Let\’s not kid ourselves: Jewish Community Centers of Greater Los Angeles (JCCGLA) has been hurting for a long, long time.

Flourish, Not Fail

The financial crisis facing Jewish Community Center (JCC) programs and locations this week will come as an awful shock to tens of thousands of area Jews, and it should (see story, page 14).\n\nJCC officials and Federation lay leaders and staff stress there is no cause for panic. They believe they can work out a way to save the majority of JCC programs and locations. (The Federation is the largest donor to the JCC system.) But there is no question that without immediate community response, the JCC system faces severe cutbacks.\n

Parents depending on the Santa Monica-based Bay Cities Jewish Community Center for after-school care reacted with concern last week to the program\’s announced elimination.

When people talk about the San Fernando Valley, non-residents may envision a vast sea of shiny new homes and retail areas, schools and parks, joined seamlessly by a pathway of soccer moms driving sports utility vehicles.

In reality, there are two Valleys — the one where the vehicles aren\’t new and the one with the million-dollar tract homes and gated \”communities.\”
