Buzz-worthy espresso

There is nothing like an espresso in the afternoon: the swirl of caramel-colored coffee foam; the dark, robust burst of flavor; the infusion of energy. The latte and the cappuccino are delicious, too, fortifying in the morning, sweet later in the day. I’ve been ordering these drinks for years, but until I met Moti Menachem at his cool espresso bar in the Westfield Topanga mall, I had no idea why only a few of those cups were ever truly great.

Kosher wine shop a spirited addition to Pico-Robertson

Jewish wine enthusiasts in Pico-Robertson now have a specialty shop of their own where they can taste, talk about and buy kosher wines from all over the world. The Cask, which opened its doors in April, plans to offer more than 500 kosher wines and 125 scotches when fully stocked, in addition to other spirits. Although the store does not carry kosher certification, owner Michael Bernstein said he will not stock anything that is not kosher.

H&H Bagels, the no-frills bagel shop that for decades was a beloved fixture of Manhattan\’s Upper West Side, is reportedly closing its doors.

Manischewitz opens new HQ in N.J.

The Manischewitz Co. celebrated the opening of its new headquarters in Newark, N.J., by making the world\’s longest piece of matzah. The production of the 25-foot-long matzah, equal to 336 regular matzah squares, was overseen Tuesday by Israel\’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, Yona Metzger. Metzger also affixed mezuzahs to the doorways of the company\’s offices.

Israeli dairy cows produce more milk than dairy cows do in other countries. The Israeli dairy cows produced an average of nearly 2,642 gallons of milk a year in 2009, according to data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics on Monday. Some 344, 480 gallons of milk was produced by Israeli cows in 2010.

Nevada prisoner sues for access to kosher food

A Jewish prisoner has taken legal action to prevent the shut-down of the kosher food programs in Nevada state prisons. Attorneys for Howard Ackerman say he’s an Orthodox Jew concerned by reports that the Department of Corrections in Nevada plans to discontinue kosher food service in state prisons within the week.

With increasingly particular eaters, Shabbat meals get tough

There’s a scene in the 1991 film “L.A. Story” where a waiter in a trendy eatery takes increasingly complex coffee orders from a table of Hollywood types, ending with the sublimely ridiculous “half double decaffeinated half-caf, with a twist of lemon.” What caused a guffaw back then might hardly merit a chuckle in today’s world of low-carb, no-sugar, gluten-free and locally sourced food preferences.
