A Cinematic Look at Israel

The Israeli Film Festival, now in it\’s 15th year, has, in many ways, come of age — in subject matter, directorial style and sensibility.

Bibi’s Betrayal

\”Binyamin Netanyahu is no longer the leader of the national camp,\” Aharon Domb, general secretary of the West Bank and Gaza Jewish settlers\’ council, said this week, with all the finality of a judge pronouncing sentence.

Mideast

A couple of months ago, Dov Dribben, age 28, was clubbed and shot to death by Palestinian Arabs on a tract of Israeli \”government land\” attached to the West Bank settlement of Maon, about 40 miles south of Jerusalem.

Torah Portion

People often complain that if we only had leaders like those in past generations, we would not have the problems we face today. It seems to be a chronic malady that we never are satisfied with the leaders of our own time. Yet, an old Jewish adage states, \”each generation receives the leader it deserves.\” In truth, nowhere is this fact so apparent as in this week\’s Torah reading.

Opinion

The sight of Israeli Minister of Tourism Moshe Katzav being kissed by Israeli singer and Eurovision song contest winner Dana International must have made someone, somewhere blush. But you wouldn\’t have known it by reading any of the Israeli papers last week. With the kind of glee that is only reserved in the Holy Land for the smashing of idols, Israeli editorialists pounced on Dana\’s victory as further proof that Israel, having produced not just a Eurovision contest winner, but a transsexual one, has finally arrived as a nation among nations. So finally, we have the good word from Israel: Androgyny is in. Ethnocentricism (read Judaism with its intolerance for diversity and priggish emphasis on sexual purity), is most definitely out.

Mideast

The government is now trying to pass an updated version of the conversion law, which, it claims, gives consideration to Conservative and Reform Jewry

Revisionist TV

After 50 years of evasion, soft sell andhalf-truths, Israelis are coming to terms with the darker side oftheir own history.

Spectator

The 14th annual Israel Film Festival formally raised the curtain last week on its two-week program of 50 feature movies, documentaries, TV films and golden oldies with an opening-night gala at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Family Business

Back in the heyday of the self-made Jewish movie moguls, the studios were, to a certain degree, family businesses.
