(JTA) — Free measles vaccinations will be available in haredi Orthodox neighborhoods of New York City.
The haredi umbrella group Agudath Israel of America organized the service, which follows a measles outbreak linked in part to haredi Orthodox neighborhoods in New York and elsewhere.
The vaccinations will be available Sunday without an appointment or insurance required at Hatzolah rescue service garages in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Borough Park, Flatbush and Williamsburg.
Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a health emergency last month and ordered unvaccinated people living or working in four ZIP codes in the largely haredi Williamsburg neighborhood to get the vaccine or be required to pay fines of up to $1,000.
As of the end of April, 423 cases of measles have been confirmed in New York since the beginning of the outbreak in October, with 348 of the cases in Williamsburg, according to the Yeshiva World News.
The CDC pinned the resurgence on the unvaccinated and those who brought back measles from other countries. The outbreaks in Orthodox Jewish communities were associated with travelers who carried the disease back from Israel and Ukraine, according to the CDC.
Despite institutional pressure, a strain of opposition to vaccines has persisted in haredi communities based on false claims that vaccines are ineffective at best and harmful at worst. Large families, close-knit communities and the complexity of timing immunizations for a family’s many young children also have contributed to the outbreak.
The majority of Orthodox Jewish children are vaccinated, according to statistics issued by the New York state and New York City health departments. There is no religious reason not to be vaccinated. Prominent rabbis in New York have called on their followers to vaccinate their children.
(JTA) — An Orthodox Jewish couple from New York has filed a lawsuit against Spirit Airlines alleging anti-Semitic harassment by a flight attendant on a flight to Florida.
Yisroel Sternberg and Chana Beck and their three children boarded the flight to Fort Lauderdale from Newark Liberty International Airport in January. A flight attendant told them they could not board with the infant car seat they had brought, even though the couple had brought an extra seat to accommodate the child.
Sternberg was seated separately from his wife and children. With his wife now holding the infant in her lap, Sternberg changed to a closer seat so he could help her. He was told by a flight attendant to “shut up” and move back to his original seat, according to the lawsuit.
Another passenger told the couple that he heard the flight attendant refer to them as “the retarded Jews.’’
“At that point, it all becomes crystal clear to the Sternbergs. The flight crew of the flight was discriminating against them because the Sternbergs were Jewish,” according to the lawsuit.
When the plane landed in Fort Lauderdale, the couple were escorted by security, detained and questioned. Their return tickets were voided and they were banned permanently from flying Spirit.
The civil rights and defamation suit was filed May 2 in the U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, the Miami Herald reported Tuesday.
The suit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages for personal humiliation, loss of capacity for enjoyment of life, mental anguish and embarrassment.
A media relations manager for Spirit told the Miami Herald, “Spirit Airlines strives to maintain a welcoming environment for all of our guests, and we have zero tolerance for discrimination. Because of pending litigation, we will not be commenting further.”
(JTA) — Iran said it will partially withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal that the United States unilaterally pulled out of one year ago.
President Hassan Rouhani said in a televised speech Wednesday– the anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear deal between the world powers and Iran trading sanctions relief for a rollback in Iran’s nuclear program — that the Islamic Republic will keep its excess enriched uranium and heavy water rather than limit its stockpile by selling it to other countries.
Rouhani also set a 60-day deadline for the powers to set new terms for the nuclear deal, including easing restrictions on Iran’s banking and oil sectors. If the world powers fail to meet the deadline, Iran has threatened to remove caps on uranium enrichment levels and resume work on its Arak nuclear facility.
Iran sent letters Wednesday to the leaders of Britain, China, the European Union, France and Germany, signatories to the nuclear deal, announcing the decisions. The letter also was to be sent to Russia.
“If the five countries join negotiations and help Iran to reach its benefits in the field of oil and banking, Iran will return to its commitments according to the nuclear deal,” Rouhani said.
“We felt that the nuclear deal needs a surgery and the painkiller pills of the last year have been ineffective. This surgery is for saving the deal, not destroying it.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States will wait to see if Iran follows through on threats to limit its compliance with the deal before deciding how to react, The Associated Press reported.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who vehemently opposed the agreement, said in reaction, “We will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.” Netanyahu was speaking at an official ceremony to mark the annual Memorial Day held at the Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem.
The nuclear watchdog for the United Nations has said that Iran is continuing to comply with the terms of the deal.
There is never a time of year when it does not pay to be eating with healthy habits in mind. However, healthy foods can also have a great taste to them. In turn, there is no shortage of interesting new food and beverage options that manage to be nutritious and delicious – and often fun, too.
Here are 15 of my most recent food and drink discoveries that fall on the Kosher and Kosher-ish spectrum.
Food:

7) Abbey Specialty Foods Cheese The Alvis family has produced handmade cheeses since 1952 at Lye Cross Farm, in the heart of the West Country in Somerset, United Kingdom. Located in an area of extraordinary natural beauty, Lye Cross Farm has been a pioneer in cheese production for over 65 years. The company sources milk from AGW-certified dairy cows – as raised on pasture, not treated with routine antibiotics or hormones — which are fed a non-GMO, organic, 100 percent grass and pasture diet. Its organic cheeses have a rich, buttery flavor and strong yellow color, owing to the beta-carotene in the cows’ aforementioned diet. The artisanal British cheesemaker recently announced its U.S. launch, and the dairies supplying Lye Cross Farm’s new States-bound cheeses are now Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) and Certified Grassfed by AGW. This is high-quality cheese, and it fills all of my cheese-related home-cooking needs.
