(JTA) — President Donald Trump said that his administration’s Israeli-Palestinian peace plan has a “very good chance” of solving the long and deadly conflict.
“With me being president, if you don’t get that deal done it’ll never happen,” he told reporters at the end of the G20 summit in Japan on Saturday. His remarks come a couple days after the closing of the economic summit, one component of the peace plan, that was held in Bahrain. The summit was not attended by any Israeli government officials nor by any officials of the Palestinian Authority.
Trump said the Palestinians want an agreement.
“I know they want to make a deal, but they want to be a little bit cute — and that is okay. I fully understand where they are coming from,” he said.
The Palestinians have not dealt in any meaningful way with the Trump administration since the December 2017 U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, accusing the U.S. of being biased in favor of Israel.
