I want to thank and congratulate you for again getting it right (“It’s Warsaw, Jake,” Oct. 18). It’s amazing what happens when power and authority are motivators. Since the Twarda has dealt with only the Orthodox community under Rabbi Michael Schudrich for years, it’s an uphill dynamic to move the pendulum at all or at least incrementally.
As an avid reader of the Journal for the last 15 years, I found the “Tea-hadist” cartoon to be completely in bad taste and shameful for a Jewish publication to print on many levels (Greenberg’s View, Oct. 11). I urge the Journal to issue a sincere apology to its readers and to publish an article on sensitivity in equating political events with tragic episodes and characters of history.
t can be seen by the article “Light-Up Nation” (Oct. 4) that medical marijuana is truly a science and has medical and emotional benefits. My hope is that funds will be allocated in the near future so that more research and clinical trials can be done. Why is it considered OK in the Jewish communities to partake of alcohol and, as the distributor might say, “drink responsibly,” but marijuana is still looked at in a different light? Not everyone who smokes is a “stoner,” in the classical sense of the word.
I find multiple problems with the article “A Union’s Jewish Connection” (Sept. 27). These problems bias the article dramatically against the Bet Tzedek employees and give Jewish Journal readers far less than full information. They include: an unclear news angle clarifying why this story, now; a premise that puts Bet Tzedek employees on the defensive; and an assertion from Bet Tzedek management that Bet Tzedek employees want to sacrifice client services for their own needs.
Many Opinions on One-State Article Only in an echo chamber of anti-Zionists do Ian Lustick’s arguments sound anything but absurd (“One-State Delusion,” Sept. 20).
“Where is Hamas when you need them?” and “Go back home to Germany” were the catcalls we heard at the demonstration on the Sunday before Yom Kippur (“Kaparot Concession Sought,” Sept. 13). Demonstrators led by radical vegan Rabbi Jonathan Klein spewed hatred and accosted Jews who were following Jewish traditions of thousands of years. For religious Jews it was chilling reminder of the disdain and hostility some on the radical fringe of the Jewish community have for their own religion and those who follow its traditions. Sadly it was Jew vs. Jew in the most terrible fashion. Those with an agenda of animal rights demonstrated against kaparot to promote their radical viewpoint.
Rob Eshman brings us the chilling fact that most Pakistanis believe Israel and the United States are behind the 9/11 attacks and the cause for the chaos in Egypt (“Reshaping Hate,” Aug. 30). Once again, this raises the question: “Why do they hate us?” The answers suggested by the Muslim journalists show that after all these years, we’re still guessing.
I have known and been friends with Marty Sklar and his family for about 50 years. I enjoyed the article about Marty’s book and his accomplishments at Disney (“Disney Legend, Mensch,” Aug. 16). However, Marty Sklar is a multidimensional man whose accomplishments beyond Disney were truly exceptional.
Rob Eshman’s praise of Mark Rosenblum’s decades-long battle for a just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian struggle is well deserved (“The Crusader,” Aug. 23). I’ve worked with Mark for years, share his passion, if not his energy in working for the two-state solution and fearing for Israel in the years ahead if the two-state solution fails. Charting current birth rates, Jews could be a minority in an Israel with a Palestinian majority. And then what happens? Following Mark’s vision, we must keep trying because failure leads to a very bleak, troubled tomorrow.
