A Moment in Time: Hidden Treasures

[additional-authors]
June 24, 2021

Dear all,

My mother recently came across a self portrait I created in my 6th grade art class (photo on the right). On the upper left, you will see the one comment my teacher wrote, “Mouth too far from nose.

No, I never made it as an artist.

After mom gave it to me, I put it in a drawer and forgot about it….

That is, until this past week when Ron presented it to me as a Father’s Day gift, beautifully framed (bottom left) in a way that captures the colors and the expression.

Judaism teaches that the deepest level of understanding is called “Sod” or “mystery/ secret/ hidden treasure.”

My teacher in school didn’t get to that deep level. But my mother did. And so did Ron.

We may never know in any given moment in time that a treasure hides before us. But those treasure are there. In fact, they are rarely hiding. Most of the time, they are jumping out to embrace us! Just open your eyes, your mind, and your heart.

With love and shalom,

Rabbi Zach Shapiro
