After bombshell Op-Ed, questions for Richard Goldstone and Israel

Richard Goldstone’s original U.N. report on the Gaza war of 2008-09 landed like a bombshell in the PR war over Israel, damaging Israel’s reputation around the world with its finding that Israel potentially committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during its three-week war against Hamas.

Israeli lawmaker Dichter heckled at Brandeis

Israeli lawmaker Avi Dichter was heckled by protesters during a speech at Brandeis University. Students from the group Brandeis Students for Justice in Palestine stood up as Dichter began speaking Tuesday during a panel discussion before an audience of several hundred students and called him a war criminal in English and Hebrew, Haaretz reported. The incident can be viewed on YouTube.

Prominent Israelis to unveil peace initiative

A group of leading Israelis, including former heads of the country\’s secret services and the military, will put forth a peace initiative, The New York Times reported. The authors of the two-page Israeli Peace Initiative hope the document, which they are calling a direct response to the Arab Peace Initiative offered by the Arab League in 2002 and revived in 2007, will generate popular support in Israel and influence the Israeli government, according to the Times.

Shut down Iranian bank, Germany’s leaders say

A call by Germany\’s top Jewish leader for the European Iranian Bank of Commerce in Hamburg to be shut down was echoed by the German government. Shortly after Dieter Graumann, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, made his statement to the Handelsblatt online newspaper, the government of Angela Merkel announced that no further payments from India for Iranian crude oil may go through the German banking system.

More haredi children in Britain are living in poverty

A new report warns of a sharp rise in child poverty in Britain\’s haredi Orthodox Jewish community. The report says the rise in child poverty is due to the haredi community\’s large families, lack of secular education and work skills, and cuts in both charitable giving and state social benefits.

Peres to Clinton: Israel is ready to assist in Mideast transition

Shimon Peres told Hillary Rodham Clinton that Israel was ready to do what it could to facilitate transition among its neighbors to democracy. \”We see this occasion as an occasion for better and for good will to cooperate in every possible way to enable this change to take the course into the 21st century for all the Middle East people and escape their poverty and problems and wants,\” the Israeli president told the U.S. secretary of state before their meeting Monday afternoon.

Bloody pig’s foot, anti-Semitic note mailed to Rep. Peter King

A bloody pig\’s foot and an anti-Semitic note were sent to U.S. Rep. Peter King, the chairman of the House of Representatives\’ Homeland Security Committee. Capitol Hill police have opened an investigation into the package to King (R-N.Y.), Politico reported.
