Birthright has contributed $535 million to Israel’s economy

Taglit-Birthright Israel has contributed more than $535 million to Israel’s economy since the trip’s inception in 2000, the organization said.

The contribution to Israel’s tourism industry comes from providing transportation, lodging, food, training, security, entry to tourist sites and air travel during the free 10-day trips to Israel for Jews aged 18 to 26.

Since the beginning of the project, more than 7,100 groups have come to Israel, filling more than 2.2 million hotel beds and traveling around the country for more than 71,000 days in buses. The participants have spent more than $75 million in gift and souvenir shops, according to Taglit-Birthright.

The organization brought groups that boosted the tourism industry during Operation Cast Lead and the Second Lebanon War.

“In addition to achieving our goals of connecting the Jewish youth to Israel and to their communities, strengthening their Jewish identity and creating a network of support for the country through our alumni, the project has had a major impact on our economy and the tourism sector,” said Gidi Mark, the CEO of Taglit-Birthright Israel.

“Not only is the project contributing to the economy and thus providing employment for thousands of Israelis, but it is also an investment in the future. Many of our participants are not satisfied with visiting Israel only once; they fall in love with the country and return for many more visits, and their enthusiasm affects their families and friends who, in turn, decide to visit. In this way, we also create an infrastructure for Jewish tourism in the years ahead.”

More than 17,000 young Jews from 32 countries will be visiting the country during Taglit-Birthright Israel’s winter 2012 season.

Taglit-Birthright Israel receives a major portion of its funding from the Israeli government.

Having Sex Like a Pornstar, Whether You Like It or Not

I recently wrote a more in depth article than I normally write for the Huffington Post on how internet porn has changed the way all of us have sex.  You can ” target=”_hplink”>10 percent of men who visit porn sites are thought to be addicts. The 90 percent of men who are not addicts are our boyfriends, husbands and the guys we are dating. And watching porn has changed them.  And now they are asking us to change too.

Let me get right out in front of this issue and say I have absolutely no objection to porn itself. I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with watching it. But on the other hand, if has affected what the average man expects from the average woman in the bedroom, is this an unexplored problem we need to address? Much attention has been paid to how women feel when they compare themselves aesthetically to a porn star. Many women feel insecure because they look heavier or their breasts are smaller or their butt isn’t as fill-in-the-blank. But men don’t really expect or even want to date women that look like most porn stars. If you’re dating a guy, he knows you don’t look an adult film actress and he’s probably pretty happy about it. The focus on women’s insecurity about their appearance disguises the much more complicated issue that he’s happy with how you look, he just wants you to beg to be choked.

Which is fine if you’re also into it, but if a woman doesn’t want to be called a slut during sex, will there be any men left for her to have sex with?

A man may not realize it or intend it, but studies have shown that when a man watches more porn, his attitudes toward women change.  I spoke with Robert Weiss, the foremost expert on sex addiction and founder of the ” target=”_hplink”>A study was conducted of men who were instructed not to change their lives in any way except to spend more time watching porn.  Nothing special or unusual, just your average run of the mill, highly rated video on youporn.com for instance. The study showed that very quickly, the porn had affected the men’s daily lives and relationships. The men were less interested in sex with their partner/spouse, more likely to objectify the bodies of strangers and reported an increased view of all females as sexual objects, and not just physically, but also in terms of a lower regard for women as people in general (i.e. he becomes less respectful, less considerate of feelings). The inference being that a man who is viewing a great deal of porn will show a reduced empathic connection to women.

Furthermore, we have to assume that despite our best efforts, teenage boys now will grow up seeing porn and not just the naked images of yesterday, but hardcore porn. How will this affect their ideas regarding what “normal sex” is and what kind of sex will they expect to have on an average basis? I was hoping soft core porn might be the answer: If we could get young men to watch romantic sex, maybe we could change what turns the average man on.

But Weiss quickly disabused me of that notion. He assured me my quixotic idea was all well and good till you have to face the fact that “men might not be turned on by that type of porn.” As in, even if women made a version of porn that was romantic and sweet and filled with rose petals, men are not going to be interested in watching it. It seems we just have to accept that internet porn is literally changing the ways we have sex in and what we say while we do it.

So what hope do women have then if they do not subscribe to the please call me a slut flock?  “Any interventionist will tell you, that the idea of losing personal relationships is what motivates most people,” Weiss explained. So if we women want to change the sex we are expected to have, we have to ask for it. We have to say that if you want to have sex with us at all, it has to be of the more skinemax variety.

But this got me thinking: Is there anything inherently wrong with what these men want in the bedroom? If a couple has a completely respectful relationship outside the bedroom, but during sex the husband wants to call his wife a slut and she doesn’t like it, why am I so quick to judge that the man has to change? The study Weiss cites is a study done on increased porn consumption but the research does not prove that having dirty sex changes the relationship between a couple. And anecdotally, my friends were quick to assure me that they felt completely respected outside Of the bedroom.

If nothing negative arises in the relationship from this type of sex, maybe my friends are the ones who should change? Perhaps, the woman is the one who should see if she could get comfortable with a slightly different type of sex and eventually enjoy it. We’re asking for so much from men in relationships these days—expecting them to communicate like women.  Maybe learning to enjoy doggy style is something women should be willing to do for men?

Of course, this has its limits. If a man is asking for something that his partner finds truly abhorrent, he probably needs to find someone who shares that interest with him. But on the other hand, if he’s asking for a little leeway to use some dirty words, should women be willing to try new things?

On the one hand, it could be argued we’d be encouraging men to objectify us by adding this spice to our love lives, but on the other hand, maybe this would counter the issue of men losing interest in a long-term partner. Maybe by allowing them to share it with us, we’ll create even more intimacy in our relationships. It’s hard to know what the answer is but it seems important to start discussing the issue. A societal shift has quietly creeped into our beds and women didn’t get a chance to decide whether or not we’re ready to welcome it in or ask that it be left at the door. Each one of us is going to have to make that decision for ourselves, but the first step is to wake up and realize that, like it or not, the venue for porn has long since left the San Fernando Valley; it’s in your own bedroom.

Barak to meet with Panetta in Washington

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is traveling to Washington to meet with his U.S. counterpart, Leon Panetta, and other key U.S. security officials.

Barak, who left Israel on Monday, is arriving just days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet President Obama in the U.S. capital.

The frequency of such meetings has intensified in recent months as Israel and the United States seek to coordinate their strategies for keeping Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

In addition to Panetta, Barak will meet with Vice President Joe Biden, National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and “leaders of the defense and intelligence establishment, as well as senators,” a release from the Israeli defense chief’s office said.

Jewish school is denied request to change basketball tourney time

An Orthodox high school in Texas was rejected in its request to have the state basketball semifinals rescheduled to avoid a conflict with the Jewish Sabbath.

In a decision Monday, the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools informed the Robert M. Beren Academy of Houston that semifinal games scheduled for Friday night and Saturday afternnon would not be rescheduled to accommodate the team’s Shabbat observance.

“Just as TAPPS doesn’t schedule games on Sunday in deference to Christian teams, we expected that as a Jewish team, there would be grounds for a scheduling change,” Beren’s head of school, Rabby Harry Sinoff, told JTA.

Beren is scheduled to play Dallas Covenant on Friday night in one of the two semifinal games in the boys 2A category. The finals are scheduled for 2 p.m. the next day.

Sinoff told JTA that his school had lodged an appeal with TAPPS petitioning to have the game times adjusted so they would not conflict with Shabbat, which begins at approximately 6 p.m. Friday in Mansfield, where the games are due to be played.

The local chapter of the Anti-Defamation League also petitioned TAPPS. In a letter Sunday to TAPPS director Edd Burleson, ADL Southwest Regional director Martin Chominsky wrote that by adjusting the game times, the association would enable the team to play “without having to choose between competing and observing their religious holy days.”

Sinoff said an informal task force has been formed by the community to find a more acceptable outcome.

Inherit The Earth

Inherit the Earth

Imagine if we were to inherit the earth——-
it’s consciousness, it’s playing, it’s ability for listening to what does Gd say?
Is the world halachic? Does it step in time? Does it have an Independent Existence?
Does it flare up in anger or use Your name in vain—-
The energy that rips people to shreds that I try to control, but controls me instead.

If we were really really to inherit the earth,
would it glow in all directions uncontainable, uncontrolled?
Would the deeper meaning be expanded or Could I ever know?
Or is there such thing as a message that rises and rises?
would i be able to conceive
that the message from the earth is only for Gd
to be given through you and me?

If i received an inheritance
would i even want it?  would it be like the body that I wear and walk with?
would I be invisible? would i have Tachlis?

If I were to inherit what I give to you, is it now so upwards. I give this to you
and is this not what you want, my unblemished pain?
if I laid my heart on the alter of earth
that you made, would you inherit me? Could I be the wind?
could I be your soul? could I be near you instead?
What could begin? What do we merit
when we inherit the earth?

More on The Mormon Conversion – Rabbi Barry Gelman

I have received numerous responses to my previous post on the Mormon conversions of dead Jews. For the most part, they were polite and sincerely interested in dialogue and explaining to my why I was wrong when I wrote: ” “For the Mormons, salvation is simply a matter of Divine Grace. Without any effort, sinners are excused for a lifetime of sins.”

The following is an explanation that is representative of the emails I received. “The Latter-day Saints believe that without Grace, we have nothing.  However, it is because of Grace, that we have the opportunity to be forgiven for our sins.  However, this forgiveness is only possible “after all we can do”.  We believe that “faith without works is dead”.

I was happy to receive the comments and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to dialogue with some Mormons.

I accept this to be the official doctrine of The Church of LDS and I am grateful to those who pointed it out to me.

Being that this is the case, the presence of Hitler on list of those who were or who were to be baptized is puzzling. His presence of the list seems to indicate that a person can live a completely abhorrent life and still be in line for God’s grace after Baptism. If salvation is about works and grace, why put Hitler on the list?

Here is one response that I received to this question.  ” It is our belief that people like Hitler have been cast into outer darkness upon their deaths.  If there is a bottom to hell, Hitler is there…irregardless of whether or not his name is on a “list”. Again, I ask, if this is so, then why is he on the list.

Some explained the presence of Hitler on the list as well as other dead Jews as the work of rouge Mormons who have been disciplined by the Church. I applaud the Church for their action.

There was one that was was a bit more bold in terms of fate of those of other faiths. “Mormons understand that all will be rewarded according to their works. No kind, good person will ever suffer in the next life, regardless of religious affiliation. All are in Paradise and will go to Heaven.  God is just, and good people will not suffer punishment in the next life.”
I wonder, however, if this refers to even the unbaptized?

Finally, I was surprised by two things. I was surprised at how many Mormon’s read this blog….

I was most upset by the fact that the Mormon responders were unable to accept the fact that even without the theological issue I raised, that posthumous baptisms of Jews, many of whom lost their life specifically because they were Jewish, is utterly upsetting to Jews. Some explained that only Jews who were family members of current LDS church members are allowed to be put on the list. I am not sure why this should be considered any less offensive.

In any case, the dialogue has been productive from my standpoint and I have learned a great deal.

One of the most impressive notes was from a Mormon who noted that their personal feeling was the the Church of LDS is not perfect and that there is room for improvement.

I think this is a good approach for all organizations representing organized religion.

Oscar opens up: Cameras, candor and Sacha Baron Cohen

The year of Hollywood celebrating itself reached its apotheosis at the 84th annual Academy Awards, as the films, stars and telecast paid tribute to cinema’s enduring legacy.

Introducing the broadcast, actor Morgan Freeman emphasized the universality of film, spouting treacly bromides (“all of us are mesmerized by the magic of movies”) aimed at highlighting cinema’s “glorious past.”

Indeed, celebrations of movie history racked up the most awards: The black-and-white (nearly) silent film “The Artist” won three of the five major categories, including best picture, actor and director for the French-Jewish Michel Hazanavicius. The Martin Scorsese-helmed “Hugo,” about the early days of cinema, tied the best-picture winner in winning five awards. “Midnight in Paris,” also set in the distant past, earned best original screenplay for writer/director Woody Allen, his fourth Oscar.

Throughout the evening, Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler and Reese Witherspoon, spoke in nostalgic film clips about their favorite movies. Oscar trivia was also sprinkled throughout the show, uttered by an invisible narrator who teased audiences with random facts about movie history. Of “Moneyball,” written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, the voiceover announced: “This is the first time a baseball movie has been nominated for best picture since 1989’s ‘Field of Dreams.’ Will it take home Oscar gold tonight?”

For some, the evening’s self-reverential tone was neither surprising nor off-putting. CNN host Piers Morgan Tweeted during the ceremony: “This #Oscars has been typically narcisstic, awkward, self-congratulatory, simpering & overblown — and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”

While critics pounced on the ceremony’s old-school antics (“Out with the new. Back with the old,” The New York Times declared; “Welcome to the most boring Oscars ever!” entertainment blogger Nikki Finke carped), the academy was eager to exploit its historic cachet.

“In good times, in hard times, the movies have always been there for us,” Billy Crystal, who returned to host the Oscars for the ninth time, said in his opening act. “Nothing can take the sting out of the world’s economic problems like watching millionaires present each other with golden statues.”

But rather than shrink from past criticism that the Oscars have become outmoded and out of touch, directed by the tastes of white men over 60, as a recent Los Angeles Times study revealed, this year’s producers, Brian Grazer and Don Mischer, used Oscar’s reputation for self-aggrandizement and exclusivity to their advantage. The idea, it seems, was to highlight the annual ritual’s glamor and importance by giving viewers frame-by-frame access to the inside: The Oscars meets reality TV.

In yet another attempt to try to draw new, younger viewers into the fold, the producers borrowed a trick from Facebook and produced the most transparent Academy Awards ever.

Before the broadcast officially began, ABC cameras took audiences backstage to the Oscar control room, where a headset-wearing Mischer said they’d been rehearsing for four-and-a-half months. Moments later, Tom Hanks led a behind-the-scenes tour to the room where winners meet the press. And elsewhere, ABC correspondents were conducting interviews not only from the red carpet, but also inside the theater; first up was comedian Chris Rock, followed by Grazer, who candidly confessed, “I’m really nervous,” just minutes before show time.

The all-access pass continued online, where downloading the official Oscar app enabled viewers to select from a range of camera angles so they could spy on the whole scene. Smartphone and tablet users could spot the stars in line for drinks at the “lobby bar” or ogle those designer gowns as they made their way through the theater’s “grand entrance.” Streaming feeds fed the information appetite, culling continuously from Twitter and ABC’s news feed, which featured minute-to-minute updates, such as, “Gary Oldman is talking to [ABC correspondent] Dave.” Engaging the social networking generation would prove their PR savvy: When presenter Angelina Jolie exposed some thigh in a high-slit Versace gown, Twitter went all a-Tweet, at the rate of 3,399 Tweets per minute.

Even commercial breaks were opportunities, when viewers could ignore those coveted ad spots and switch their sights to the iPad, where an audience cam showed celebrities milling about the theater. Look, there’s George Clooney kibitzing with Brad Pitt.

And if that wasn’t enough to lure young viewers, teen pop sensation Justin Bieber makes an appearance in Crystal’s opening montage. “I’m here to get you the 18-to-24 demographic,” Bieber says, during a mock scene from “Midnight in Paris.” When Bieber invites Crystal to visit Hemingway and Fitzgerald, Crystal pokes fun at the anachronism (and the presumption that Bieber’s generation has actually read Hemingway or Fitzgerald) with the wry reply, “And then we’re going to kill Hitler.”

For all the self-celebration, however, references to Jewish Hollywood were few and far between. After an elaborate performance by Cirque du Soleil, Crystal offered a run-of-the-mill punch line, “We’re a pony away from being a bar mitzvah,” he said, mocking Jewish Hollywood’s penchant for extravagant events.

The best joke of the evening came before the broadcast began, courtesy of actor Sacha Baron Cohen, whose much-publicized plans to walk the red carpet in character as “The Dictator” (the title of his upcoming film satirizing a Middle Eastern despot) nearly got him banned from the ceremony. A possible public relations disaster forced the academy to relent, and Baron Cohen appeared as planned, dumping the fake ashes of former North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il all over Ryan Seacrest. “Now when people ask what you are wearing,” the “Dictator” hissed at Seacrest. “You will say Kim Jong Il!”

For an industry that prides itself on progressive politics and titillation, the Academy Awards are regrettably tame. The edgiest move of the night was awarding Iran’s “A Separation” the best foreign-language film Oscar when elsewhere in the world, the country conjures images of weapons and war. Perhaps Bad Jewish Boy Brett Ratner might have spiced things up, but he lost his shot between a gay slur and a lewd misogynistic rant on the Howard Stern show.

So how can Oscar increase its 39.3 million viewers next year? Maybe Baron Cohen has some ideas.

Political time-saver: This short post will save you reading many long stories

1.

In the coming days, maybe weeks, you’ll hear many versions of this same question: Can Santorum win over Jewish voters? To save you the time and the trouble of reading all related stories here’s the answer: Yes, he can win over some voters – Santorum had some Jewish backers when he was running for the Senate and these backers will support him again today, both with their money and with their ballot. No, he can’t win over most Jewish voters. Besides, Jewish votes (and money) are not likely to count much in an Obama-Santorum race.

2.

When Netanyahu visits Washington, a lot of ink will be wasted yet again on the will-he-won’t-he attack Iran question. Don’t waste the effort. Next week will not be the decision time yet.

3.

It’s an election year, the Iran situation is at a very sensitive stage; you shouldn’t believe any of the official speakers (Netanyahu, Obama, Panetta) at the AIPAC conference next week. It’s not that they don’t want to tell you the truth – it’s just that they can’t.

Innocent Flesh, Not so Innocent

When Kenyetta Lethridge wrote the play “Innocent Flesh”, I doubt she even realized the strong and gripping impact it would have on her audience.  After playing in Los Angeles for several months, it is now set to be featured in New York City off Broadway as well.  With a bare set, and minimal visuals to distract the viewers from this poignant story, four strong and brilliant actresses mesmerized us into the lives and horrors of human trafficking.

The story starts with four women who are character playing as small girls dancing and laughing during recess and then morphs into a chilling reality of their lives later, as young teenagers forced into sexual slave labor.  We get a glimpse of young innocence that is manipulated into a world of prostitution, child molestation, and sexual battery.  The actresses managed to play dual roles throughout the performance that were not only flawless but so well done, you actually forgot you were watching fiction.

When the play ended and the lights came up, I sat unable to speak and silent.  I was mesmerized by the performances and horrified by the reality that this world was based on very real stories that happen everyday in our own backyards.

Kenyetta not only wrote the play but directed it as well.  She managed to weave the story between the perfect group of characters. Each girl represented an emotional preciousness that everyone could relate to.  They were innocent, strong, vulnerable and damaged but all looking for the same very real need – “I just want someone to love me,” was a line said by each character at the beginning and at the closing of the narrative.

The vulnerable and naive character who thought prostitution wasn’t “So bad,” was played by the very brilliant Daphne Gabriel. Angelina Prendergas who also choreographed the dance sequences flawlessly played the strong rough and tough young teen who ran away from an abusive father that murdered her family.  When asked how she manages to morph into this abused young woman and still stay sane off the stage, she said “Other girls are living through this right now, I can do it for an hour.”

Jameelah Nuriddin gave a flawless performance that left me speechless when she portrayed a nine-year-old girl forced into prostitution from her drug addicted mother.  “Where does the blame land…it’s up to us to care for our youth today, because they are our future,” Jameelah said after the play.

Of course the most riveting and disturbing scene was flawlessly played by the brilliant Clara Gabrielle when her character was gang raped and then turned away from her middle class parents as a result of their shame.  Her vulnerability on stage was naked and bare and she managed to draw us in with an authenticity that created depth and a glimpse into the world of abuse and exploitation. “Clara, if you could say one thing to a young girl struggling in the world of human trafficking, what would it be,” I asked.  “Hang on. Don’t let people take away faith in yourself, hang on, hang on.”

Shame is for the silent and scared.  Kennyetta, Clara, Angelina, Jameelah, and Daphne along with producers Diana C Zollicoffer and Michael Mann remind us that pain is meant to be transformed through action rather than hide away from with inaction. Art is not just meant to entertain us, it is meant to teach us and give us something to think about.  It is meant to inspire change and give us a glimpse into unthinkable worlds so that we take initiative and ignite conversation and action.

Innocent Flesh opens March 15th at the Actor’s Temple Theater in New York City.

Farrakhan The Anti-Semite

He said it, we didn’t.

At a speech Sunday, Feb. 26 to thousands of followers in Chicago, Farrakhan acknowledged that “they call me ‘Farrakhan the anti-semite,’  ‘Farrakhan the hater.’”

Hey, you know what?  They’re right!

In this latest speech, Farrakhan, 78, accused Jews of being behind plots to assassinate President Barack Obama, of taking over and destroying Hollywood, and of basically ruining society.

According to the Chicago Tribune:

Farrakhan drew a distinction between noble Jews and followers of “the synagogue of Satan,” and he pointed to a recent incident in which the publisher of a Jewish magazine suggested Israeli security forces could help preserve Israel by killing Obama. He attacked Israeli policies, while also directing criticism at perceived Jewish influence in the U.S.

“Jewish people were not the origin of Hollywood, but they took it over,” he said, blaming the entertainment industry for degrading the country’s morality.

As evidence of the assassination plot, Farrakhan pointed to an editorial written by former Atlanta Jewish Times publisher Andrew Adler in which he imagined a far-fetched scenario in which Israel would kill Obama in order to install Vice President Joe Biden as President.

“Who heard about that?!” Farrakhan shouted to his audience.  “Not too many of you.  Why the hell didn’t the media tell you about what that man said about killing the man in the White House?  Talk back to me!  It’s because they protect their own regardless of their evil!”

By “they” Farrakhan means “Jews.”

If someone who was actually in that audience or swayed by the puffed-up minister’s rant is reading this, just allow us to point out:

1. The Andrew Adler story was reported EVERYWHERE.  Google it: a million web pages will come up.  Within one day of Adler’s inane attempt at humor, he was fired.  The entire organized Jewish community of Atlanta called for Adler’s ouster.  Who will ‘fire’ Farrakhan for his hateful comments?

2. Jewish voters voted 80 percent for Obama in 2008, more than any voting bloc other than black Americans.  Jews still support Obama far more than any other voting bloc other than black Americans. Where is the hatred Farrakhan speaks of?

3.  Jews WERE the origin of Hollywood. They didn’t take it over.  The founders of the great Hollywood studios were almost all Jewish, many of them from the same area of Eastern Europe.  The movie industry is one of the great cultural contributions of the Jewish immigrant to America and the world.  Jews don’t control Hollywood—it’s a complex industry.  But thank God SOMEONE invented it.  Otherwise, for entertainment, we’d just have to sit around and watch YouTube clips of Louis Farrakhan.

4. Finally, Louis Farrakhan hasn’t found any way to get attention other than one of the oldest ways—vicious anti-semitism. Instead of inspiring and opening up the hearts of his followers with his God-given gifts of eloquence and charisma, he turns them against their fellow Americans.  Shame on him.
