White House presses Congress not to intensify sanctions

The Obama administration reportedly is asking Congress to delay passing new Iran sanctions. The National Security Council on Thursday hosted top staffers from congressional committees dealing with Iran sanctions at a White House briefing.

The international sportswriters’ association, which goes by the acronym AIPS, held its two-day executive committee meeting this week in Doha, Qatar. The meeting’s guest of honor was Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee, who is keenly sophisticated and moves fluidly between Arab and western cultures.

Israel says it will announce more settlement building

Israel said on Thursday it would press ahead with plans to build in existing Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, in an apparent bid to appease hardliners opposed to peace talks with the Palestinians.
