A Place Where We All Feel at Home

This past summer, while leading a Jewish Heritage tour through Central and Eastern Europe, we spent Shabbat in the beautiful city of Prague.

Doing the Dirty Work

Rabbi Safra roasted the meat. Raba salted the fish.
According to the Talmud, this is what these two great sages did every Friday afternoon, in preparation for Shabbat. The Talmud regards this information as noteworthy because, although both sages certainly had others in their households who could have done this work, they insisted on doing it themselves. \”It is greater to do the mitzvah with one\’s own hands than to delegate it to others\” was the motto by which Rabbi Safra and Raba lived. And they apparently applied this motto without discrimination. It pertained to messy or smelly mitzvot just as it did to mitzvot that did not get one\’s hands and clothing dirty. A mitzvah is a mitzvah.

Notes From Friday Night

Friday Night Live is a relatively new Shabbat service designed to attract 25- to 40-year-old Jewish singles. The Westwood service has become increasingly popular since its inception in June, now attracting standing-room-only crowds of up to 800.

A Helping Hand

\”Where\’s the jelly? I need five jellies.\”
\”Hand me 18 fruit rolls, will you?\”

\”I love your skirt, where did you get it?\”

The scene: A typical Thursday evening at Tomchei Shabbos\’ warehouse, at 353 1/2 N. La Brea Ave., where a team of fast-working, quick-talking volunteers gathers to pack overflowing food boxes for needy families in Los Angeles.

A Room of Their Own

Started in June as a once-a-month event, \”Friday Night Live\” has become a happening, of sorts. The most recent service easily drew 800 people.

Shabbat Across Los Angeles

It\’s finally happened. Marketing gurus have gottentheir hands on Shabbat, taking it off dining-room tables and throwingit up onto billboards across the nation — in the hopes of bringingit back down to more tables.

A Belated Wedding Present

The ad caught our eye: an all-expense paid Shabbat weekend at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute for couples married withinthe past 18 months. I had been to Brandeis before, so I knew that, if nothing else, my husband, Neal, and I would experience a tranquil Shabbat in a beautiful setting.

Makor

When Rabbi Gordon Bernat-Kunin founded an informal group dedicated to bringing together young Jewish adults to celebrate Shabbat, he named it Makor, meaning \”source.\” Makor, which meets one Friday night a month in a participant\’s homes, is described by Bernat-Kunin as a \”pluralistic grass-roots participatory community,\” whose goal is \”to translate the spirit of Brandeis Collegiate Institute, Ramah, and summer camp into the city.\”

Torah Portion

Deeply ingrained ideas die hard. This week\’s parasha, however, helps to ring the death knell for one such idea. Many of us have been trained to believe that the Torah\’s commandments can be broken down into two basic categories.

Synagogues, Temples and Shuls

As Shabbat ebbs next week, try Young Israel ofCentury City for something a little sexy — namely, a lecture on \”TheFacts of Life: How to Teach Yeshiva Students,\” led by Rabbi Baruchand Michal Finkelstein.
