Entrepreneurial spirit

Let’s hear it for lemonade stands! Forty-two percent of entrepreneurs surveyed in a study said their first business venture was during their childhood.

The business bug

My Israeli father was always coming up with ideas for new businesses: a massive three-day cultural festival to boost tourism in Northern Israel; a massage table with mechanical fingers; a restaurant that would serve dozens of little dishes with Israeli salads before the main entrees (this was long before Itzik Hagadol). They never materialized into actual businesses, but the ideas were always flowing.

Business Owners View Greenhouse Gas Reduction as Cultural Imperative

In September 2006, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32), the Global Warming Solutions Act, regulating greenhouse gas emissions throughout the state. This year, the California Air Resources Board will adopt mechanisms to reduce those emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 — a 25 percent reduction — and 80 percent below that by 2050. Such landmark legislation puts California ahead of the country in combating climate change, but critics question whether it will be too expensive to a state already under economic stress.

Ethics Plan Would Raise Sanctity of Business

An observant Jew was once brought before the judge on counts of tax fraud. Seeing the kippah-wearing Jew before him, the judge innocently asked, “Mr. Schwartz, you are clearly a God-fearing man. How do you explain your immoral behavior?”
