A Fresh Crop

A delicious breeze wafted through the white tent erected on the brand-new, football field-sized parking lot of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) on May 14, cooling gowned graduates, faculty, and alumni — plus a bevy of proud relatives and friends — as the school awarded degrees to a group of freshly minted Jewish educators and communal service professionals and a clutch of rabbis-to-be.

Celebrating the Rebirth of ‘L.A.’s Jewish Headquarters’

The Jewish Federation Goldsmith Center — reborn state-of-the-art headquarters of The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles — enjoyed a splashy grand-opening celebration on Dec. 10. Originally slated as a community-wide event, the Donor Recognition Ceremony served as a formal thank-you to lead contributors, such as Elaine and Bram Goldsmith, the building\’s namesakes. With an original $5-million matching gift, the Goldsmith family launched the capital campaign for the 12-story building\’s two-year refurbishing process, which corrected damage incurred from the Northridge quake.

Honoring the Righteous

When the atrocities of the Holocaust came to public light, many unsung heroes remained in the shadows.
In a ceremony at the United Nations on Monday, some rescued Holocaust survivors met their unknown heroes, or those heroes\’ family members, for the first time since the war.

The international community honored government diplomats who risked their careers and lives to save thousands of Jews fleeing Nazi terror.
