Jews Have Ugly Noses, Belgian Journalist Writes in Column Attacking Israel

(JTA) – Representatives of Flemish Jews filed a police complaint after a Belgian journalist joked about Jews’ noses and accused Israelis of stealing Palestinian land.

The reference to Jewish noses appears in a July 27 column by Dimitri Verhulst the left-leaning Belgian daily De Morgen. Its title, “There is no promised land, only stolen land,” was a paraphrase of a quote attributed to the late French-Jewish singer Serge Gainsbourg.

Verhulst quotes the singer as saying: “Being Jewish is not a religion, no God would give creatures such an ugly nose.” The quote attributed to Gainsbourg speaks neither of God nor ugliness, reading: “Being Jewish is not a religion. No religion makes you grow such a nose.”

The column begins with the words: “Because God has His favorites and they have their privileges, Palestinians were driven out of their homes in 1948 to make place for God’s favorites.” He also accuses Israel of “murdering” 10,000 Palestinians over the past 17 years and writes that “talking to the Chosen is difficult” because they accuse him unjustly, he wrote, of racism for his anti-Israel views.

The Forum of Jewish Organizations of Belgium’s Flemish region called these statements “rabid anti-Semitism” in a statement Friday about the complaint.

Dutch Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs also condemned the column in an op-ed he published Friday in the ND newspaper, calling it “pure anti-Semitism” and adding he is “concerned” that it could be published in a mainstream newspaper.

In 2016, Belgian Jews complained after De Morgen interviewed a Holocaust denier.

Lionel Richie Blocks Pro-BDS Group Following Pressure to Cancel Tel Aviv Concert

World-renowned musician Lionel Richie blocked a pro-boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) group on Twitter after it urged him to cancel his Sept. 12 concert in Tel Aviv.

The anti-war NGO Code Pink tweeted on July 31, “BREAKING: Simply because we started a campaign urging him to stand up for Palestinian human rights and cancel his upcoming show in Apartheid Israel, @LionelRichie blocked us!#LionelDontGo.”

Code Pink then tweeted a link to its petition calling on Richie to cancel the show.

“Palestinian citizens of Israel — 20% of the Israeli population — face over 50 laws that systematically discriminate against them because of their religion and ethnicity. From Gaza to Israel, to the West Bank, it is apartheid,” the petition states. “If you choose to follow through with your performance in Tel Aviv, it will act as an endorsement of Israel’s brutal systems of military occupation and apartheid.”

Various pro-Israel Twitter accounts praised Richie:

BDS activists also attempted to pressure Bon Jovi and Jennifer Lopez to cancel their Tel Aviv concerts on July 25 and August 1 respectively, to no avail.

Richie’s Tel Aviv concert is part of his 2019 “Hello” world tour.

ADL Praises CA Gov’t for Enacting Mezuzah Bill

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) praised the California state government for enacting a bill permitting Jewish residents to hang mezuzahs on their doors.

The bill, SB 652, passed the State Senate on May 6 and unanimously passed the Assembly on July 8. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed it into law on July 30. Sen. Ben Allen (D-Los Angeles), who chairs the California Legislative Jewish Caucus, authored the bill and every member of the caucus signed onto the bill as co-sponsors.

ADL California Legislative Director Nancy Appel said in a statement, “An observant Jewish person would be unable live in a home where placement of a mezuzah on an entry doorframe is not allowed. Enforcement of otherwise neutral and generally applicable rules that prohibit altering the appearance of an exterior doorway has posed a unique hardship for some Jews in California who have been ordered to remove their mezuzahs or face a daily fine.  Although ADL has successfully advocated for affected Jews to enable them to post their mezuzahs, this bill guarantees that they won’t have to face this impossible dilemma in the first place.”

The California Legislative Jewish Caucus tweeted on August 1, “Our ‘Mezuzah Bill’ was signed into law by Governor @GavinNewsom this week! California will no longer be a state that tolerates banning religious items on doors. Big thanks to the @ADL and all others for their support.”

The bill will officially become law on January 1, 2020. Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Rhode Island and Texas are the only other states that have such a law.

According to the Jewish News of Northern California (J), both Allen and the ADL had received myriad complaints “over the years” from Jewish residents that their building owners ordered them to take down their mezuzahs “because of a building or apartment complex policy.”

Allen told the J on July 10 he thought it was “pretty outrageous” and showed “incredible insensitivity” that Jewish residents were being forced to take down their mezuzahs, stating, “We are obligated as Jews to put a mezuzah on our door. It’s part of the v’ahavta.”

According to the bill, “A property owner shall not enforce or adopt a restrictive covenant or any other restriction that prohibits one or more religious items from being displayed or affixed on any entry door or entry door frame of a dwelling.”

The law does provide some exceptions, including instances where the item is “obscene;” prevents a door from being opened or closed; or when the item “threatens public health or safety.”

Anti-Semitic Graffiti Found in Minnesota Elementary School

Anti-Semitic graffiti was found spray-painted on a pair of doors at Lake Harriet Upper Elementary School in southwest Minneapolis on August 1.

The graffiti consisted of a swastika and the words “K***S MUST DIE” in yellow. Minneapolis police told Minnesota Public Radio the incident took place sometime between July 28 and August 1. Police are still investigating.

Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Ed Graff said in an August 1 statement, “In the strongest terms, Minneapolis Public Schools condemns the anti-Semitic attack on our schools and community. We are working closely with the Minneapolis Police Department to find out who did this. Our schools should be safe, respectful and welcoming places for all of our students, families and community members. And we stand united against hatred in all its forms.”

Anti-Defamation League Midwest Regional Director David Goldenberg said in an August 2 statement to the Journal that the graffiti was “another troubling example of the 46 percent increase in school-based anti-Semitic incidents since 2016” and “underscores the importance of teaching the history of anti-Semitism and equipping students and educators with the tools needed to confront hate.”

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Minnesota said in a press release the graffiti was “the 17th anti-Semitic incident” reported to them this year, stating, “We must reject these chilling acts and the hate they represent.”

A Moment in Time: The Sun Rises, and the Sun Sets

Dear all,
Long before Tevya and Golda sang “Sunrise, Sunset” in Fiddler on the Roof, the Biblical writings of Ecclesiastes taught the phrase, “The sun rises, and the sun sets. It hurries back to where it arose” (Ecc. 1:5). Our Rabbis teach that with every beginning, there is an ending…. And that with every ending, there is a beginning. We exist in an incredible cycle.
This hit close to home in the past week. I had taken a time-lapse video of the sunrise in Los Angeles. Then, when I was in Israel, I captured a time-lapse of the sun set. I realized – somewhere in the world, at any given moment in time, the sun is rising. And at that same moment in time, the sun is setting somewhere else.
It really puts life into perspective. Sometimes we need to step outside of our zone to harness the pulse of the universe – and to measure our purpose each day.
With love and shalom,
Rabbi Zach Shapiro

Jordan Shutters Gravesite Where Jewish Pilgrims Prayed

(JTA) – Jordan’s religion minister, Abed al Nasr abu Bassel, ordered a gravesite holy to Jews closed following prayers there.

The closure Friday of the presumed gravesite of Aharon the Cohen, a biblocal figure who according to the Torah had acted as an aide and spokesperson to Moses, followed a mass prayer there earlier this week by 500 pilgrims from Israel at the gravesite, located about 100 miles north of Eilat.

A statement by the ministry called the pilgrimage “illegal” and stated that the Jordanians responsible for allowing pilgrims access to the site will be “held accountable,” Ynet reported Friday.

Jewish Cemetery Vandalized in the Czech Republic

(JTA) — A Jewish cemetery was vandalized in a village in the Czech Republic, where unidentified perpetrators smashed at least one headstone and etched obscene drawing on several others.

Police have no suspects in custody in connection with last week’s incident in Osoblaha in a northeastern district of the Central European country.

In addition to toppling and smashing at least one headstone, the perpetrators also drew male genitals on one headstone and a smiley face on another, the Coordination Forum For Countering Antisemitism reported on its website Wednesday.

Anti-Semitic violence and vandalism is commonplace across Eastern Europe but relatively rare in the Czech Republic.

Polls conducted in that country consistently suggest that anti-Semitic sentiments are significantly less prevalent there than in neighboring countries.

In a 2015 survey of 19 countries conducted by the Anti-Defamation League, 13 percent of Czech respondents displayed what ADL considered anti-Semitic sentiments. That figure was the lowest in Eastern Europe, far behind the regional average of 34 percent.

J-Lo Visits Western Wall After Tel-Aviv Show

Jenny from the block, or Jenny from the shuk?

On Friday, global superstar Jennifer Lopez visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem, following a hyped, albeit controversial, Thursday night concert in Tel Aviv. The 50-year-old singer performed in Tel Aviv on Aug. 1 despite pressure by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement to cancel her performance.

Lopez is not the first major artist to face pressure from the BDS movement to cancel a scheduled concert in the Jewish State. Bon Jovi, Radiohead and Lorde all recently garnered criticism for performances planned in Israel. In the face of pressure from anti-Israel activists, however, Bon Jovi and Radiohead went on with their shows, while Lorde capitulated and cancelled.

Now that J-Lo has visited the Western Wall, the “I’m Real” singer has to record, “Is-Real.”
