Celebrities Come Out to Roast TV Legend Ed Asner for 90th Birthday

Emmy-award winning TV legend Ed Asner celebrated his 90th birthday with a star-studded celebrity roast and fund raiser at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on November 3. Asner is best known for his comedic and dramatic crossover as the gruff but soft-hearted journalist Lou Grant, the role he originated on the landmark TV comedy “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and continued in the newspaper-set drama “Lou Grant.” He has also voiced the curmudgeonly Carl in Pixar’s animated film “Up.” More than 400 attendees filled the iconic Blossom Ballroom to watch Cloris Leachman, Mark Hamill, Rob Schneider, Ed Begley Jr., Richard Kind and Brad Garrett lovingly tease the nonagenarian.

The evening benefited the new Ed Asner Family Center, dedicated to promoting mental health and enrichment programs to special needs children and their families. “To be celebrating 90 years of Ed Asner is a very big deal. Being a star for over five decades should be enough. But from his work as an actor, to fighting social injustice, to his fight for union workers everywhere, to making sure the underdog gets a fair shot and finally to his dedication to helping differently “abled” individuals and their families be the amazing people they are. My father has been there for everyone. I think it’s time that we all came out and said thank you. Thanks for the laughs and the tears and most of all thanks for the help,” said Matthew Asner, President of The Ed Asner Family Center.

The event was hosted by Tom Bergeron (“Dancing with the Stars”) who began the evening by joking that “it is said that people mellow with age. We are here to celebrate the guy who didn’t get that memo, Ed Asner. He has 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 5 Golden Globes, 7 Emmys and has played Santa Claus at least 10 times which is more than anyone except Santa Claus.”

Musical entertainment was provided by Darius Rucker, Steve Lukather of Toto and legendary singer songwriter Jackson Browne. Each performed a medley of their greatest hits. The Atlantic City Boys Band also sang hits of the 50’s and 60’s Rock-n-Roll era.

The gala also offered an exclusive silent and live auction, as well as a spirited “Fund-A-Mission” auction where guests had the opportunity to support special The Ed Asner Family Center initiatives, including summer camp for kids with autism and other programs for the community.

Asner was treated to some video messages from celebrities including Steve Martin, Martin Short, Sarah Silverman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Henry Winkler and Al Pacino. It was Paul Rudd who extended the most touching message saying “Ed, I can’t believe you are turning 90. It just seems like when we did a play [‘Grace’] a couple years ago that you were 95. You still are the loving, whip smart, salty son of a bitch that I have always loved.”

Ed Begley Jr. began the roast by telling the audience that “Ed is so old, he knew Madame Butterfly when she was a caterpillar. He knew Baskin Robbins when he had one flavor. The truth is I love Ed like a great, great, great, great grandfather.”

Rob Schneider cited Asner as an inspiration for comedians such as himself and Adam Sandler: “Long before Adam Sandler made his career as an angry man, there was Ed Asner. People could relate to this angry man because he looked like that angry guy down the street and he was angry for the right reasons – in justice, in equality, in ignorance of hate. Ed you were also able to let us know that while you were being driven nuts by this crazy world, somehow everything was going to be fine. And that it’s ok to go little nuts for the right reasons. For all these reasons, people all over America after watching you slept a little better.”

Mark Hamill, discussed working with MGM during the production of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which Asner starred in: “I met (Asner) in the fall of ’74… I had a series that is long forgotten but was produced by MGM Productions, so I was there during the fifth season of ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’” Hamill said. “It was great; I liked his show more than I liked mine.”

“What a night!” Asner said. “90 years. A milestone I never thought I would make. You know what they say… 90 is the new 80. I have seen so much in my life. Because of some very lucky breaks I was able to create a career for myself that I am immensely proud of. From JJ Peachum in ‘Three Penny Opera,’ to ‘Mary Tyler Moore,’ to the latest shows that I have been lucky enough to be cast in. Tonight, to be lovingly raked over the coals by such a list of luminaries is something for the ages. And to be treated to some of the greatest musical talent around from my friends Darius Rucker, Steve Lukather and Jackson Browne was top notch. I am proud of what we are offering with The Ed Asner Family Center. I am humbled by the response and support everyone has given.”

Asner had the audience in stitches after reading aloud a “congratulatory text” he had received from Donald Trump: “‘Dear Fred,’” began Asner. “‘I understand that you are turning 90 or as I like to call it the big 80. I also understand that the event is at the Roosevelt Hotel which is nice, but frankly you should have held it at my Doral golf club – it has the greatest ballroom ever! People keep on telling me ‘Donny what a strong ballroom, maybe when you turn 90, you will hold your birthday at the Doral. I thought that is a great idea as I should just be getting out of prison by then.'”

UK Jewish Publication Urges Brits to Vote Against Corbyn

The Jewish Chronicle (JC) published a Nov. 8 editorial on their front page advocating non-Jews to vote against Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn for prime minister in the Dec. 12 elections.

The editorial noted that 87% of British Jews believe that Corbyn is an anti-Semite and nearly 47% said they would leave Britain if Corbyn is elected prime minister.

“[Corbyn] has described organizations like Hamas, whose founding charter commits it to the extermination of every Jew on the planet, as his ‘friends,’” the editorial stated. “He has laid a wreath to honor terrorists who have murdered Jews. He has insulted ‘Zionists’ — the word used by anti-Semites when they mean ‘Jew’ because they think it allows them to get away with it — as lacking understanding of ‘English irony.’”

The editorial added that as the leader of the Labour Party, Corbyn has “emboldened” anti-Semites.

“Instead of listening to and learning from mainstream Jewish bodies such as the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council, Mr. Corbyn has treated them and their recommendations with contempt — and given support to fringe organizations set up solely to deny the existence of Labour anti-Semitism,” the editorial states.

The JC decided to write the editorial because they felt as though “anti-Semitism in the Labour Party” has become “an afterthought” in the political discussion leading up to the election.

“How can the racist views of a party leader — and the deep fear he inspires among an ethnic minority — not be among the most fundamental of issues?” the editorial states.” That is why we are seeking your attention. If this man is chosen as our next prime minister, the message will be stark: that our dismay that he could ever be elevated to a prominent role in British politics, and our fears of where that will lead, are irrelevant.”

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted, “An incredibly harrowing front page in the @JewishChron as UK prepares for its upcoming election. It’s no secret that @jeremycorbyn is an unrepentant anti-Semite. The question is how British voters will vote when they head to the polls on Dec 12th.”

The American Jewish Committee tweeted, “This should be required reading for all British citizens, regardless of background. But we encourage U.S. Jewish newspapers to reprint it and for all Americans to read it, as well. What is happening in the UK is a cautionary tale for us all.”

At least 10 Labour Party members have resigned in 2019, many of whom said it was due to Corbyn’s enabling of anti-Semitism in the party. Labour Deputy Tom Watson, who had been a staunch critic of Corbyn, resigned on Nov. 6, although he said his resignation was “personal, not political.”

Connecticut Jewish Gravesite Desecrated with Dead Chickens

A gravesite in a Connecticut Jewish cemetery was recently desecrated, WTNH reports.

The desecration occurred at the gravesite Samuel Shlien, who died in 1958, at Agudas Achim Cemetery in Hartfod. Shliem’s remains were dug up on Oct. 31 and replaced with water and two dead chickens, according to Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Chabad of Greater Hartford Rabbi Joseph Gopin told WTNH that such a desecration is violates Jewish law because it’s “disregarding the body, the soul.” He later added, “I hope these people will wake up, repent to God and return the body right away, so we can give the body a right burial and make sure that the body can rest in peace forever.”

In July 2017, 60 headstones were toppled at the Ateres Knesseth Israel Cemetery, resulting in around $10,000 of damage. All but two were fixed. There was no evidence that the vandalism was anti-Semitic.

The Stop Antisemitism.org watchdog tweeted, “Hey [Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (D)] what in the world is going on in your state- bomb threat at a Bridgeport synagogue, swastikas at 12 different schools in a few months span, and now THIS?!”

Man Arrested Over Plot to Bomb Colorado Synagogue Allegedly Urinated on Thousand Oaks Chabad

The 27-year-old man arrested on Nov. 1 over a plot to bomb synagogue allegedly urinated on a Thousand Oaks synagogue in 2018.

According to CBS Los Angeles and Buzzfeed, detectives found a video of Richard Holzer on his social media allegedly committing the act in January2018 at the Chabad of Thousand Oaks. The chabad later moved locations.

Chabad of Thousand Oaks Rabbi Chaim Bryski told CBS Los Angeles that they would have known about the urinating if not for law enforcement. “It was very very ironic and creepy,” Bryski said. Ventura County Sheriff Detective Jeff Miller told Buzzfeed that Holzer wasn’t arrested because he was a “transient. We had a search warrant report number, but there was never a police report.”

Bryski also told CBS Los Angeles that Holzer’s arrest “really hit home” and he was happy that he was “caught before anything could happen.”

Court documents state that Holzer confessed on Nov. 1 to planning to blow up Temple Emanuel in Pueblo, Colo. after he was arrested in an FBI sting operation. He had been posting white supremacist propaganda on his Facebook page, per the documents.

“White supremacists continue to pose a serious threat to Jews and other communities in the United States and in our own backyard as this arrest indicates,” Anti-Defamation League Mountain States Regional Director Scott Levin said in a statement. “We commend law enforcement for acting quickly to prevent this individual from engaging in life-threatening violence. No one should have to live in fear of white supremacy, simply because of who they are or where they pray.”

Michael Bloomberg Preparing to Run for President

NEW YORK (JTA) — Michael Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and billionaire media mogul, appears to be preparing to run for president.

Bloomberg, 77, flirted with presidential runs in past election cycles before declining to run. As recently as March, he ruled out a presidential campaign this year, writing that he was “clear-eyed about the difficulty of winning the Democratic nomination in such a crowded field.”

But now he is registering to run in the Democratic primary in Alabama, whose filing deadline is Friday, according to The New York Times. Although the filing does not mean that Bloomberg would definitely run, he has called a number of senior Democratic leaders to tell them he is considering a campaign.

If he does enter the race, just 2 1/2 months before the Iowa Caucuses kick off the primary season, it will upend an already crowded Democratic field. Bloomberg is a centrist who was a Democrat before running for New York mayor as a Republican, after which he switched to be independent. He recently returned to the Democratic Party.

Bloomberg’s presence in the race may draw votes away from former Vice President Joe Biden, another centrist. He is the second billionaire to enter the Democratic race after Tom Steyer.

Last year, ahead of the midterm elections, Bloomberg pledged to spend $80 million to help elect Democrats. The ads he paid for focused on issues like gun control and the Republican tax plan. One $5 million ad campaign invoked the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting last year. He has been attacked by Republican leaders like Trump and House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

Bloomberg served as mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013, pushing through legislation in City Council so he could run for a third term, which he did successfully. He was a defender of controversial policing practices who also favored charter schools and expanded pedestrian spaces and services for residents in the city.

He founded Bloomberg LP, which would grow to become a business media empire that stood out by providing up-to-the-minute stock information through specialized computer terminals. His net worth is valued at $52.4 billion, according to Forbes.

Following his tenure as mayor, Bloomberg has aggressively advocated for anti-gun violence measures, as well as efforts to combat climate change. In the 2016 presidential election, he endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump, saying in a speech at the Democratic Convention that year, “together, let’s elect a sane, competent person with international experience.”

In 2014, he was the inaugural recipient of the Genesis Prize, a $1 million award sometimes called the “Jewish Nobel.” The award honors individuals who serve “as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews through their outstanding professional achievement along with their commitment to Jewish values and the Jewish people.” He donated the prize money to social entrepreneurs.

Naftali Bennett Named Israel’s Defense Minister As His Party Joins with Netanyahu’s Likud

(JTA) — Naftali Bennett, head of the New Right party, has been appointed Israel’s defense minister while agreeing to have his party join with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud to form a single Knesset faction.

Netanyahu, who heads a caretaker government pending coalition talks following the September general election, appointed Bennett on Friday, the same day of the joint agreement on their parties, Ynet reported.

Netanyahu failed in his bid to form a government following the September election. Though the union with New Right could make Likud the largest party in Israel, it is unlikely to affect any efforts to form a ruling coalition. It would, however, shore up Netanyahu’s position in the event of another election.

Benny Gantz, who heads the centrist Blue and White party, is in talks with various parties but has reported no major breakthroughs and appears gridlocked. He has another 13 days.

If he fails to come up with a coalition by the end of that deadline, there will be another three-week period in which any lawmaker may receive the endorsement of 61 lawmakers to become prime minister. If that does not happen, a new election – the third since April – will be called.

Country Crock Plant Butter’s Tom Wajda on Creating a Kosher, Healthy and Enjoyable Butter Alternative

Newly-launched Country Crock Plant Butter is a dairy-free, kosher, vegan, butter that is made with the oils of olives, avocados and almonds. As alternatives to dairy butter continue to grow and capture more market share, Country Crock Plant Butter stands out because it actually tastes like dairy butter.

Tom Wajda is the Head Of Research & Development at Upfield, the company behind Country Crock. Upfield is reportedly the world’s largest plant-based nutrition company. Wajda opened up more about Country Crock’s past, present and future.

How does Country Crock Plant Butter differ from margarine and other vegan butters?

Fundamentally, Country Crock Plant Butter is specifically formulated using proprietary technology to taste, cook and bake just like dairy butter.  Country Crock Plant Butter melts in your mouth and on your toast in a creamy, delicious way – just like dairy butter. And, you can’t find that with typical margarine or vegan butters.  Country Crock Plant Butter also works in your favorite cookie or cake recipe just like dairy butter.  With typical margarines and vegan butters, they often won’t mix in properly and don’t brown like dairy butter, but Country Crock Plant Butter does.  Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Country Crock Plant butter tastes just like dairy butter!  Typical margarines and vegan butters don’t have the same taste as dairy butter. These products don’t have the delicious, creamy natural taste of butter that you will find in Country Crock Plant Butter.

How did Country Crock get their product to taste and cook like dairy butter?

Country Crock Plan Butter is specifically formulated  to taste, cook and bake just like dairy butter.   selected plant fats and oils to mimic the way dairy butter behaves at different temperatures and in all its different usages such as: on toast, making grilled cheese sandwiches, or in baking pies and cakes.

Additionally, in developing Country Crock Plant Butter, we analyzed the flavor of dairy butter at a molecular level, and then recreated this flavor with natural, plant-based ingredients so our Country Crock Plant Butter has the same delicious flavor of butter, but from plants not cows.

All Country Crock Plant Butters are carefully tested in our test kitchen by trained culinary professionals to ensure they perform like dairy butter in all spreading, cooking and baking applications.

In your opinion, are plant-based foods a sustainable category? What makes it a lasting concept?

We know that plant-based foods are being craved by consumers and expect demand to rise well into the future. Plant-based foods are more environmentally sustainable than their animal based alternatives and are often healthier for the consumer. The plant-based food market is growing by leaps and bounds with the growth of plant-based food outpacing the growth of total food sales. According to data the Plant Based Food Association commissioned with Nielsen reported in July 2018, the total market for the plant-based foods sector market in the U.S. grew by 20% in dollar sales over the prior year compared to a 2% growth for all foods sold in the same channel over the previous period. Furthermore, with products like Country Crock Plant Butter that tastes nearly indistinguishable from dairy butter, we anticipate even more consumers will start integrating plant-based foods into their lifestyle.

What are some of the foods you find Country Crock Plant Butter to go best with? Anything you’d normally apply butter to?

Country Crock Plant Butter can be swapped one-to-one with dairy butter in any recipe! Anything you would normally use dairy butter for, you can swap in Country Crock Plant Butter. It’s dairy-free and plant-based and it tastes like butter. The sticks cook and bake like cow butter as well!

Was it a lot of work to get your product certified kosher?

We worked with the Orthodox Union to certify the product kosher. It is dairy-free and plant-based so it’s actually pareve!

Was it the plan all along to be gluten-free and vegan also? Or was that an organic part of the product’s creation?

The plan all along was to create a plant-based butter that was gluten-free and vegan so consumers could make food that was dairy-free, gluten-free, and plant-based without compromising on taste.

What is coming up for the Country Crock brand in 2020?

We are focused on further growing distribution of Country Crock Plant Butter and continuing to communicate that Country Crock Plant Butter is a breakthrough product since it is a dairy-free, plant-based butter that actually tastes, cooks and bakes like dairy butter.

Is Country Crock Plant Butter used by any restaurants in the Los Angeles area?

We are confident chefs who are passionate about including dairy-free options on their menu are trying our products and using them to make dairy-free, plant-based dishes

When not busy with Country Crock, how do you like to spend your free time? Any recent concerts?

I’m married and have 3 sons, so it’s always great to get everyone out of the house. We love camping (getting out to Maine every summer), traveling (we went to Hawaii this year) and flying (my middle son is a pilot).  When I’m visiting my son at college in Nashville, I love to go to concerts at the Listening Room Café.  The Listening Room is a great, small venue where artists and aspiring songwriters test out their new music.  They are so talented, and I love to hear the stories behind the songs.

Finally, Tom, any last words for the kids?

Get out there and try Country Crock Plant Butter!  Hopefully, kids see now that this is an innovative product because it is really the only dairy-free, plant-based butter on the market that actually tastes, cooks, and bakes like dairy butter.  Additionally, Country Crock Plant Butter is so much more sustainable and better for the planet than dairy butter.  Taste for yourself how plant-based eating can be a truly delicious way to fight global warming!
