Torah portion: Abraham–a magnetic leader
While waiting in line at a Los Angeles International Airport gift shop last week, I noticed a colorful display of magnets.
Lech Lecha: From dark to light
Lech Lecha tells the story of the birth of the Jewish people through Avraham’s prophecy. God tells Avram, “I will bless you and make you a great nation.”
The long and winding road: Parashat Lech Lecha (Genesis 12:1–17:27)
The day God pronounced two simple words — lech lecha — Abraham and Sarah’s lives changed forever. God instructs Abraham to leave his homeland, his birthplace and his father’s home, “to the land that I will show you, and there I will make of you a great nation” (Genesis 12:1-2). “Lech lecha,” go forth — and thus the long journey began.
We Matter: Parashat Lech Lecha (Genesis 12:1-17:27)
Last week’s Torah portion ends with a genealogy, a long list of names of who begot whom and how long they lived. It is one of many genealogies in the Torah. It used to be that when I encountered those lists, I tuned out; I found them boring. But then I read a book by Thomas Cahill called “The Gifts of the Jews” (Anchor, 1999).
