A Jewish community president who can’t be called to the Torah? Meet Bulgaria’s Alex Oscar
Under a cloudless blue sky, in a square wedged between the National Assembly and the Rectorate of the University of Sofia, Alexander Oscar, the young president of Sofia’s Jewish community, issued a blunt message to his countrymen. The occasion was Bulgaria\’s Holocaust remembrance ceremony on March 10, a day meant to celebrate the country\’s heroic rescue of its 50,000 Jews during World War II, a feat unequalled in any Nazi-allied country and a rightful mark of pride here.
Gingrich: U.S. run by “anti-Jewish” elite
The United States under President Obama is \”dominated by a secular, anti-Christian and anti-Jewish elite,\” Newt Gingrich said. Gingrich, the onetime speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and a likely presidential candidate for 2012, spoke on March 25 at a meeting in Iowa of the American Family Association, Politico reported.
Gandhi loved Jewish architect, biography says
Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi left his wife for a German-Jewish architect and weight lifter, a new biography says. The new book, \”Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India,\” by former New York Times executive editor Joseph Lelyveld, reports that Gandhi was in love with Hermann Kallenbach, for whom he left his wife in 1908.
Jewish leaders fast against budget cuts
Leaders of two Jewish groups are joining an organized fast to protest proposed congressional budget cuts to poverty programs in the United States and abroad. The fast, initiated by HungerFast, a group led by anti-hunger activist Tony Hall, takes aim at proposed substantive cuts now under consideration in Congress that would target overseas food aid and domestic programs that provide food stamps, subsidized meals for preschoolers and their mothers, and subsidized heating for the poor.
Netanyahu to Abbas: You can’t have peace with both Israel and Hamas
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Monday that reconciliation between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas could spell the end of the peace process, after an aide to Mahmoud Abbas said that the Palestinian president was would be willing to give up U.S. aid if needed to secure unity with the rival faction.

Ex-VP hopeful Geraldine Ferraro remembered as friend of Israel
Geraldine Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate in U.S. history, was remembered as a defender of human rights and a friend of Israel. Ferraro died Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital of complications from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. She was 75.
