ADL, Jewish Groups Criticize Fresno Event for Featuring Speaker with ‘Anti-Semitic’ History

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Central Pacific and other Jewish groups are criticizing an event taking place at Clovis Community College (CCC) on Sept. 18 featuring Alison Weir, a speaker that ADL Central Pacific says uses “anti-Semitic tropes.”

The event, titled “Uncovered: Israel’s Occupation of Palestine,” is hosted by the Fresno-based news outlet GV Wire, which covers issues in the Central Valley. Weir has claimed that Israel harvests Palestinians organs, been featured on a white supremacist radio show and in white supremacist publications and blamed Jews for anti-Semitism, according to Tablet’s Yair Rosenberg. Both Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation have disassociated themselves from Weir over the aforementioned issues.

CCC President Dr. Lori Bennett said in an Aug. 30 statement that the CCC is not sponsoring the event and it is not in any way affiliated with the college or any student groups on campus.

While external organizations pay to rent facilities at Clovis Community College, it does not mean an endorsement of the speaker and/or organization. Clovis Community College is committed to maintaining a safe campus of inclusion and equity for all,” Bennett said. “Clovis Community College does not endorse hate speech or anti-Semitic remarks.”

ADL Central Pacific Regional Director Seth Brysk said in an Aug. 30 statement that they respect Weir’s right to express her views, but that “the leadership of Clovis Community College and other community leaders” should condemn her.

Under the pretense of political activism, Weir routinely employs classic anti-Semitic tropes: Weir blames Jews for anti-Semitism, labeling Jews a ‘race’ that is ‘an object of hatred of all the peoples among whom it has established itself’; promotes versions of the anti-Jewish blood libel (the accusation that Jews prey on gentiles for their blood); and likens Israeli policies to those of the Nazis, a comparison explicitly cited in the respected International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism,” Brysk said.

Other Jewish groups criticized GV Wire for hosting Weir.

We are shocked that GV Wire would organize a talk with someone who seeks airtime on white supremacist shows and has promoted the medieval blood libel that Jews ritually murdered Christian children,” American Jewish Committee Los Angeles said in a statement. “A robust debate on Israel and the Palestinians is important and welcome.  But in the aftermath of the Pittsburgh and Poway killings, and countless other attacks on Jews throughout the country, it is disturbing that someone with a blatantly anti-Semitic history would be given a platform by this media organization.”

Associate Dean and Director of Global Social Action Agenda at the Simon Wiesenthal Center Rabbi Abraham Cooper told the Journal in a phone interview that the event is “an advocacy event” and questioned why GV Wire didn’t also provide a speaker with an opposing viewpoint to Weir to provide more balance on the issue.

“She hates Israel, slanders Israel, devoted her life to doing this in word and in writing,” Cooper said. “She is even too much for people who still feel there’s still spaces for dialogue on the issue. She’s not a dialogue lady, she’s a propagandist.”

StandWithUs CEO and Co-Founder Roz Rothstein similarly said in a statement that Weir is “notorious for spreading vicious hate and wild conspiracy theories about Jews and Israel.” She added that GV Wire and other organizations supporting the event are not legally obligated to carry on with the event.

“If they do not withdraw support from the event, they will be complicit in promoting anti-Semitism – an increasingly deadly form of racism,” Rothstein said.

The Progressive Zionists of California also said in a statement to the Journal, “As a group whose members have experienced her vitriolic attacks first hand, we are shocked that anyone would platform her and her reprehensible views. In 2019, as hate crimes against Jews in California continue to skyrocket, it is irresponsible to endorse such hate.”

GV Wire has not responded to the Journal’s request for comment.

UPDATE 1: Weir said in a statement to the Journal she was “shocked” that the ADL and AJC “are going to such trouble to try to impede my talk at a small college in Clovis, California. As I write here, I think the purpose is to prevent people from learning the facts about Israel-Palestine. The ADL has tried to bully the college, intimidate me, and scare off Fresno/Clovis citizens. But the college hasn’t canceled the event, I’m going to be speaking there, and, I hope, people who live in the Fresno-Clovis area will come to hear me for themselves and make their own decisions.”

She added, “I have written a multitude of articles on Israel-Palestine (some of them are here). Two of them were detailed, thoroughly cited articles about Israel’s connection to organ trafficking. A number of my sources were Israeli news media. You can read them here and here. Both were published by respected, progressive news organizations… I have been interviewed on a multitude of news media, most often liberal or left-wing ones. In my appearances, I provide facts about Israel-Palestine and speak out against all racism, bigotry, and violence.  I feel all Americans, regardless of their race, religion, or political perspective have the responsibility and need to be fully informed about Israel-Palestine, since all of our tax money is going to the over $10 million per day that American politicians give to Israel. You can see our mission statement and principles here.”

Weir also pointed to her response to JVP as well as one of her essays titled, “Anti-Semitism Is Wrong.”

UPDATE 2: GV Wire Publisher Darius Assemi said in a Sept. 4 statement to the Journal, “The mission of GV Wire is to explore, explain and expose. We are bringing Ms. Alison Weir to Clovis Community College as part of our ongoing speaker series. Our hope is that audience members will listen and weigh what she has to say about Israeli and Palestinian relations and decide for themselves the best path to peace.”

He added, “We do not take a position on the speaker’s information. Our goal is to provide different perspectives than those customarily provided by the mainstream media on issues of global concern. Continuing our efforts to examine important topics from all sides, we are reaching out to Jewish organizations to schedule a speaker who will provide a countering viewpoint to Weir’s analysis at a future date in our speaker series.”

Kentucky Gov. Signs Anti-BDS Bill

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) signed a bill cracking down on the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement on Aug. 27, WLEX reports.

The S.B. 143 bill signed into law will prevent state contractors from conducting business with companies that boycott Kentucky’s trade partners, which includes Israel.

Bevin tweeted, “Kentucky condemns the #BDS movement and refuses to tolerate boycott-related tactics used to threaten the sovereignty and security of @Israel or other allies of the United States.”

My colleagues and I condemn the BDS movement,” Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) said at the bill’s signing ceremony, “and we have sent a letter to the Office of Foreign Asset Control requesting an update on the federal government’s oversight of non-governmental organizations engaged in anti-Semitic hate against our allies in Israel and the Jewish people worldwide.”

StandWithUs CEO and Co-Founder Roz Rothstein tweeted that the bill’s signature was “great news.”

In November, Bevin had signed an executive order that barred state contractors from conducting business with those who boycott Israel; S.B. 143 codified that executive order into state law. Kentucky is one of 26 states with anti-BDS laws.

U.S. District Judge Brian Miller threw out a First Amendment challenge to a similar law in Arkansas, ruling that commercial boycotts don’t fall under the purview of protected speech under the First Amendment.

Israel in particular is known for its dynamic and innovative approach in many business sectors, and therefore a company’s decision to discriminate against Israel, Israeli entities, or entities that do business with or in Israel, is an unsound business practice, making the company an unduly risky contracting partner or vehicle for investment,” Miller wrote in his ruling.

ADL Speaks Out Against Jewish Publication Over Articles Attacking LGBTQ Community

NEW YORK (JTA) — The Anti-Defamation League is speaking out against a Jewish newspaper for publishing articles containing inflammatory rhetoric about the LGBTQ community.

Last month, the director of the organization’s New York-New Jersey region sent a letter to the publisher of The Jewish Press expressing concerns about articles denigrating LGBTQ people. The Brooklyn-based paper largely serves the Orthodox Jewish community.

The letter from Evan Bernstein to Naomi Mauer specifically mentions a July op-ed, titled “The Pride Parade: What Are They Proud Of,” that likens gay people marching in the Pride Parade to animals, adulterers and thieves.

“One of the obvious differences between man and animal is that man can curb his desires while animals cannot,” Irwin Benjamin wrote.

Bernstein wrote a letter to the newspaper on July 18, a week after the op-ed appeared.

“[W]e are especially concerned about the impact that The Jewish Press’s use of editorial discretion will have on LGBTQ Jewish youth, in particular, who may already be questioning their place in the Jewish community,” the letter said.

The ADL said it sent the letter in response to more than 25 complaints submitted through its website about the paper’s articles.

Three days before the letter was sent, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency had reported on accusations that the editor of the paper, Elliot Resnick, repeatedly made racist and homophobic remarks on his Twitter account. Resnick in social media posts over the last year has called African religions “primitive” and the gay rights movement “evil.” He also questioned the existence of white supremacists and white nationalists and asked how an adult having sexual relations with a teenager constitutes assault.

At the time, Resnick defended his comments to JTA. Mauer, the publisher, said she told Resnick that the tweets were “unacceptable” but that the paper was not taking any further action.

The Jewish Press describes itself as “the largest independent weekly Jewish newspaper in the United States,” and has a print and online circulation of 95,000, according to its publisher. The publication says it champions “Torah values and ideals from a centrist or Modern Orthodox perspective.” It was a JTA client before ending its subscription in December 2014.

ADL said it made multiple attempts over the span of a month to secure an off-the-record meeting but was unable to do so. Mauer told JTA that the paper had agreed to a meeting, but the ADL canceled when The Jewish Press insisted that it be recorded.

“How recording the meeting would defeat their stated purposes eludes me,” Mauer wrote in an email. “Frankly though, I think that their attempted spin underscores the wisdom of recording the proceedings.”

Asked about ADL’s criticism of the articles, Mauer said the paper was open to hearing its concerns but that as an Orthodox paper, it aims “to reflect the teachings of the Torah in all of our work.”

“We are mindful, however, those teachings are sharply inconsistent with the fundamental views of [t]he LGBTQ community,” Mauer wrote. “But we are also not in the business of trying to hurt people. A meeting with the ADL, given their recent focus on LGBTQ issues, we thought, would help us to better determine whether we were within proper journalistic guidelines in our treatment of those issues — or whether our language can easily be misconstrued.”

Meanwhile, Bernstein told JTA that having off-the-record meetings with publications is standard protocol for ADL.

“We wanted to have a discussion, not something that was going to potentially be used in print,” he said. “We wanted to be able to have a private discussion, and we were not able to have a private discussion, and that’s a shame.”

While Orthodox interpretations of Jewish law prohibit homosexual acts or same-sex physical relationships, a number of Orthodox authorities have called for sensitivity to observant Jews who are gay. Last month, a young Orthodox man from South Africa committed suicide in Israel, reportedly because he was struggling with his sexual orientation.

“The story here is about the teenagers within the LGBTQ community and the struggles they are facing within the Orthodox communities in which they live,” Bernstein said. “Many of these teenagers are shunned from the only lives they know after they come out, and these same communities have access to and could likely read these Jewish Press articles.”

Palestinian Children Stage Mock Attack on Israeli Outpost

A video released on Aug. 29 reveals a group of Palestinian children at the Dar al-Huda school in the Gaza Strip staging a mock attack on an Israeli military outpost during a March kindergarten graduation ceremony.

The NGO Monitor video shows five children wearing Palestinian Islamic Jihad gear and carrying mock firearms. They storm an outpost and capture two children dressed as an Israeli soldier and an Israeli civilian.

NGO Monitor notes that Dar al-Huda has held similar mock terror attacks in 2017 and 2016, highlighting “the rampant incitement to violence and indoctrination of children by Palestinian institutions.”

StandWithUs CEO and Co-Founder Roz Rothstein tweeted, “DISGUSTING indoctrination to hate and murder.”

Islamic Jihad is the second main terror group in Gaza outside of Hamas; Islamic Jihad is more of a pure military organization while Hamas functions as a political and military operator in Gaza. Iran funds both of them.

Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein to Star in Movie Musical—20 Years From Now

Jewish BFFs Ben Platt (“Dear Evan Hansen,” “Pitch Perfect”) and Beanie Feldstein (“Booksmart,” “Lady Bird”) are teaming up to star in a film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical “Merrily We Roll Along,” based on George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s 1934 play of the same name.

But you’ll have to wait a while—quite a while—to see it. The story spans 20 years, and director Richard Linklater is taking that literally. He intends to shoot the movie in installments over the next two decades. The plan worked for him before—he took 12 years to make the acclaimed “Boyhood.”

Platt, who won a Tony Award for the musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” will play a Broadway composer who leaves the theater to produce movies in Hollywood, The story begins at the height of his fame and flashes back to how he achieved it. Feldstein will play his best friend, a theater critic.

“I first saw and fell in love with ‘Merrily’ in the ‘80s and I can’t think of a better place to spend the next 20 years than in the world of a Sondheim musical,” Linklater said in a statement. “I don’t enter this multi-year experience lightly, but it seems the best, perhaps the only way, to do this story justice on film.”

More imminently, Platt stars as ambitious high school student who aims to be president—first the student body, eventually the White House—in the Netflix series “The Politician,” premiering Sept. 27. Feldstein will play Monica Lewinsky in the next installment of FX’s “American Crime Story,” about the White House intern’s infamous affair with Bill Clinton. She’ll also star in the comedy “How to Build a Girl” with Emma Thompson and the family drama “The Humans” with Amy Schumer.

Jewish Women Rule: Gabrielle Carteris, Camryn Manheim Win Actors’ Union Election

Following a contentious battle for re-election, “BH90210” actress Gabrielle Carteris defeated opponent Matthew Modine to retain presidency of the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA with 44% of the votes. Running mate Camryn Manheim, who stars in ABC’s “Stumptown” this fall, was elected secretary-treasurer with 53%. The bitter election campaign was marked by accusations of labor law violations on both sides.

Jeffrey Epstein Criminal Case is Closed

(JTA) — A federal judge in New York formally ended the criminal case against Jeffrey Epstein, the Jewish financier who authorities say killed himself while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

Judge Richard Berman of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York shelved the indictment on Thursday charging Epstein, 66, with sex crimes in the early 2000s in Florida and New York.

During the session, Berman included a reference to a court hearing two days earlier at which 16 women spoke about their claims against Epstein of sexual abuse, some allegedly committed when they were under the age of consent. Statements by several other women were read by their lawyers.

The judge said he was incorporating by reference the hearing’s transcript while he “underscores the significance of the Crime Victims’ Rights Act.” Among other things, the victims’ law ensures crime victims have the right to be heard at public court proceedings regarding the accused.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr has promised the Justice Department will pursue those who enabled Epstein to carry out the sexual assaults.

Epstein was arrested last month. He had pleaded not guilty.

In requesting the shelving of the indictment 10 days earlier, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman, who is not related to the judge, said the law required the dismissal after Epstein killed himself in jail on Aug. 10, The Associated Press reported.

In a First, Israel to Repatriate Jewish Sex Offender to Yemen

(JTA) — An Israeli judge ordered the deportation of a Jewish convicted sex offender back to his native Yemen in a precedent-setting ruling.

The Makor Rishon daily reported Friday about the case of Avraham Salem Alhadad, who immigrated to Israel in 2007 on a student visa.

Alhadad’s visa expired while he was serving a 5 1/2-year prison term handed down in 2014 for molesting and sexually assaulting a minor from his own family. The former student of a religious seminary, or yeshiva, in Bnei Brak was declared an illegal alien upon his release this year.

His application to be naturalized under Israel’s Law of Return for Jews and their relatives was denied citing his criminal record. His application for asylum, based on his claim that his leaving Yemen in 2007 for the Jewish state would expose him to persecution there, also was dismissed.

Last week, a judge ordered the Interior Ministry, which was seeking Alhadad’s deportation to Yemen, to detail how it intended to deport him to a country with which Israel has no diplomatic relations.

According to Makor Rishon, Israel has never deported a Jewish person to Yemen or any other Arab country.

Until the deportation plan is presented, Alhadad, who is married and has a 6-year-old son in Israel, is being held at the Givon detainment facility for those staying in Israel illegally.

Two Nice Jewish Boys: Episode 152 – The Asian American Rabbi Who Sang for Obama

Throughout history, Christianity and Islam have battled it out, each vying to be the dominant religion on our planet. Jews, on the other hand, have done everything within their power to stay inside their tiny communities.

Becoming Jewish, to this day, is extremely difficult. We’ve done a few episodes in the past on the struggles of “orthodox” conversion. The fact of the matter is – if you don’t go full ‘orthodox’, Israel will not consider you a real Jew.

The divide between Orthodox Judaism and other denominations, mainly reform and conservative Judaism, is growing wider and wider. And many people find themselves stuck in this divide.

Rabbi Angela was born in South Korea to a Jewish Father and a Buddhist mother. She grew up in America, and from a young age she experienced demeaning comments, by fellow Jews, doubting her Judaism. And from a young age, she decided she would not let those people dictate her relationship with Judaism.

What led Angela on the path of becoming one of the most influential women Rabbis in America? How did she pave a way from Temple Beth El in Tacoma, Washington, to singing Hanunuka songs to President Obama in the White House? And ultimately, what helped her persevere in spite of all the obstacles she faced?

We’re honored and thrilled to be joined by the Rabbi and Cantor Angela Buchdahl.
