The Canadian Parliament’s sergeant-at-arms, who shot a gunman inside the Parliament building last month, was to be honored by Israel’s Knesset.

Kevin Vickers, who is in Israel for a security conference, was to be recognized on Nov. 12 by the Knesset speaker, Yuli Edelstein, and was scheduled to meet with Edelstein in his chambers.

Vickers, 58, a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, shot and killed Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who was firing his weapon in the Hall of Honor of Parliament in Ottawa on the morning of Oct. 22. Zehaf-Bibeau had shot and killed a soldier guarding the National War Memorial.

Hailed as a hero, Vickers received a standing ovation from Canadian lawmakers the following day.

He and other Canadian security and police officials are in Israel for the third international homeland security conference to examine intelligence, counterterrorism and law enforcement.

Vickers is scheduled to be in the Knesset’s audience gallery when he receives his recognition.
