, and I pray that there will be even more light in 2025.”

The video was produced by Amanda Lipitz and Henry Tisch of Key to the City Productions in partnership with Seth Rudetsky and the Jewish Broadway Alliance and Cantor Azi Schwartz.

In a statement Lipitz said, “’Tomorrow’ is as an anthem of hope, resilience and community, and delivers the perfect message for this Hanukkah season. With so many members of our global community feeling especially vulnerable, ‘Tomorrow’ serves as a necessary reminder that, even at our darkest moments, the chance for a glimmer of light is always on the horizon.”

Sephardic Torah from the Holy Land | “Al Hanisim” for Hanukkah 2024

This week I wrote a prayer, a special version of the “Al Hanisim” for Hanukkah 2024.

I will recite this prayer every night. I will light the traditional Hanukkah candles, and I will add a special candle each night. I invite you to join me in this prayer, as you light an additional candle each night.

“We give thanks for the miracles on the battlefield and for the redemption of hostages that You performed for our IDF soldiers and for the families of the released hostages, in these days at this season.

On October 7, 2023, when the evil terrorists of Hamas rose up against Your people Israel to murder them and take their civilians hostage to Gaza, You, in Your abundant mercy, stood by them in their time of distress, You defended their cause, You delivered the wicked Hamas into the hands of the brave IDF soldiers, and helped our heroic soldiers bring some of our hostages home. Now, on this Hanukkah, we light an additional candle each night, in solidarity with our hostages still in captivity, praying that they are released from the darkness of Gaza to the light of their loved ones, and praying for the success and safe return home of our brave IDF Maccabees.”

Bring Them Home.

God Bless the IDF.

Hanukkah Sameach & Shabbat Shalom.

Naftali Bennett, Student Voice, and the Modern Miracle of Jewish Unity.

On November 8th 2024, we, (Tomer Zur ‘26 and Noa Foruzanfar ‘25) were given the opportunity to impartially interview the former Prime Minister of Israel, Naftali Bennett.

This came at a crucial time for us. As students of Milken Community School, the past year since October 7, 2023 has revealed to us antisemitism’s ability to reach not only the greater Jewish community, but also to reach our fellow students. Only a week after the events of 10/7, the Milken football team experienced an antisemitic event that involved violent threats and the Nazi salute. More recently, students have faced antisemitism at a NAIS People of Color (PoCC) Conference that came in the form of professional speakers espousing hateful rhetoric against Jews and Israel.

Our Milken senior class, including Noa, has been called to question their decisions regarding where to apply for college. Many of the schools which students have applied to and are considering, failed to stop antisemitic behaviors on their college campuses since 10/7. These behaviors include threatening encampments, physical attacks against Jewish students, or professors who educate on the conflict in a way that ignores the Israeli perspective. College has truly become a hub for Jewish hatred.

Antisemitism is not a problem that Jews have full control over and yet, it often surrounds us in darkness, even during times of celebration like Hanukkah. But, in the last year, Milken has shined a light on Israel by bringing influential speakers to campus that include Israeli Eurovision star, Eden Golan, Jewish activist and best-selling author, Noa Tishby, and freed Israeli hostage, Ophir Angel. Our gratitude to attend a Jewish school has intensified during these difficult times as we are prepared to face challenges that the real world presents for Jews.

However, in the chance we were given to interview former Prime Minister Bennett, we knew it was a special occasion to connect our diasporic Jewish community with an influential Israeli leader. Not until the day of the interview did we know it would be Bennett coming to speak with us. Even so, with the help of Milken’s Israel Education and Programming Coordinators, Mr. Meyerson and Mrs. Vom Steeg, we were expertly prepared for an experience that we are extremely grateful for and will not forget.

Prior to his political career, Bennett was an extremely successful entrepreneur and was the CEO of many high tech companies. He would become Israel’s 13th Prime Minister in the years 2021-2022 and made it clear during the interview that he is on the political right. Despite this, he created the most diverse political coalition in Israel’s history combining politicians from different perspectives and backgrounds; including the left, right, and an Arab party. This way, a diverse set of voices were represented in ensuring a path for peaceful coexistence. Bennett’s actions are inspirational, especially amidst the heightened geo-political conflicts in the region and serve as a reminder that humanity and partnerships for change must take precedence over division and conflict.

During the interview that took place in front of the entire Milken student body, we discussed the current war in Israel, the state’s importance to Jewish communities around the world, and hopes for the future. Bennett spoke in a way that appealed to students, emphasizing how fostering dialogue between seemingly different opinions is crucial in creating lasting peace and unity not only in Israel but in the entire region. This approach allowed him to encourage Israeli and Jewish unity rather than advocating for his own political opinions.

Especially during Hanukkah, Bennett’s words are an essential reminder that ignites Jewish pride as we celebrate and shine a positive light on the world. If we do not continue to unite under our belief in Israel’s right to exist and allow personal opinions to divide us, then this light will quickly be extinguished.

Throughout the interview, Bennett brought the perspective of an Israeli leader regarding 10/7 and spoke to the intense miscalculations Israel made that led up to the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. He spoke on the event being the main proponent of the current war that has been affecting both Israeli and Palestinian lives.

Bennett still kept his message positive as it was one that pushed Milken students to take action. He constantly encouraged students to visit Israel, even make Aliyah, and debunked common myths people hear about Israel. The former Prime Minister made it clear that it is more than acceptable for anyone, including Jews to criticize Israel, but one should never denounce its right to exist. Drawing a connection between Jews in the diaspora and Israel is clearly a priority for Bennett as he emphasized these points multiple times throughout the interview.

During Hanukkah, we reflect on the Maccabees victory in defending Jerusalem, defeating Antiochus, and rededicating the first temple. We can learn a lot from the Maccabee’s commitment to their faith and Jewish pride, as Israel’s reputation and people continue to come under attack. We are reminded of Bennett’s call to return to Israel as we celebrate the miracle of light that Hanukkah brings to the Jewish nation.

Later on, Bennett spoke with a smaller group of approximately 20 Milken students a part of Israel leadership circles and administrators in a more intimate conversation. During the smaller meeting, he refrained from doing most of the speaking, instead he shifted his focus to us, the students. He listened intently to 11th and 12th graders explaining the challenges they have faced as Jews living abroad. At one point, he asked: “When I become Prime Minister what do you think I can do about this?”, referring to social media often distorting the world’s view on Israel.

In this case, we, the students, were expressing our opinions to someone who can enact real change in our future. Bennett empowered us and instilled faith in our abilities to become the future of Jewish leadership and advocacy in highschool, college, and beyond. When we celebrate the story of the Maccabees’ victory this year, Bennett’s faith in us becomes even more relevant as we are reminded of the importance in fighting to protect our connection to the land of Israel.

Today, even as many Jews all over the world will celebrate the coming holiday, some are still losing their connection to Israel. Some may even be convinced to fully stand against the Jewish state. This has become evident with groups such as the Jewish Voice For Peace known for their opposition to Israel.

Now, more than ever, Israeli voices must continue to reach mainstream media in regards to their Middle Eastern coverage and most importantly cultivate connections with Jews around the globe. A united Jewish generation that supports Israel and that can make an impact on the state’s public standing will only come about if Israeli leaders directly form meaningful ties with diasporic Jews (as Bennett did with Milken) and inspire them to stand for their promised land.

Jewish tragedy in the past, most notably the destruction of the first temple which led to the celebration of Hanukkah, has stemmed from “Sinat Chinam”, which in English translates to “baseless hatred.” This is the notion that when Jews throughout our modern and ancient history have been divided, physically or ideologically, we become vulnerable and many times subjected to persecution for our simple existence.

As we reflect on the Jewish victory that Hanukkah represents and the message Bennett left us with, may we remember that our unity will be the best defense against anti-Jewish bigotry. We must maintain persistent in our efforts to unite Jews and create a stronger community that is ready to face hate in all its forms.

Ireland’s Celtic Charm on The Jet Set TV

I am deeply honored to have collaborated with The Jet Set TV on a travel television special that beautifully captures Ireland’s extraordinary beauty and rich culture. This project allowed me to explore some of the country’s most captivating destinations, each offering unique charm and a sense of history.

From the surreal landscapes of the Burren to the awe-inspiring Giant’s Causeway, Ireland’s natural wonders leave a lasting impression. I loved making perfume with Sadie at Burren Perfumery and creating chocolates with Sister Genevieve at Kylemore Abbey. I had an unforgettable dance lesson with Trad on the Prom and hula hooped in the turret of the historic Abbeyglen Castle Hotel.

Ireland’s charm lies in its breathtaking landscapes, rich heritage, and genuine hospitality, making it a dream destination for travelers seeking adventure and culture. Whether exploring the scenic Wild Atlantic Way, experiencing traditional Irish dance with Trad on the Prom, or marveling at the artistry of Malachy Kearns’ handcrafted bodhráns, Ireland offers a tapestry of memorable moments. Every experience feels like a story waiting to be told, and every traveler leaves with their own version of the magic that makes Ireland so special.

Perfume-making at The Burren Perfumery in Ireland!

I had an unforgettable lesson in perfume-making at The Burren Perfumery in Ireland! Sadie taught me how they recreate her neroli-inspired formula, giving me a hands-on experience with the art of crafting natural scents. Beyond the workshop, I explored their beautiful gardens and watched how their soaps and perfumes are made, all inspired by the unique beauty of The Burren. The region’s famous karst limestone formations are unlike anything I’ve seen before—horizontal stretches of stone that look like nature’s puzzle, so different from the towering, vertical karsts I visited in Thailand. The landscape is just as much a part of the magic here as the fragrances.

Dancing with Trad on the Prom, Ireland’s #1 Irish dance group, was an incredible experience!

Dancing with Trad on the Prom, Ireland’s #1 traditional Irish dance group, was an incredible experience! I had the honor of learning from and dancing alongside world champions Evan O’Brien and Owen Gaughan. Their skill, precision, and passion for Irish dance were truly inspiring. With the guidance of the talented Yvonne Fahy playing the bodhrán, Chris Kelly, and Maureen, every step was filled with energy and history. The tradition and culture they embody made it a memorable experience I’ll cherish forever!

Spending the day at Roundstone Music with the legendary Malachy Kearns

Spending the day at Roundstone Music with the legendary Malachy Kearns was an experience I’ll treasure forever! As the go-to bodhrán maker for Trad on the Prom, Riverdance, The Chieftains, and so many other iconic Irish music groups, Malachy is truly a master of his craft. He shared the fascinating process behind his handmade drums—crafted exclusively with goat skins for their superior sound—and even taught me how to play! His passion for preserving Irish musical heritage and his warm storytelling made the visit unforgettable. What an honor to learn from such a cultural treasure.

My stay at Abbeyglen Castle was nothing short of enchanting!

My stay at Abbeyglen Castle was nothing short of enchanting! Meeting the delightful owners, Ronan and Brian Hughes, was a true highlight, with Brian serenading us at dinner—an unforgettable moment. From hula-hooping on my turret (yes, that happened) to strolling the beautiful grounds with the charming fountain, every corner of this historic castle felt alive with magic and warmth. The meals were just as memorable as the atmosphere—every detail made it an unforgettable experience

My visit to Kylemore Abbey was a journey into history, beauty, tradition and chocolate

My second visit to Kylemore Abbey was a journey into history, beauty, and tradition. This neo-Gothic masterpiece, nestled in the Connemara mountains, is a symbol of love and resilience. Originally built in the 19th century by Mitchell Henry as a romantic gift for his wife, Margaret, the abbey later became a Benedictine monastery and a school, housing generations of young women who were educated within its majestic walls. The grounds are just as captivating as the architecture—lush gardens, tranquil lakes, and sweeping mountain views create an atmosphere of serenity and awe. Walking through the walled Victorian garden feels like stepping into a painting, and the abbey itself is a testament to Ireland’s rich heritage and artistry. The highlight of my visit? Spending time with Sister Genevieve in the chocolate shop. She welcomed me with warmth and showed me how to craft chocolate sheep! It is harder than it looks. They also create sheep-shaped soaps, a delightful nod to the pastoral beauty of the surrounding countryside. Kylemore Abbey is more than just a destination; it’s a place where history and creativity come alive, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Ireland.

Lough Erne Resort is a serene retreat in the Fermanagh Lakelands.

Staying at Lough Erne Resort offers a serene retreat surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Fermanagh Lakelands. On this visit—my second to the resort—I stayed in one of their spacious three-bedroom lodges, ideal for sharing with family or friends. Last time, I enjoyed a two-bedroom lodge with expansive views of the picturesque grounds. From the wooden walking paths along the water’s edge, I watched graceful swans gliding across the tranquil lake. The resort offers many ways to unwind, from the award-winning Thai spa, complete with an indoor pool, to leisurely strolls through the enchanting grounds. Enjoy a variety of dining options, whether indulging in fine dining, enjoying a casual meal at the golf clubhouse, or savoring a comforting bowl of soup in the cozy Blaney Bar. Journey to the nearby Boatyard Distillery to savor local craft spirits. Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the famous championship course, designed by the legendary Nick Faldo, known for its stunning Lakelands setting and challenging yet scenic layout. Lough Erne Resort is a true haven, where the stunning landscape and welcoming hospitality create an unforgettable escape.

Escape to the eco-luxury of The Salthouse Hotel in Ballycastle

Escape to the eco-luxury of The Salthouse Hotel in Ballycastle, where the dramatic Antrim coastline meets sustainable living. Powered entirely by wind and solar energy, this award-winning retreat perfectly blends comfort with conscious travel. My suite was absolutely gigantic and beautifully designed. The stunning bed, dressed in soothing colors, set the tone for ultimate relaxation. I loved having a cozy couch, a comfortable chair with a table, a well-appointed desk, and thoughtful treats waiting for me—every detail made the space feel both luxurious and welcoming. The views from my room offered sweeping vistas of the ocean and lush green hills—a serene escape like no other. The dining experience was equally unforgettable. Breakfast arrived on a charming three-tiered tray, reminiscent of afternoon tea, brimming with delicious treats that made mornings feel extra special. And their house-made gin, whiskey, and spirits added a wonderfully local flavor to the stay. Dinner was a spectacular culinary experience, featuring a menu that left just enough room for their stunning dessert creations—each one a masterpiece and a perfect end to the evening. The spa was the ultimate indulgence. A relaxing seaweed bath and rejuvenating treatments left me feeling refreshed and connected to the natural beauty surrounding the resort. The Salthouse is more than a hotel—it’s a destination that celebrates the breathtaking beauty of Northern Ireland while championing sustainability for generations to come.

Visiting the Giant’s Causeway is an unforgettable experience.

Visiting the Giant’s Causeway feels like stepping into a world where science and legend collide to create an unforgettable experience. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its striking basalt columns—perfectly interlocking hexagons formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Rising dramatically along the Antrim coastline, these natural formations are a geological marvel that captures the imagination. But the Giant’s Causeway isn’t just about its awe-inspiring geology; it’s also woven into the rich tapestry of Irish mythology. According to legend, these stones were part of a bridge built by the mighty Irish giant Finn MacCool to challenge his Scottish rival, Benandonner. When Benandonner crossed the bridge to confront Finn, Finn’s clever wife, Oonagh, disguised her husband as a baby. Seeing the “baby,” Benandonner assumed Finn must be a colossal giant and fled back to Scotland, tearing up the causeway behind him in terror. What made my visit truly extraordinary was Neville Mcconachie, a masterful storyteller who brought this legendary tale to life. With vivid detail and boundless enthusiasm, he painted a picture so vivid that I could almost see Finn, Oonagh, and the fleeing Benandonner in my mind’s eye. His storytelling transformed the stunning stones into a living, breathing piece of Irish folklore. Whether you’re fascinated by the science or charmed by the myth, the Giant’s Causeway offers an experience that blends ancient history with the timeless magic of Ireland.

Dunluce Castle stands as a stunning reminder of Northern Ireland’s rich history and mythology.

Dunluce Castle stands as a stunning reminder of Northern Ireland’s rich history and mythology. Perched dramatically on a clifftop overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean, these iconic ruins were once home to the MacDonnell clan and have inspired countless legends. I was lucky enough to visit on a day with blue skies and even a rainbow arched over the sea—a breathtaking sight that made this magical place even more unforgettable. Fans of Game of Thrones might recognize Dunluce Castle as the filming location for the Iron Islands, but its real-life tales of clan battles and the dramatic collapse of the kitchen into the sea are just as captivating. A visit to Dunluce is more than just sightseeing—it’s stepping into the rugged beauty and storied past of Northern Ireland.

Marking the Words of Maccabees

In a speech that went viral on social media and that now has over half-a-million views on YouTube, the commander of the IDF’s Unit 7007 addressed his soldiers in a pre-Shabbat message as they prepared to enter Gaza following the horror of Hamas’ October 7th attack:

“We are in a historic time,” he began. Decrying the holding of hostages and the “deplorable evil” of brutality of Israel’s enemies, looking into the eyes of the soldiers standing in formation around him, the commander invoked the faithful fighters of our people’s past.

“We are not alone,” he then thundered, voice rising with emotion. “Standing here with us – I can feel it – are the soldiers of King David. Here with us today are the Maccabeees. We are here today with Mordechai Anielewicz, the warriors of the Warsaw Ghetto. Here with us today are the fighters of the Lehi, the Etzel, the Haganah the Palmah, all the warriors of Israel from the time we became a nation until today.”

Echoing the Passover Haggadah he continued, “I imagine in a few years, when the younger guys have children and grandchildren, the older guys have their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and their children will ask” were you there when so many of our people were attacked so mercilessly?

The commander then offered a resounding response: “and you will say ‘Yes, my dear son, I was there. And you know what I did? I left my home, I left my work, and I went to fight.’ And they will ask you: ‘You went out to fight?’ And you will say: ‘Yes, I fought the evil.’ ‘What happened at the end, father?’ ‘We were heroes. Battalion 7007 were lions and we defeated the enemy.’ From generation to generation the heroism of this battalion will be told.”

The words of Israel’s modern Maccabees, like those of Matityahu and his sons, sought spiritual strength in the succession of heroes from days past. As the First Book of Maccabees records, when the elder Hasmonean father lay on this deathbed as his children, led by Judah, prepared the battles that would birth the Festival of Lights, he too cited the faithful courage of canonical heroes.

“Arrogance and scorn have now grown strong; it is a time of disaster and violent wrath,” Matityahu began, “Therefore, my children, be zealous for the law and give your lives for the covenant of our ancestors. Remember,” he encouraged them, “the deeds that our ancestors did in their times, and you shall win great honor and an everlasting name.”

Matityahu then, as the IDF captain would centuries later, listed the leaders who modeled unrelenting bravery and undaunted faith: “Was not Abraham found faithful in trial, and it was credited to him as righteousness? Joseph, when in distress, kept the commandment, and he became master of Egypt. Phinehas our ancestor, for his burning zeal, received the covenant of an everlasting priesthood. Joshua, for executing his commission, became a judge in Israel. Caleb, for bearing witness before the assembly [during the incident of the Ten Spies], received an inheritance in the land. David, for his loyalty, received as a heritage a throne of eternal kingship. Elijah, for his burning zeal for the law, was taken up to heaven. Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their faith, were saved from the fire. Daniel, for his innocence, was delivered from the mouths of lions.”

“And so,” the father of Judah and his brothers concluded, “consider this from generation to generation, that none who hope in Heaven shall fail in strength. Do not fear the words of sinners, for their glory ends in corruption and worms. Today exalted, tomorrow not to be found, they have returned to dust, their schemes have perished. Children! Be courageous and strong in keeping the law, for by it you shall be honored.”

As we celebrate over Hanukkah’s eight days the valor of those who rose to resist villainy – in those days and in our time – we mark the words of Maccabees both ancient and modern. By looking once more to hallowed heroes of the past, we continue to stand strong, with the courage and conviction that light will shine forth once more as the forces of darkness are rendered history’s dust.
