Sephardic Temple Young Leadership, Sephardic Educational Center and JCafeLA are hosting “Club Mediterranean: A Shabbat Nachamu Celebration,” a night of nonstop entertainment. There will be DJs playing Israeli, Persian and Latin dance music, a performance by a flamenco dance troupe and guitarist, a musical tribute to Israel by Ilana Bostwick, champagne, hors d’oeuvres and dessert in the gardens (dietary laws observed). Karen Hartman’s “Goliath,” set in the Gaza Strip during Israel’s tense 2005 pullout, is part of the two-month First Look Festival of Plays presented by the Open Fist Theatre Company. In “Goliath,” Hartman poses the question of who is David and who is Goliath in the battle over ideals between an American settler, a Palestinian worker, an Ethiopian soldier and an Israeli army commander. The 2009 Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival may have ended in April, but its programming continues with a special screening of “The Wedding Song” (“Le Chant des Mariees”), a film by French-Tunisian filmmaker Karin Albou, who won the Cannes Critics’ Week Best Screenplay for “La Petite Jerusalem.” The film tells the tale of two teenage girls, one Muslim, the other Jewish, whose lifelong friendship is tested by the political turmoil of 1942 Tunis and their own impending weddings. The Feel Good Film Festival features 60 films, shorts and Webisodes for adults and children that have positive themes, happy endings, are funny, light-hearted and capture the good in our world. The opening night gala will include a screening of “Rock Slyde” and the closing night ceremony will pay tribute to film and television legend Ed Asner. Other festival happenings include an original song competition, a panel discussion, live musical performances and a yellow carpet entrance — in honor of the Feel Good sunflower logo.
