Co-author of Palestinian statehood plan set to take key role on Middle East

The White House reportedly is set to name Steve Simon, the co-author of a comprehensive outline for a Palestinian state, as a top Middle East official. The Obama administration will tap Simon, a former top National Security Council official in the Clinton administration, to head the NSC\’s Middle East desk, according to Laura Rozen of The Envoy foreign policy blog on Yahoo.com. Simon would succeed Daniel Shapiro, who by default has become the top administration point man for pro-Israel groups and Israeli officials.

Israel taking matters into its own hands on Holocaust restitution

The Israeli government is firing a new salvo in the turf war over Holocaust restitution. Following years of complaints by survivors about opacity and unjust allocation decisions by the Claims Conference, and after two decades of what critics deride as scant tangible successes by the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO), a new Israeli restitution organization is amassing hundreds of thousands of new claims for survivors and their heirs.

Apparent arson destroys N.Y. kosher market set to reopen

An apparent arson attack destroyed a renovated kosher supermarket in New York City that was set to reopen. The Seasons market in the Kew Gardens Hills neighborhood of Queens reportedly was set alight early Monday morning, during the Passover holiday. The attack ruined the inventory and destroyed most of the building, according to the New York Post. The New York Police Department is investigating the incident.

Non-Jewish man returns chametz

A non-Jewish man who took possession of the chametz given to him by a haredi Orthodox community just before the start of Passover returned the goods shortly after the end of the holiday.
