Rocket Fire Continues After Hamas Says Ceasefire in Place

Rockets continue to be launched from the Gaza Strip and into the Eshkol and Shaar Hanegev regions of Israel on March 25 after Hamas claims that a ceasefire agreement had been forged.

The Times of Israel reports that Hamas made that announcement at 10 p.m. Israeli time; however, rocket fire from Gaza continued after that time. A total of 30 rockets had been fired from Gaza into Israel before Hamas’ declaration; it has not yet been specified how many rockets have been fired since then.

There have been reports that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have launched another round of retaliatory strikes, which the IDF has not yet confirmed.

The latest batch of rocket-fire exchange between Israel and Hamas started at 5:20 a.m. on March 25, when two rockets fired from Gaza struck Tel Aviv, resulting in the destruction of a home in Mishmeret and injuring seven people. Israel retaliated by striking several Hamas targets in Gaza, prompting further rocket fire from Gaza. No Israelis have been reported injured from the latest round of Gaza rockets.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to be back in Israel on March 26 after cutting his trip to the AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) Policy Conference short as a result of the rocket fire.

“We gave a very strong, very powerful response,” Netanyahu said. “Hamas needs to know that we will not hesitate to enter and take the necessary steps.”

What AIPAC Adds to the Israel Conversation

After three days of bumping into hundreds of Israel supporters at the annual AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, D.C.; attending sessions on the cultural and scientific achievements that come out of the Jewish state; on the philosophical, political and security dilemmas that confront Israel; on the rise of anti-Semitism and the BDS movement; and on the complicated and evolving relationship between Israel and the American Jewish community– including the vexing challenge of maintaining bipartisan political support for the Jewish state– I think I’ve figured out the key value of this 18,000-people schmoozefest, besides the obvious benefit of going home with hundreds of business cards.

It is this: The Israel conversation in America needs this conference.

Over the past decade or so, much of the Jewish conversation on Israel has been hyper-polarized and emotional. Criticism of the right-wing policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has often descended into bitterness and contempt. From their end, Bibi supporters, who are usually also President Trump supporters, have shown how they can be equally bitter and contemptuous. It’s a dynamic of mutual animosity and isolation.

Into this highly charged and unproductive atmosphere comes the AIPAC conference, as a way, perhaps, of calling an annual time-out for reflection on both the value and complexity of Israel.

While you’ll hear criticism of Israeli policies from individual panelists at some of the many breakout sessions, that’s not the main purpose of the conference. The overriding purpose, as I see it, is to encourage supporters of Israel to stay engaged, and to find their own way of staying engaged, for the simple reason that it’s good for Israel and it’s good for America.

There’s so much going on at the conference that one can easily punch holes here and there, especially if the sessions you pick are not to your liking. But maybe I got lucky, because I attended a session on Shabbat that moved me enough that I felt that session alone was worth the whole trip.

“Compromise doesn’t mean a betrayal of your truth,” was the line that stuck with me. Tal Becker, a scholar and Senior Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, was speaking about how human beings are wired to be tribal. To elevate from a tribal morality to a meta morality, he said, takes work. It takes “thinking slow.” But when you get there, he assured us, compromise becomes an opportunity to access a “higher truth” that is difficult to see when we think fast and tribal. Becker was making a compelling moral case for something that has gone horribly out of fashion these days– listening and honoring the other side.

I felt a sense of liberation coming out of his session. The complexity didn’t phase me; it stayed with me. It freed me to think further.

Not everyone will draw the same conclusions from their experience at AIPAC, but this was mine: The conference offers a kaleidoscope of stories and issues and discussions about Israel and the Israel-American relationship that remind us why it all matters and why we should care.

And of course, there are those stacks of business cards we bring home with us, which no doubt will add complexity to our lives.

Exclusive: Joe Stone Tells the Story of the 2 Live Jews, the Evolution of Miami Hip-Hop

Henry Stone was a music industry legend who set up more than 100 record labels. He was instrumental in the careers of James Brown and KC & The Sunshine Band – to name a few legends – and altogether instrumental in the mainstream expansion of the R&B, disco and hip-hop genres.

His namesake company, Henry Stone Music, lives on through his son Joe, while Stone’s legacy itself lives on through the award-winning documentary film “The Record Man.”

But Joe Stone is no music business slouch himself. L’Trimm, Gucci Crew II and 2 Unlimited are among the artists who Joe Stone helped build careers for. However, my favorite project which Joe Stone has been part of was easily the 2 Live Jews. At quick glance, the 2 Live Jews – as co-founded with Eric Lambert – was a Judaism-centric, novelty-oriented, humorous take on the 2 Live Crew. Beyond the similar artist names, the 2 Live Jews had a 1990 album called “As Kosher As They Wanna Be” (2 Live Crew had “As Nasty As They Wanna Be”) and a video for “Oy So Humid” (2 Live Crew, of course, had a hit with “Me So Horny”). Yet 2 Live Jews would release another four studio albums – in addition to a one-off single in 2010 called “What’s With The Pants” – and the group continues to live on infamy.

I was able to track down Joe Stone and schedule an in-depth phone interview with him about the past, present and future of the 2 Live Jews. Within our chat, he also touched upon working with his father Henry, his legit hip-hop roots, what 2 Live Crew thought of the 2 Live Jews, what he is working on these days, and whether 2 Live Jews may record again in the future. Highlights – featuring minimal interruptions from yours truly – are below.

IDF Strikes Hamas Targets in Retaliation for Rockets Hitting Tel Aviv

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck several Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip after two rockets from Gaza struck Tel Aviv on the morning of March 25 Israeli time.

The Times of Israel reports that the IDF announced its actions in the early evening on March 25; their targets included the “secret headquarters of the Hamas terror group, which is used by the internal security, central intelligence and military intelligence branches of the group.”

“This is a central asset of the Hamas terror group,” the IDF said in a statement.

Other areas the IDF targeted in Gaza included Deir el-Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah, per the Times of Israel.

Twelve rockets have since been launched from Gaza toward southern Israel communities.

One of the Gaza rockets that hit Tel Aviv struck a home in Mishmeret and injured seven people, including an 18-month-old baby and a 3-year-old. The home belonged to Robert and Susan Wolf, who are originally from London.

“If we hadn’t got to the bomb shelter in time I would be burying all my family,” Robert Wolf told the UK Telegraph.

Trump Signs Proclamation Recognizing Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Monday, March 25, officially recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights in Syria.

The proclamation states, “Any possible future peace agreement in the region must account for Israel’s need to protect itself from Syria and other regional threats. Based on these unique circumstances, it is therefore appropriate to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.”

Trump said at the White House, after meeting with with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “This was a long time in the making and it should have taken place many years ago.”

Netanyahu praised and thanked Trump, telling him, “Israel has never had a better friend than you.”

“Your decision to recognize sovereignty is a two-fold act of historic justice: Israel won the Golan Heights in a just war of self-defense, and the Jewish people’s connection to that land goes back generations,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu was in Washington, D.C., to address the AIPAC conference, but cut short his trip to return to Israel Monday after a terrorist missile hit a home in central Israel Sunday evening.

Sandra Parker, chairwoman of the Christians United for Israel Action Fund, said in a statement, “As a direct result of Syria’s ruthlessness and Iran’s increasing presence in the Arab Republic it has been clear for years that Israel could never relinquish control of the Golan Heights. President Trump recognized this reality and acted on it. This policy has enjoyed bipartisan support and we are especially grateful to the President as well as those Members of Congress, including Senators Ted Cruz, Kevin Cramer, Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham and Representative Mike Gallagher, for leading on this issue.”

However, the United Nations will not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

The UN’s policy on Golan is reflected in the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and that policy has not changed,” U.N. spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said, referencing resolutions that have referred to the Golan as being “occupied” by Israel.

Syria’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Trump’s move “makes the United States the main enemy of the Arabs.”
