L.A. ADL Talks of Split

Following the recent dismissal of Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Regional Director David Lehrer, Los Angeles members continued to discuss the prospect of splitting off from the New York organization. Close to 100 people attended the meeting of the executive board of the Pacific Southwest Region of the ADL on Wednesday, Jan. 9, to discuss Lehrer\’s dismissal.

The L.A. Image

The best thing about David Lehrer\’s firing as head of the local Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has been the local reaction, which has done more to awaken Los Angeles\’ Jewish leadership than anything in recent memory. The worst thing about Lehrer\’s firing: That the ADL\’s New York leadership thought it could get away with it, and, sadly, it probably will.

Hate Rock

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued a list of bands that promote racist, bigoted or hateful ideas. The list Bigots Who Rock: An ADL List of Hate Music Groups identifies 541 bands, primarily based in the United States and Europe, that use hate-filled lyrics or have active links to organized hate groups.

Encouraging Tzedakah

Leona Goldring is 93. She not only attends monthly Anti-Defamation League (ADL) meetings, as well as planning sessions for their fundraising events, but she also is still active in the Women\’s Fundraising Division of United Jewish Fund (UJF). She was its chairperson about 40 years ago, and she still attends regular strategy meetings for former chairs.

Downward Trend

\”While the drop in number of anti-Semitic acts over the last five years is in one sense very encouraging; unfortunately, the horrific acts of violence and intimidation we have witnessed in the last year overwhelm the statistics,\” said Abraham Foxman, the ADL\’s national director.

The ADL Is Not Amused

The Anti-Defamation League is not amused by a \”Saturday Night Live\” satire in which cast members, posing as pop stars, said that Jews own all the banks and that Christians have forgiven them for \”killing our Lord.\”

ADL Passover seder for the schools in Los Angeles Unified School District

All evening Taumisha Freeman sat dutifully, listening to the story of the Exodus out of Egypt, tasting matzah (\”It needs salt\”), reciting the plagues, without any expression. It was hard to know if she was bored or if, given the fact that she had never been around anything Jewish before, it was just too strange to be here at this intergroup Passover, sponsored by the Pacific Southwest regional office of the Anti-Defamation League.
