Comedy Club Owner David Kimowitz and Family Nanny Stabbed to Death in Suburban NJ

(JTA) — A Jewish comedy club owner and the family’s nanny were stabbed to death in a suburban New Jersey neighborhood.

David Kimowitz, 40, owner of The Stand comedy club in New York City, was found dead on Saturday morning in his suburban Maplewood home. The au pair, Karen Bermudez-Rodriguez, 26, was found dead on the street outside the home, the New York Times reported.

The woman’s boyfriend, Joseph D. Porter, 27, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, was arrested in connection with the deaths and later charged with two counts of murder. He reportedly was upset because Bermudez-Rodriguez wanted to break up with him and used the key she had given him to enter the home where he allegedly killed Kimowitz.

He was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport before he could board a flight to Cancun, Mexico, according to court documents.

Kimowitz’s wife, Laura, and two pre-school age daughters were not at home at the time of the Saturday morning murders.

Bermudez-Rodriguez was a student from Colombia who started babysitting for the Kimowitz family more than a year ago, a family friend told NJ Advance Media. She was in the U.S. to learn English.

The family reportedly moved in to the home 18 months ago, after renovating it.

There had been only 15 homicides in Maplewood, a town of about 25,000 people, over the past three decades, the New York Times reported, citing state and federal authorities.

Several comedians took to social media to mourn Kimowitz’s death, whose funeral was scheduled for Thursday at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston, New Jersey. Rachel Feinstein remembered him as “such a kind and spirited person. He was always so joyous and silly and warm. Such a gift to our community.”

Tapper Pushes Back After Tlaib Accuses Him of Comparing Palestinians to White Nationalists

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) accused CNN’s Jake Tapper of comparing Palestinians to white nationalists in an August 4 “State of the Union” segment, which Tapper denied.

On August 3, a gunman shot and killed 22 people and injured 22 others at a Wal-Mart in El Paso, Tex. The gunman reportedly had a manifesto expressing white nationalist sentiments.

Tapper argued during the August 4 segment, “You hear conservatives all the time – rightly so in my opinion – talk about the tone set in the Arab world, Palestinian leaders and the way they talk about Israelis… no direct link necessarily between what the leader says and the violence against some poor Israeli girl in a pizzeria, but the idea that you’re validating this hatred.”

He later said, “You can’t compare the ideology of Hamas with anything, but either tone matters or it doesn’t.”

Tlaib responded to Tapper’s segment in an August 5 tweet that read, “Comparing Palestinian human rights advocates to terrorist white nationalists is fundamentally a lie. Palestinians want equality, human dignity & to stop the imprisonment of children. White supremacy is calling for the *domination* of one race w/ the use of violence.”

Tapper pushed back against Tlaib’s characterization of his words, saying that “those who believe Palestinian leaders bear responsibility for the incitement of terrorism cannot then let U.S. leaders off the hook and act as if words don’t matter.”

Jerusalem Post Senior Editor Lahav Harkov called Tlaib’s tweet “very telling,” noting that Tapper “talked about a Palestinian suicide bomber (the girl in a pizza place that he mentions is one of 15 killed that day) and, more generally, Palestinians who incite to violence. Is that what she thinks ‘human rights advocates’ do?”

Journal columnist Ariel Sobel tweeted, “Do you think that Hamas members are human rights advocates? Because that’s who Jake Tapper mentioned.”

Zionist speaker and activist Hen Mazzig tweeted in response to Tlaib, “Comparing Palestinian terrorists that killed innocent Israeli teenage girl (among other civilians) to human rights advocates is exactly your problem, congresswoman.”

Tel Aviv Will Screen Marriage Proposals on City Hall Building for ‘Jewish Valentine’s Day’

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Fifteen couples will have their marriage proposals screened on a side of Tel Aviv’s municipal building in honor of Tu B’Av, the Jewish Valentine’s day.

People can apply to have the text of their proposals screened against an illuminated “I Do” backdrop on the building on Aug. 15. Each proposal will be screened for exactly 10 minutes between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.

The application does not say how the proposals will be selected.

Tu B’Av, the 15th day of the Jewish calendar month of Av, was a matchmaking day for unmarried women in the Second Temple period. On that day, single Israelite women would go out in the fields, dressed in white, and dance before the young men, who selected their brides.

Stopping ‘Xenocide’ in the 21st Century

Along with the recent attacks in Pittsburgh, Poway, and Christchurch, New Zealand, the Aug. 3 attack on a Walmart in El Paso appears to have been perpetrated by a lone-wolf murderer espousing genocidal ideologies — but without the means to actually commit genocide. Instead, these solo génocidaires decide to kill as many Jews, Muslims and now, apparently, Latinos as possible.

In the field of genocide research, this is a new, 21st-century phenomenon. We came to terms with large, violent regimes committing genocide during the Holocaust, but these current individuals pose unique dangers because there are few preemptive interventions we can do, and the perpetrators have no respect for the rules of impunity.

Article II of the Genocide Convention, promulgated after the Holocaust, defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” In my 25 years of researching the Holocaust, Armenian, Rwandan and other genocides, there are certain similarities and themes consistent in every mass tragedy: ideology, dictatorial leadership, armed conflict and government perpetration.

The acts of these individual, radicalized men, and the ideologies behind their actions clearly are genocidal in nature, but are perpetrated by one person rather than a government. There are no obvious precedents of lone-wolf génocidaires in Western society. This presents a legal dilemma.

“Creating a term for the horrific acts carried out by these 21st-century génocidaires would be an important step toward recognizing the gravity of these crimes and developing special programs to counter them.”

These perpetrators will be tried under existing homicide laws, but I believe we are seeing a new and different kind of crime — one for which we don’t really have a term.

Unlike international terrorism, a centralized organization with a hierarchical structure does not inspire any of these lone wolves. Unlike other mass shootings such as at Columbine High School in Colorado or the Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, this brand of killing isn’t indiscriminate: The shooters are targeting a particular group of people whom they deem a threat — Jews, Muslims, Christians, black and white. And unlike hate crimes, these acts are expressly homicidal, whereas a hate crime can occur without causing a scratch.

To better understand and eventually confront this menace, we need a word for it. I suggest “xenocide.”

This combines two Greek words to mean the killing of people perceived as foreigners or outsiders. It suggests, rightly, that the act is rooted in racism and xenophobia. It implies the act is fundamentally different from other kinds of killing. It also implies mass killing, because the target is not an individual; it is a group.

It is worth remembering that when World War II began, there wasn’t a word to describe what was happening to the Jews of Europe. The word “genocide,” coined by Raphael Lemkin in 1944, wouldn’t be formally adopted as a legal term by the United Nations until 1946. The term “Churban” came first and “Holocaust” came later.

“There are no obvious precedents of lone-wolf génocidaires in Western society. This presents a legal dilemma.”

By creating a legal term, the U.N. gave the international community a tool for prosecuting perpetrators and ultimately — hopefully — preventing other genocides from unfolding. The word “genocide” also was a way to express an international consensus that this type of killing is a moral abomination.

Creating a term for the horrific acts carried out by these 21st-century génocidaires would be an important step toward recognizing the gravity of these crimes and developing special programs to counter them.

If “xenocide” became an internationally adopted legal term, perhaps penalty enhancements could be brought to bear for perpetrators, along with educational programs, preventive measures and special law-enforcement engagement. And perhaps as a society, we could find a ledge to grab in this ongoing nightmare that has left so many of us feeling like we’re slipping down a cliff.

As UNESCO Chair on Genocide Education, I plan to advance the study of xenocide, so we may develop preventive educational measures. It’s now up to individual governments — in particular, the United States, where xenocide is most common — to begin implementing laws and measures to limit this new phenomenon.

Stephen D. Smith is the Finci-Viterbi executive director of USC Shoah Foundation and UNESCO Chair on Genocide Education.

IDF Says Palestinians Carried Weapons in Child’s Backpack

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted on August 5 that a couple of Palestinians were detained on August 5 for using a child’s backpack to hold firearms.

The IDF noted in the tweet, “Our soldiers noticed them acting suspiciously near an Israeli community, found the weapons, and arrested them. A child’s backpack should hold books, not weapons.” They did not specify which Israeli community it was or any further info on the arrested Palestinians.

According to Jewish Virtual Library, Palestinian children as young as 13 years old “are often involved in violent crimes and are recruited to engage in terrorism by their elders”; most of the time these crimes involve “stone throwing” but there are also various instances of Palestinian teens stabbing Israelis and Palestinian suicide bombers being younger than 12 years old.

Additionally, according to Human Rights Watch, “Islamic Jihad has been linked to at least three suicide bombings by children, including attacks by 17-year-old Safwat Abdel Rahman in Tel-Aviv in January 2002, 17-year-old Hamza Aref Samudi near Mejiddo junction in June 2002; and 17-year-old Iyad al-Masri in January 2004. Hamas has also been implicated in attacks carried out by children. In August 2003, 17-year-old Khamis Gerwan carried out a suicide bombing near Ariel, an illegal West Bank settlement.”

Trump Condemns Bigotry and White Supremacy in Response to El Paso and Dayton Shootings

(JTA) — President Donald Trump said “hate has no place in America” in an address to the nation following the mass shootings over the weekend in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

Trump pledged additional resources to the FBI to investigate domestic terrorism. He called for strengthening detection of early warning signs of shooters and for better background checks on gun owners. The president also condemned video games and social media for encouraging violent tendencies.

He said “those who commit hate crimes and mass murders should face the death penalty.”

Before the El Paso shooting on Saturday, in which 20 people were killed and 26 injured at a Walmart, the alleged shooter posted a white supremacist manifesto online.

In the Sunday shooting in Dayton, nine people were killed outside a bar.

“In one voice our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy,” Trump said. “These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America. Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart and devours the soul.”

Trump said the FBI should receive “whatever they need” to investigate hate crimes and domestic terrorism. He said that law enforcement needs to pay more attention to extremist corners of the internet where hateful rhetoric can flourish.

The suspected El Paso shooter posted his manifesto on 8Chan, a forum popular with extremists. The manifesto was filled with anti-immigrant invective.

“We must recognize that the internet has provided a dangerous avenue to radicalize disturbed minds and perform demented acts,” Trump said. “We must shine light on the dark recesses of the internet and stop mass murders before they start.”

Trump also condemned video games that contribute to the “glorification of violence” in society.

He called for bipartisan legislation to “better identify mentally disturbed individuals who may commit acts of violence.” The president also said the United States needs “to do a better job in identifying and acting on early warning signs.”

Trump called for legislation to restrict access to guns — and take them away — from those judged to pose a risk to public safety. He added that he did not blame guns themselves for the attack.

“Mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger, not the gun,” he said. ‘”We must make sure that those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety do not have access to firearms, and that if they do, those firearms can be taken through rapid due process.”

Mainstream Jewish groups have called for new gun safety laws to curb mass shootings. Jewish critics of Trump have said his anti-immigrant rhetoric and racially charged rhetoric has led to a climate of incitement against immigrants and minorities, which the administration denies.

CW Introduces Gay, Jewish ‘Batwoman’

Batwoman isn’t just TV’s first lesbian superhero. She’s also Jewish. Australian actress Ruby Rose will play the caped protagonist of an eponymous series on the CW this fall, premiering Oct. 6.

True to the DC Comics, the character is gay and Jewish, executive producer Caroline Dries confirmed at the Television Critics Association press tour. In the pilot episode, Kate Kane/Batwoman’s lesbian relationship is established, but her Jewishness is not.

“We’re trying to find ways of incorporating that without it being a huge thing in the story. We want it to feel natural,” Dries said, noting that references originally in the script were cut because they didn’t fit. “In our hearts, we know she’s Jewish and now we’re trying to find a way to make it [work].”

Rose, who is an out and proud lesbian, but not Jewish, has several tattoos that have been altered for the show. “I have one that’s in the shape of a cross and I have one that says, ‘Let go. Let God.’ We’ve made adjustments to those tattoos,” she said.

The CW first introduced Batwoman audiences in episodes of “Supergirl,” and that synergy will continue in “a really big crossover,” Rose said.

Palestinian Flag with Swastika Flown During Latest Gaza Riots

A Palestinian flag with a swastika spray-painted on it was flown during the Hamas-led riots at the Israel-Gaza border on August 2.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted out a picture of the flag:

According to the Times of Israel (TOI), around 6,000 Palestinians participated in the August 2 riots; several rioters threw rocks and burning tires at Israeli soldiers, although none of them were injured. The rioters also launched incendiary balloons toward Israel, which are believed to have ignited a fire in the Simhoni Forest on August, per TOI.

In total, there were 51 Palestinians injured during the August 2 riots; IDF live fire injured 24 of them, according to the Jerusalem Post.

A Palestinian flag with a swastika was previously flown during the April 2018 riots at the Israel-Gaza border; a swastika was also emblazoned on a kite carrying a bomb during those same riots. IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus tweeted at the time, “Moments ago, terrorist #Hamas sent a Molotov cocktail over the Gaza border into Israel. They flew it with their true colors.”

Horrific Fallout of Destructive Rhetoric

First I want to express my condolences to the many families who have experienced great loss this last 24 hours. One minute your family is whole, the next it is torn apart. This is a horrific and sad moment in our history. These many events, far too many over these years since Donald Trump became President, are part of our reality. I find myself continually outraged living through this presidency. Clearly, that lets you know my politics. Yes, I am a Democrat (and proud of it) and will relish the moment Donald Trump leaves the White House, G-d willing in 2021, if not then for sure in 2024, even if they have to literally drag him kicking.

This man, in my estimation, is one of the vilest human beings I have had the unfortunate experience to have to watch and listen to as his narcissistic, attention-getting, and petulant behavior and language smother us from every form of communication – TV, internet, twitter, newspaper, etc. Not only does he seem to suffer from what many psychiatrists would label as a personality disorder, but his continual expression of hate-filled, xenophobic, racist rhetoric, reflecting clearly prejudiced views against people of color, immigrants, those living in poor neighborhoods, women who don’t meet his standards of physical appearance, as well as political leaders and opponents who do not praise him, etc. have a powerful influence on the many already white supremacists who have held such hateful attitudes for a long time. Now they have permission and support to act out on their deep-seeded prejudices.

His most recent rantings against men and women of color, telling them either they govern in vermin-infested communities (such as Chairman Cummings) or that they should return to ‘sh—hole’ countries from where they originate fills the airways with such darkness and creates a climate that is unsettling and unsafe. The man who is a pathological liar and has a history of cheating the many people who have worked for him, believes that his restricted world-view,  the importance of ‘money and power,’ will insulate him from paying any price for his behavior. Like the ‘Emperor’s new clothes,’ he prances around convincing himself and many of those around him (like the cowardly Republicans who never call him out), that he is someone he is not. We see him for who he is – a coward who wants to hide in the America of the past when the Afro-American community was segregated, when women lived to serve their husbands and do the bidding of their bosses, when the Klu Klux Klan ran rampant asserting their White supremacy, and when men like McCarthy, could punish what he considered Anti-American sentiment, impacting Jews, Homosexuals, Communists and Socialists, and particularly the Hollywood community.

The latest shootings are part of the ongoing outrage his followers feel they have the right to act out. The confusion between the right to free speech, right to bare arms and the unconscionable destruction of human lives using army equipment needs attention by our government. They need to act to help limit and set controls to what is a chaotic and destructive reality we all have to live with. Our children go to school in fear and the rest of us have to wonder whether the mall, the theater, the park, or even the street is a safe place anymore. The last time I was in Las Vegas I took note that the long main-street walkway is now lined with large bumper protections I am assuming from hateful drivers running down pedestrians.

His promise to his followers to drain the swamp is a joke. He has more swamp creatures running various departments, for the most part, people of great wealth who don’t identify with the rest of the country. The irony is he promised to help breath new life and jobs into so many who followed him and basically rewarded those of wealth, even boasting at Mar Lago how rich he made them, at the expense of so many of us who struggle to pay our bills and maintain a middle-class life-style. He has convinced this country that the White House has spread its ‘borders’ as far as Florida so he can frequent Mar Lago and play more golf than any president in history. I can’t even imagine how much of our own tax dollars cover the cost for travel and security for him, and his family, so that he can live the charmed life no other president has ever lived while in office. It is shameful and outrageous, not to mention his deficit spending, which is exactly the opposite of what he promised when he ran for office. As a businessman he was always willing to go into debt, invariably losing properties and casinos. His outrageous spending could deficit the country to the point of bankruptcy, a condition he has comfortably confronted personally numerous times.

Trump’s Romanoff style of family loyalty and commitment and his desire to be counted as ‘royalty,’ as expressed by his family run business and foisting himself, and his progeny, in England, upon the Queen, is just a reflection of his need to rule as a demagogue believing he is above the law and can do anything he wants. Don’t we all remember when proudly expressed that he could kill someone on Fifth Ave and get away with it. His support of tyrants and dictators, who are known to murder their own–their families, their government employees, as well as dissidents, is both a reflection of his pathetic and sick values as well as his need to stay cozy with those who could pave the way for further business and hotels in far off places such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, etc. once he leaves office.

I know impeachment is slowly closing in on him, even if McConnell and the Senate will not make it official. I would hope that the Congress would at least ‘censure’ this man for his vile and inhuman rhetoric and leadership leading to the horrific conditions at the border including the death of children. The one thing we learn from reading Torah is that speech has incredible power – it can lead to the creation of good and great and wonderful things and it can also lead to destruction, evil, and horrific impact on people’s lives.

As Bill Maher said the other night, there is such a ‘fatigue’ so many of us are experiencing from the onslaught and horror of both despicable language and persistent attention-getting from Donald Trump. As much as I would like to just ignore it, my values that leaders should reflect honesty, integrity and compassion weigh heavily upon me and eat away at any sense of equanimity, despite the spiritual practice I engage in. How can we not be affected by the chaos, disruption, destruction, and arousal of fear living in the midst of overflowing hatred, including the anti-Semitism that lurks just around the corner. Black, Brown, Yellow, Muslim, Jewish, Puerto-Rican, Latina, Homosexual – we are all prospective targets in this climate.

What does it take to stand up for human rights? How terrified of maintaining your political position do you have to be to not be willing to stand with Democrats – shoulder to shoulder – and tell the world that what this man says is despicable, unacceptable, and will not be tolerated. How saturated and de-sensitized have we become that we tolerate and/or even ignore the leader of our country as he destroys basic human values, our place in the world and pave the way for murdering innocent people whose color or place of origin is different than ours. It was people who ran away from leaders such as him who came to America to begin a new life and create a new vision for a country that would be called  ‘United’ states of America. United being the operative word. The National Cathedral has now put out a statement on behalf of their clergy calling out his racist rhetoric and asking, “…When will Americans have enough?”

As we enter a period in the Jewish calendar that marks horrific moments in our history, great destruction and suffering going as far back as 2,000 years to our Holy Temple, let us take note of what the rabbis teach in Talmud that one of the reasons this structure was destroyed was due to what is described as ‘baseless hatred’ of one other. We now live in a world where the most important leader both models and teaches ‘baseless hatred.’ Shouldn’t we take the time to not only honor and remember the past but to also learn from our mistakes and use whatever influence we have to teach others that division and hatred only bring disaster upon everyone.

G-d help us. May we find the strength to stand and express our indignation and, as the prophets of old, remind those around us when they are following the wrong path. I know there are more of us than of them, the 1/3 of the country that will follow this man into hell if need be. We must take back the most important position in the nation and pray that it is not too late to bring decency, honesty, safety, and integrity back to this country.
