“>had sung with those soulful, beautiful, orange-clad young women</a> – all the Jewish songs of pride and unity that I grew up on – to beseech the young IDF soldiers not to destroy these thriving Jewish communities. The pleas fell on psychologically trained ears, and I was forced out, surrounded by a row of Israeli policemen as I shouted: “I'm going back to America.”</p> <p> Indeed, I left a few years later for a five year break from a country that caused me so much pain. You expect enemies to hurt you. You don't expect those who are charged with protecting you to stab you in the heart.</p> <p> My view on Zionism changed forever. My view of the State's relationship with its citizens changed, and I captured all those feelings in a novel I wrote, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Settler-Orit-Arfa-ebook/dp/B00DO9ZTTG <view-source:http://www.amazon.com/The-Settler-Orit-Arfa-ebook/dp/B00DO9ZTTG>“>The Settler</a>, because the revolution that the catastrophe caused within me required more than another op-ed or diary entry. It required the creation of a new world that only fiction could offer.</p> <p> As a journalist, I researched the aftermath of the withdrawal in the years to come: the phenomenon of youth leaving the faith, disappointed in God for turning His face as they were dragged out of their homes; the psychological training inflicted on the soldiers who were forced to go against their nature by uprooting their fellow citizens; and the mistreatment of the evacuees by the Israeli government.</p> <p> Make no mistake about it: the people of Gush Katif were victims, and Ariel Sharon was the aggressor whose plan went unchecked by a biased, merciless media.</p> <p> But now, it is time for us – the community of “settlers” – to do introspection, to understand why this happened to “us” – as I feel a part of them.</p> <p> And this is one of my conclusions: our struggle to hold on to Gush Katif was too mystical. The people relied too much on faith, believing in a miracle – as I did – that it wouldn't happen. May I dare say, the largely religious-Zionist communities were too restricted by Orthodox law to win.</p> <p> The secular Disengagement mechanism didn't pray to remove the Jews. They planned, and secular people can plan with so many more tools at their disposal to shape reality according to their will, for example:</p> <p> <strong>They have more work hours at their disposal.</strong> They are not bound by the restrictions of Shabbat, holidays, and strict times for prayer.</p> <p> <strong>They utilize more human power. </strong>Orthodox law restricts women from working closely with men, from dressing freely, from singing and communicating in front of men. Secular women are less restricted in what they can do and how they can communicate, allowing men and women to work together more creatively and effectively.</p> <p> <strong>The religious-narrative of Gush Katif was not relatable to the masses.</strong> The struggle for Gush Katif was painted as a religious one, even though there were so many rational, secular, human rights based reasons for opposing the withdrawal.</p> <p> <strong>Secular people have more communication power.</strong> They're not limited by rules of modesty, both in speech and in dress, in expressing their thoughts and thus influencing people. They have pop culture at their disposal to reach the masses.</p> <p> Of course, I feel this personally. The novel I wrote will certainly be avoided by some of the people whom I so wanted to protect because it portrays an Orthodox woman leaving her faith, and most of all – it has sex scenes. The song I wrote in homage to Gush Katif – <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLxCwf0S7i8 <view-source:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLxCwf0S7i8>“>an MTV-style pop song</a> – will likely not be distributed among religious-Zionist circles because it pictures a woman proudly singing in a bathing suit.</p> <p> But if the settlement movement does not start to divert control and leadership from the religious-Zionist camp – a leadership that ultimately failed that summer – I fear that we will see more Expulsions from Judea and Samaria, and that the destruction of Gush Katif in the eyes of many will just become a cliché of right-left strife.</p> <p> With <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLxCwf0S7i8 <view-source:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLxCwf0S7i8>“>my song</a>, I hope to introduce a new language for discussing our values – because what happened that summer ten years ago is about so much more than Jews vs. Arabs, left vs. right, land vs. peace, religious vs. secular.
