UPDATE (12:19 p.m.): LAFD determined cause of fire and property damage estimates. Caused by “careless storage” of water heater with combustible material. Total damage estimate is $10,500.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded Monday morning to a fire at the Valley Cheder preschool in Valley Village, reporting no injuries.

According to Brian Humphrey, spokesman for the LAFD, the department received its first call at 7:38am and several subsequent calls from passersby who spotted the fire

“We arrived quickly to find a fire at the rear,” Humphrey said. “There was a shed like structure that was attached to the rear and that’s where the bulk of the fire was.”

Humphrey said that the first 25 firefighters to arrive were able to quickly extinguish the flames at the preschool, which is located at 12051 Burbank Boulevard.

LAFD expects to have determined the cause of the fire and estimates for property damage by Monday afternoon.

The Journal could not reach anyone at Valley Cheder for immediate comment. The preschool does not have a website, but according to ChildcareCenter.us, it’s a small preschool, with capacity for only 15 children.
