In Search of Love

Just as I can honestly say that I don\’t think I\’m mother material, Lisa Cohen of Costa Mesa sure is.

Cohen, 40, a single mom and a busy drama teacher, is recently divorced, but actively looking for that special someone. Like many young Jewish singles in Orange County, Cohen has found that trying to meet her counterpart is a lot like looking for a needle in a haystack. Perhaps that\’s why she immerses herself in her work.

O.C. Olim

David and Lori Melman, former Santa Ana residents, look out their window to see a mountaintop covered with scrub oak and bay leaves that could be mistaken for coastal California foothills. The idyllic country lifestyle and its neighborhood feeling is what lured them to Har Halutz, a Galilee community established by the Reform movement, in 1985. \”When I compare life in the U.S. to life in Israel, Israel always wins,\” Lori says.

Relevant on the Roof

The famous musical, \”Fiddler on the Roof,\” which celebrates life and Jewish family tradition during turbulent times, is coming to town, and what better time than now?

Around the Block

This fall, the Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach is recognizing the needs of seventh- and eighth-graders by creating a new middle school program, which will include a new teaching methodology.

New Beginnings

Our mission is to provide the entire O.C. Jewish community with fresh and vital information that will enable members to participate fully in Jewish communal life.

Jewish Girls Rule

It never occurred to me that there was some kind of tacit competition going on, pitting the home Jewesses against the visiting teams from the other major religions.

Israelis in Orange County

Violence in Israel, instead of creating community among the area\’s fragmented expatriates, generates emotional shockwaves that turn them into news junkies.

Grass-Roots Support

The rally demonstrated the county\’s growing Jewish vocal involvement on Israeli matters, and heightened the Israeli community\’s plight so far from home.

Muslim Messages

Amid the profusion of billboards along Southern California freeways, motorists are being startled by a new one. It features seven smiling faces of various ethnicities, with one, a woman wearing a black headscarf, holding a small American flag.\n\n

Community Scholar

Driven by a personal desire for intellectual growth, Arie Katz set out last year to attract to Orange County the sort of eminent Jewish scholars that few synagogues can afford to woo on their own. With little more than his own chutzpah and considerable networking skills, the Newport Beach attorney won support and financial backing from the area\’s most influential Jewish agencies to establish a community scholar-in-residence program. Its first event, at 7 p.m. Jan. 28, will kick off at the Jewish Federation Campus in Costa Mesa with the arrival of Avigdor Shinan, an Israeli professor and author.
