First, I’d like to assure my readers that both the beans and the menorah are kosher. Perhaps not for Passover, given how corny some of you may find it. O.k., I’ll stop. The truth is, as the “>menorah.
But all of these creations only happened within the past 10 years or so. Back in the day, when Chanukah had just started, the word “crazy” would never have been used to describe a menorah. Rather, menorahs of that time would have been described as “decorative,” “appropriate” and “dignified,” like these:

So what happened? My theory is that people today have a lot more time and money on their hands than they did back then. Plus, with the help of the internet, they now have a potential audience of millions for their shenanigans. To put it another way, 2,000 years ago, when people had to rely on rain and backbreaking work just to live, they may have been just a little bit more mature than we are. Or than I am. Just a little.</p>
