Fall Season Promises a Potpourri of Films

Summer seems to have flown by, and, with fall approaching, it is once more time to examine some upcoming films of interest. Movie critic Emanuel Levy points out that more films than usual of special interest to Jewish audiences are opening this autumn, and they show a growing trend he considers particularly encouraging.\n\n“We’re beginning to see a different kind of image of the Jewish characters in films,” Levy said. “We are seeing stories about Jews who are not merely victims anymore, and I think that’s very positive.”

‘Parade’ Takes a Second Turn

When the Donmar Warehouse production of “Parade” opens at the Mark Taper Forum on Oct. 4, starring T.R. Knight, it will mark the musical’s triumphant return to this country since a disastrous original version failed on Broadway more than a decade ago.

Schwartz’s first opera a dark ‘Séance’

Long before his enormous success with “Wicked” and “Godspell,” composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz studied classical music in college and wrote what he now describes as a “very bad one-act opera.”

A certain magic

Chasidic reggae and rap singer Matisyahu just released his fourth album, “Light” — his first full-length work in three years. He discussed his new music, God, spirituality, sex, drugs and Israel in a phone interview with Rabbi Naomi Levy, spiritual leader of Nashuva and author of “Talking to God” (Knopf, 2002) and “To Begin Again” (Ballantine Books, 1999).
