Emanuel sworn in to lead Chicago

Rahm Emanuel was sworn in as the first Jewish mayor of Chicago. Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff, took the oath of office on Monday. He was elected mayor of the country\’s third-largest city in February after sitting mayor Richard Daley declined to seek a seventh term in office.

Jewish activist Judy Gaynor named to scholars commission

Judy Gaynor, a Chicago-area human rights and Jewish activist, was named to the federal body that recognizes outstanding high school scholars. President tapped Gaynor on April 27 as one of two new members of the Commission on Presidential Scholars.

Farrakhan spews anti-Jewish rhetoric at meeting

Minister Louis Farrakhan at the Nation of Islam\’s annual meeting accused the Jewish community of pushing the United States into war with Libya and Iran. “President Obama, if you allow the Zionists to push you, to mount a military offensive against Gadhafi, and you go in and kill him and his sons as you did with Saddam Hussein and his sons, I’m warning you this is a Libyan problem, let the Libyans solve their problem among themselves,” Farrakhan said Feb. 27 during an address to the Nation of Islam’s 2011 Saviours’ Day convention in Rosemont, Ill., near Chicago.
