Dozens of young Jewish settlers attempted to make an unauthorized visit to Joseph’s Tomb, leading to the arrest of 13.
The infiltrators, who made their way to the tomb via the Balata refugee camp in Nablus and Palestinian farmlands on Wednesday night, were accompanied by right-wing activist Baruch Marzel and Israeli lawmaker Michael Ben-Ari of the National Union Party, Ynet reported.
The infiltration attempt comes days after Ben-Joseph Livnat, 25, a father of four from Jerusalem, was killed when a group of 15 Breslov Hasidim made an unauthorized visit to worship at the site, which is holy to Jews and is located in West Bank territory under full Palestinian control. Livnat is also the nephew of Israeli Science and Culture Minister Limor Livnat of the ruling Likud Party.
The Israel Defense Forces tracked the infiltrators using illumination flares, joining a joint search with the Israel police.
Limor Livnat on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to find a way to enable more Jews to pray at the site on a regular basis.
A second woman will be ordained under the title rabba.
The Academy of Jewish Religion in Riverdale is set to ordain Kaya Stern-Kaufman, 47, of Great Barrington, Mass., at a ceremony on May 12, the New York Jewish Week reported Wednesday.
Her ordination comes a year after Rabbi Avi Weiss, who heads the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, a modern Orthodox synagogue in the Bronx, conferred the title rabba on Sara Hurwitz, who serves the congregation, causing controversy throughout the Orthodox world.
A month after ordaining Hurwitz, Weiss said that he would no longer ordain women with the title rabba. Weiss is not affiliated with the Academy of Jewish Religion.
Stern-Kaufman, who previously worked as a clinical social worker and as a Feng Shui consultant in architecture, and as a part-time Jewish educator, is following seven generations of Orthodox rabbis in her family, the Jewish Week reports.
The Academy of the Hebrew Language in Israel officially entered the word “rabba” into the Hebrew language last year, according to the newspaper.
Some of the previous year’s female graduates had asked to graduate with the title rabba, but “we needed time to study it and consider the ramifications,” Ora Horn Prouser, executive vice president and dean of the academy, told the Jewish Week.
Stern-Kaufman is one of seven females to be graduating from the academy this year, and the only one who will be receiving the title rabba.
The academy was founded in 1956 as a pluralistic rabbinical school. Graduating rabbinical and cantorial students receive a Masters degree from Gratz College, a general college of Jewish studies, in Philadelphia.

The Palestinians will continue to negotiate peace with Israel despite a unity agreement with the terrorist Hamas organization, Mahmoud Abbas said.
Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, told reporters Thursday that the Palestine Liberation Organization that he heads will continue to be responsible for handling negotiations, Haaretz reported. Hamas is not a member of the PLO.
Abbas’ comments came a day after his Fatah movement and Hamas, which controls Gaza, announced that they had reconciled, following a meeting in Cairo.
Abbas has not yet announced the composition of his “unity cabinet.” An official unity agreement ceremony is scheduled to be held in Cairo next week.
The new unity government “Has nothing to do with politics,” Abbas said.
Israel has said that it will not negotiate with Hamas.
Top Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said Thursday that his organization will not participate in peace talks with Israel, Ynet reported.
Al-Zahar said it will not stop its partners from talking to Israel, saying “if Fatah wants to negotiate with Israel over trivialities, they can.”
In a statement issued after the announcement Wednesday of the unity agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the reconciliation “shows the weakness of the Palestinian Authority and causes one to wonder if Hamas will seize control of Judea and Samaria like it seized control of the Gaza Strip.”
“The Palestinian Authority needs to choose between peace with Israel and peace with Hamas,” Netanyahu said.
