Jewish Gay Conversion Group Operating Under New Name Ordered to Shut Down

A New Jersey judge ordered a Jersey City-based Jewish gay conversion therapy organization to permanently shut down.

Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality, or JONAH, settled with former clients in a 2015 lawsuit and agreed to stop its discredited gay conversion counseling. But it has since been operating under a new name — Jewish Institute for Global Awareness, or JIFGA — Hudson County Superior Court Assignment Judge Peter Barisio said in his ruling, according to NJ.com.

Arthur Goldberg and Elaine Berk, the organization’s co-founders, have been collecting fees to refer clients to other groups that offer gay conversion therapy. Barisio ordered them to refund any money they have made through JIFGA and cease all operations within 30 days.

According to court testimony, JONAH told clients to undress in front of each and beat effigies of their mothers to overcome sexual urges, NJ.com reported.

Langer’s Deli Owner Defends Kicking Out Couple for Kissing

Langer’s Deli, a kosher-style deli in Westlake, Los Angeles, is receiving backlash after a woman was allegedly kicked out of the restaurant June 8 for kissing her female date.

EaterLA reported that the woman, Rachel Curry, shared her negative experience claiming that the owner, Norm Langer, approached their table and told them they were violating the deli’s Public Display of Affection (PDA) policy. Curry also said that Langer told the couple that “he can’t have this in his restaurant because some of the customers don’t understand.”

Following the post, she wrote the hashtag #boycottlangers.

Norm Lange wrote in a statement on Twitter June 13 that his family restaurant is “open and inclusive to all people.”

“Anyone who comes to our family restaurant is treated equally and with respect,” the statement said. “We are one of the only unionized family restaurants in Los Angeles and empty people of various races, religions and sexual orientation. We treat all customers equally and never discriminate.”

The statement went on to explain that they have a “long-standing policy” against anyone “making out” whether they are in a homosexual or heterosexual relationship.

“I have stopped heterosexual couples from making out, and I would do the same if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were making out,” Langer said. “I apologize if some people do not like our policy.”

Instagram user @Duhnay went to Instagram June 12 to defend Langer’s, saying it was just a misunderstanding. Duhnay said she has been a Langer’s employee for three months and “will continue my employment because I know firsthand that @langersdeli is a safe place for ALL people.” Duhnay added that she and her wife have never experienced “lude or disrespectful comments” and that Langer “welcomed my wife to his estblishment with open arms.”

“I encourage people of the LGBTQ+ community to come to @langersdeli” she said. “See for yourself the kind of space it is and meet Norm Langer yourself who is always there standing on the side of the deli greeting and conversing with customers new and old.”

Senate Unanimously Passes Bipartisan Resolution Denouncing Anti-Semitism

The Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution on Thursday that denounced anti-Semitism in each of its manifestations, according to a press release on Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Tex.) website.

Cruz, who co-sponsored the resolution along with Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), said on the floor of the Senate Thursday, “We are in the midst of a wave of anti-Semitism seen both here in the United States and all over the world. In just the last few years, we have seen repeated anti-Semitic comments made publicly, including insinuations questioning the loyalty and the patriotism of American Jews. We’ve seen physical violence against Jews, including shootings in Jewish places of worship such as the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh and the Chabad in Poway. We’ve seen a wave of physical attacks against Jews in the streets of New York. And we have seen the growth on our college campuses of movements to aggressively boycott products made by Jews in Israel. And as we’ve learned this week, things have gotten so bad that The New York Times has announced it will simply stop running political cartoons in their International edition after being criticized and forced to apologize for recently running a blatantly anti-Semitic cartoon.”

Cruz criticized the House of Representatives’ March resolution for watering down anti-Semitism as just another form of bigotry.

“There’s of course nothing wrong with condemning bigotry and hatred in general,” Cruz said. “But anti-Semitism is a unique prejudice, with a unique history, that has led to unique horrors throughout history. Jews today are the most targeted religious group in the United States for hate crimes, according to the data compiled by the FBI. We need to be able to acknowledge that clearly and directly and that’s what this resolution does.”

The Texas senator proceeded to highlight the various forms of anti-Semitism that the resolution denounces, including boycotts against Jewish businesses, dual loyalty tropes and violent acts against Jews. But Cruz wanted to especially focus the portion of the resolution stating that “Jews have suffered from systematic discrimination in the form of exclusion from home ownership in certain neighborhoods, prohibition from staying in certain hotels, restrictions upon membership in private clubs and other associations, limitations upon admission to certain educational institutions, and other barriers to equal justice under the law” in the United States.

“This is a shameful legacy and it makes it all the more incumbent that we as a Senate, speak in one voice and stand resolved that the United States condemns and commits to combating all forms of anti-Semitism,” Cruz said.

Kaine said in a statement, “Right now, we are seeing an uptick in hate crimes against Jewish communities. We have to acknowledge that anti-Semitism is real, it’s dangerous, and it’s growing. Those of us in leadership positions need to stand up against it, and I’m grateful that Senator Cruz reached out to work together on this bipartisan effort. I’m proud the Senate came together to unanimously pass our resolution that shows we will do everything in our power to combat this rise in anti-Semitism.”

The Anti-Defamation League thanked Cruz and Kaine in a tweet.

Senior Vice President for Public Policy & Director of The Jewish Federations of North America’s Washington D.C. office William Daroff said in a statement, “By calling out the long history of discrimination & acts of hatred directed against the Jewish people, the Senate has taken a concrete step towards standing up for our community and fighting the scourge of anti-Semitism.”

The resolution, which was first introduced on May 2, had 56 co-sponsors. Fourteen of those co-sponsors were Democrats.

Another resolution was passed Thursday condemning the shooting at Chabad of Poway in April that resulted in the murder of Lori Gilberty-Kaye at the age of 60. Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) spearheaded the resolution.

The Talmud Just Told me Unicorns Exist – A poem for parsha Naso

[The Gershonite families] shall carry the curtains of the Mishkan
and the Tent of Meeting. Its covering and the tachash skin…

If it’s been your dream to be responsible for the curtains
pray that you were born a Gershonite.

The tachash skin too. (And you’ll do what you’re told
because the Cohen family is in charge and

who doesn’t love a good hierarchy?)
And if you want to know what the tachash skin is

that you’re responsible for, well, you’re not alone.
Ancient people said it is blue or violet from the hyacinth

Or the fur of the weasel, or another clean animal
that lived in the wilderness back when they invented

the curtains to end all curtains. But my favorite possibility,
of all the possibilities, is that the tachash might have been

the skin of a unicorn. Not that I think that unicorns
should ever be skinned – it’s so hard just to find one

to pet – But if the Talmud suggests that a unicorn
could have existed at all, even if it didn’t make it on the ark

even if it’s only ever half a peripheral glimpse away
even if it never moves past the stuff of my dreams,

then I might have just found something
I can believe in again.

US Embassy Branch in Tel Aviv Decorated for Pride Parade Despite Trump Ban

The U.S. Embassy branch office in Tel Aviv decorated its building with rainbow flag banners for the city’s Pride parade, ignoring a Trump administration ban on flying the Pride flag at diplomatic missions.

A photo of the building decked out in two rainbow banners and rainbow streamers was published on the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem’s official Twitter account on Thursday.

“The U.S. Embassy Branch Office in Tel Aviv is ready for the PRIDE parade tomorrow!” the tweet said.

Prior to Pride Month, the Trump administration issued an official ban on U.S. embassies flying the signature rainbow flag on their flagpoles. Four U.S. embassies reportedly were explicitly denied permission to fly a Pride flag, including Israel. The other three are Germany, Brazil and Latvia.

“(W)hen it comes to the American flagpole, and American embassies, and capitals around the world, one American flag flies,” Vice President Mike Pence told NBC news earlier this week when asked about the ban.

U.S. diplomats in Jerusalem reportedly joined the city’s Pride parade last week, according to Haaretz.

French Imam Says Anti-Zionists ‘Say Anti-Semitic Things in a More Polite Manner’

A French imam told the Jerusalem Post on June 12 that anti-Zionism is essentially anti-Semitism expressed cloaked in respectful language.

Imam Hassen Chalgoumi, who is leading a French Muslims for Israel delegation, told the Post, “Anti-Zionist propaganda is a mask; it is actually anti-Semitic, but is used to say anti-Semitic things in a more polite manner. What characterizes anti-Zionism is hatred. If we were simply talking about criticism of the State of Israel, we wouldn’t see the hatred and talk of the need to wipe out and destroy Israel.”

Chalgoumi added that a key reason as to why anti-Semitism is rising in France is due to Islamist groups like the Muslim Brotherhood promulgating “old anti-Semitic tropes, such as Jews controlling the world, being rich” and expressing their “hatred of Israel.”

There was a 74 percent spike in anti-Semitic incidents in France from 2017 to 2018, and 95 percent of Jews in France view anti-Semitism as a serious problem in the country, according to The New Republic.

“France has the largest Jewish population in Europe and the third largest in the world,” the New Republic’s Jess McHugh wrote in March. “Anti-Semitism in the country springs not only from fringe online groups but also from a long history of Jewish persecution and a contemporary anti-establishment surge. Today, Jewish historians and advocacy groups say, the far-left, the far-right, and radical Muslims—groups with few shared interests, historically—are finding common ground in anti-Semitism and the gilets jaunes [yellow vests movement]. And as they do so, the language of anti-Semitism is shifting, making it particularly hard to track and filter as new laws would demand.”

This shift is manifesting itself into language conflating “Israel’s policies with Jews everywhere,” McHugh wrote.

Jewish Journal Editor-In-Chief David Suissa argued in a May 29 Op-ed that anti-Zionism is worse than anti-Semitism because “anti-Semitism revolves around an emotion — hate. Anti-Zionism revolves around an action — destruction.” Suissa added that anti-Semites can’t be open about their Jew-hatred, so instead “they work to undermine, in sneaky ways, the world’s only Jewish state.”

Pompeo Blames Iran for Gulf of Oman Attack

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the June 13 attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman Thursday.

According to Reuters, it is believed that a torpedo struck the Norwegian Front Altair tanker is believed to have been attacked with a torpedo; a magnetic mine may have cause the attack on the other tanker, the Japanese Kokuka Courageous. Both tankers were sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.

There have been no reported casualties at this time.

Pompeo said in a press conference that Iran was responsible for the attacks “based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication.” He added that Iran is following through on its April 22 declaration to disrupt oil trade in the Strait of Hormuz as a way to lash out against the United States’ “maximum pressure campaign” to force Iran into ceasing its aggression in the Middle East.

“These unprovoked attacks present a clear threat to international peace and security, a blatant assault on the freedom of navigation and an unacceptable campaign of escalating tension by Iran,” Pompeo said.

The attacks come as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to meet with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on Thursday. Iran has denied involvement in the matter and claimed that they rescued 44 sailors from the attacks; the U.S. has called Iran’s claim “patently false.”

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been escalating of late, as in May the U.S. deployed myriad warships and bombers to the Persian Gulf in response to an unspecified threat from Iran against U.S. interests in the Middle East. President Donald Trump tweeted at the time, “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again!”

A Moment in Time: If Only…

Dear all,
On my way home last week, I filled my car up with gas. I stopped for coffee. I also took a slightly out of the way route.
And then it happened…. As I was driving, another car opened its door into mine, damaging the passenger side mirror.
No one was hurt, but the incident was enough to send my car to the shop.
Going though my mind was:
If only I hadn’t stopped for gas …
If only I hadn’t gotten coffee ….
If only I hadn’t taken the scenic route …
… then I would have passed that area without any incident.  My timing was just off.
We’ve all been there, questioning every past moment. The truth is, we can’t turn back the clock.
But we can control how we deal with the present.
Will I be level-headed in talking with the other driver?
Will I treat the person in the car shop kindly?
Will the frustration of the incident color how I enter my home?
We can’t live in a world of “If only I hadn’t….” It’s a collision course. Rather, our lives should be about, “What opportunity will there be if I …”
And harnessing the difference between these two takes a moment in time.
With love and Shalom,
Rabbi Zach Shapiro
