Where the Action Is

These are three experiences that have made me most hate being Jewish:

Etz Jacob: The Shul that Could

Attention, anyone who was ever married or bar mitzvahed at Etz Jacob Congregation at 7659 Beverly Blvd.: The shul wants testimonials, photographs and memorabilia for an exhibit honoring its 80thanniversary. The temple is the oldest in Beverly-Fairfax, and, according to Rabbi Rubin Huttler, it\’s in large part responsible for creating the Jewish enclave around Fairfax Avenue.

Spectator

The 14th annual Israel Film Festival formally raised the curtain last week on its two-week program of 50 feature movies, documentaries, TV films and golden oldies with an opening-night gala at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

One People: Religious Christians and Jews?

Most of the mainstream secular Jewish organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Congress would like us to think so. But a recent gathering in Washington proved that a grass-roots movement is taking hold among Jews — not only the Orthodox — whose views are economically, politically and socially more in line with members of the Christian Coalition than with either the ADL or the AJC.

Holidays

A Time for Unity, a Time for Leadership

We are rapidly approaching a momentous occasion — the 50th anniversary of Israel. It should be a time for unquestioned Jewish pride and Jewish unity. Yet this may not be the case.

Yom Ha Shoah

In truth, though, many other Orthodox Jews — including most of Agudath Israel\’s constituency — do not consider Yom Ha Shoah to be the appropriate time for focusing on the destruction of Jewish Europe.
