A little boy in dinosaur underwear and a face mask stands pointing a tiny gun. A pink bikini-clad bunny pops out of a six-tiered flowery cake. A dog in a basketball uniform stands on a small dune in front of a bright red starry sky. These are some of the playful yet layered works of art that Susan Arena created as an expression of her experience as a woman and mother. Fear, shame and anxiety exist in the same realm as humor, innocence and wonder in an exhibit aptly titled “House Work.”

Opening night reception 6-9:30 p.m. Exhibition runs through Sept. 14. Indie Collective Gallery for Art and Fashion, 6039a Washington Blvd., Culver City. (310) 837-7714. ” target=”_blank”>http://www.museumofman.org.

Although we still have Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to prepare for, the folks at the Skirball are already leaping ahead to our favorite hut holiday with “Artful Dwellings: Sukkot at the Skirball.” Laying out the welcome mat today, the Cultural Center invites visitors to tour three sukkahs built by artists Sam Erenberg, Therman Statom and Marlene Zimmerman. Each temporary structure reflects the artist’s personal experience and aesthetic tastes and provides the ideal occasion to contemplate the themes of shelter, hospitality and thanksgiving. You might also get some great design ideas for your own sukkah!

Open Tue.-Sun. Exhibit runs through Nov. 11. $5 (children), $7 (seniors and students), $10 (general). Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles. (310) 440-4500.
