Bacteria, mold found in jet fuel

An Israel Airports Authority investigation has found bacteria and mold in contaminated jet fuel, which had grounded dozens of planes in Israel. The Airport Authority checked the fuel in an outside lab. It called on the Paz Oil Company on Monday to explain why its fuel was documented as fine when it actually was contaminated, Haaretz reported. A U.S. Air Force laboratory in Germany refused to test the fuel, saying it did not take on private jobs.

Clinton sends Israel Independence Day greetings

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sent best wishes to Israel for its Independence Day on behalf of President Obama and the U.S. people. In the statement issued Sunday, Clinton called Israel, on its 63rd birthday, \”a young nation, but a rich history that holds deep meaning for so many.\”

Ottowa municipal building named for mayor called anti-Semitic

Despite opposition from Jewish groups, a municipal committee in Ottawa voted to name a new building after a former mayor described as an unrepentant anti-Semite. In a controversial vote May 3, a city of Ottawa subcommittee voted to rename a new archives and library building after Charlotte Whitton, the Canadian capital\’s first female mayor. Whitton was first elected in 1951 but historians and some Jewish leaders have pointed out that, during World War II, she actively lobbied against admitting Jewish orphans to Canada.

Israel to promote Dead Sea’s New 7 Wonders candidacy

Israel\’s Cabinet has allocated more than $2.5 million to promote the candidacy of the Dead Sea as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The Dead Sea is one of 28 sites to have reached the finals of the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition. Other candidates include the Grand Canyon, the Amazon rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. It is a joint Israel-Jordan-Palestinian Authority candidate, and was chosen by internet voting for the finals from an initial pool of 420 sites.
