Senate bill allows Holocaust survivors to sue for unpaid claims

A bill that would give Holocaust survivors the right to sue European companies for unpaid life insurance claims was introduced in the U.S. Senate. Sen. Bill Nelson (D.-Fla.) offered the bill on the floor of the Senate Wednesday, two days before a planned protest by Holocaust survivors at a Nelson fundraising event in Miami Beach with President Obama, the Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Judge pulls himself out of kosher vendor suit against Mets

A federal judge reportedly has recused himself from a lawsuit brought by a kosher vendor against the New York Mets. Brooklyn Magistrate Judge Andrew Carter stepped down from the case after the lawyer for Kosher Foods Inc., which is suing the Mets for preventing the company from selling kosher hot dogs at CitiField on Friday nights and Saturday, saw him wearing a Mets cap outside of the courthouse, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

‘Day of Rage’ supports West Bank outposts

Demonstrators blocked highways and train routes in a \”Day of Rage\” called by Israeli settler leaders to protest the demolition of illegal structures at a West Bank outpost. Some 15 demonstrators blocked the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway Thursday morning, kicking off what was billed as a day of protests against Monday\’s demolition of structures at the Gilad Farm outpost in the northern West Bank. Burning tires reportedly also were placed on the highway, and several demonstrators blocked train tracks between Ben Gurion Airport and Modiin.

Pete Seeger clarifies position on boycotting Israel

Folk music icon Pete Seeger, quoted earlier this week as saying that he supports a boycott of Israel, told JTA that his position on Israel is constantly evolving. Earlier this week, the pro-Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement group Adalah-NY reported that Seeger met recently with representatives from the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and told them that he “supports” the anti-Israel BDS movement.

Policeman rescues Torah scrolls from Christchurch rubble

Two Torah scrolls buried under the rubble of the Chabad house in Christchurch, New Zealand, have been saved. Rabbi Shmuel Friedman, who escaped from the Jewish outreach center with an Israeli backpacker when a devastating earthquake struck Feb. 22, was trying to salvage remnants of the building in central Christchurch on Wednesday when he was stopped by a police detective, Chris Bell.

New approach is needed on talks, PLO official says

The PLO representative to Washington called for a new approach to solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying the two sides are far from resolution. “We are not close to ending this conflict,” the representative, Maen Rashid Areikat, said Wednesday at a kosher luncheon organized by New York University’s Taub Center for Israel Studies and the Berman Jewish Policy Archive at NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service.
