The Parking Spot Theory

Here\’s my \”Parking Spot Theory\”: Let\’s say you\’re driving around, looking for a parking spot and you can\’t find one. You drive around the block again and, still, nothing. You look up ahead at the other cars circling the block and no one is getting a parking spot. Frustration builds. Then, suddenly, a spot opens up and the guy ahead of you pulls into it. The first thing you think is, \”Damn, that could\’ve been my parking spot.\” Disappointment. Anger.

In Praise of the Righteous Enemy

Once again, the anniversary of the Holocaust is upon us (April 13), and, once again, the commemoration taunts me. \”Go preach the goodness of God.\” \”Go praise the crown of God\’s creation made but little lower than the angels.\” \”Speak to the world of faith and hope in the wake of the terrifying knowledge: 1.5 million children murdered because of their Jewishness, nine out of every 10 European rabbis slaughtered, one third of a people decimated.\”

Torah Portion

The Nazis took my uncle Henry at the beginning ofthe war. He survived more than five years as a slave. Young andstrong, he was a carpenter, and they needed carpenters. At first, they moved him from camp to camp, including a stay at Pleshow, whereSchindler\’s people were kept. And, finally, Auschwitz. A slavelaborer, he built parts of the camp. When the Allies advanced, he wastaken on the infamous Death March from Poland into Germany. He wasliberated from Buchenwald by the U.S. Army in 1945.
