British Jewish lawmaker apologizes for ‘Jews again’ remark

A British lawmaker has apologized for insulting a fellow Jewish lawmaker and Labor Party member during a debate in the House of Commons. During a debate Wednesday on plans to change the law of universal jurisdiction, Gerald Kaufman turned to a lawmaker sitting next to him and said, \”Here we are, the Jews again,\” as pro-Israel lawmaker Louise Ellman rose to refute a claim by the Labor Party\’s Ann Clwyd that the lawmakers were trying to change the law — making it more difficult to issue an arrest warrant against a suspected international war criminal — to appease the Israeli government.

N.Y. budget includes tuition grants for rabbinic students

New York\’s state budget includes tuition grants for college students attending some private religious institutions, including Orthodox rabbinical schools. The money is available as part of the state\’s Tuition Assistance Program, under which any theological student who meets certain criteria, including attending a three-year program at a tax-exempt institution based in New York, can be eligible for the grants.

Carter says he met Gross, pressed for his release

Former President Jimmy Carter met with jailed American contractor Alan Gross and said he believes Gross is “innocent of any serious crime.” Carter met with Gross on Wednesday at an undisclosed location, according to reports. Carter said Tuesday that he would discuss Gross\’ case with Cuban officials, but said that was not the reason for his visit.

Jailed Palestinian engineer denies knowledge of Shalit

A Palestinian engineer secretly captured in Ukraine and jailed in Israel denies having any knowledge of captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Didar Abu Sisi, a Gaza electric power plant engineer, has been held in an Israeli prison for more than a month after being arrested in Ukraine by Israeli agents. Sisi, 42, reportedly was visiting Ukraine with his Ukraine-born wife and their six children in order to apply for Ukrainian citizenship.

Jewish education event in Paris is overbooked

Some 6,000 young Jewish leaders applied for slightly more than 1,000 spots at a European education and youth assembly to be held in Paris. Those who lost reserved spots at next week\’s conference will be the first invited to the next event of the European Council of Jewish Communities, according to a statement by the organization. The participants from across Europe will converge on Disneyland Paris April 3-4 for the ECJC\’s inaugural Jewish Education and Youth General Assembly.
