Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) has begun circulating an Article of Impeachment to his fellow House members calling for the removal of President Donald Trump from office for his “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Dated June 12, the Article of Impeachment says Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey was an attempt to terminate the investigations into Former National Security Advisor General Michael Flynn and of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“Donald John Trump sought to use his authority to hinder and cause the termination of such investigation (s) including through threatening, and then terminating, James Comey,” the Article says.

Trump, the Article continues, has “acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government.”

In a letter to his colleagues, Sherman says the Article is “largely based” on an Article that was passed by the Judiciary Committee in 1974 regarding then-President Richard Nixon.

“I would welcome your counsel, input and support,” Sherman says in the letter to his colleagues.

Sherman, for his part, recognizes that the Article will not have any immediate consequence.

“I have no illusions. Articles of Impeachment will not pass the House in the near future. But given the risk posed to the Republic, we should move things forward as quickly as possible,” Sherman, who is Jewish, said in a statement.
