Here’s What You Need to Know About the April 27 Gaza Riots

As has become the norm on Fridays, the terror group Hamas led another round of riots on April 27, featuring the usual violence that caused the Israel Defense Force (IDF) to intervene.

According to Hamas’s Gaza Health Ministry, three Palestinians were killed and over 300 were injured in the April 27 riots. Once again, scores of rioters were attempting to penetrate the border fence.

“The rioters approached the security fence and hurled explosive devices, grenades, firebombs and rocks and tried to light the security fence on fire,” an IDF spokesman told the Times of Israel. “In response, IDF troops operated in accordance with the rules of engagement and thwarted the attempted infiltration.”

Rioters also chucked burning tires and flaming kites across the border. The IDF is claiming that they only began using gunfire and riot dispersal measures after the rioters ignored the IDF’s warnings to stay away from the fence.

“IDF troops have used riot dispersal means and have fired in accordance with the rules of engagement,” an IDF spokesman told the Jerusalem Post. “The IDF operates to protect Israeli civilians and will not allow the security infrastructure that protects [civilians] to be damaged.”

Here are some scenes from the riots:

United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein condemned Israel’s response to the riots.

“I am extremely concerned that by the end of today — and next Friday, and the Friday after that — more unarmed Palestinians who were alive this morning will have been killed, simply because, while exercising their right to protest, they approached a fence, or otherwise attracted the attention of the soldiers on the other side,” Zeid said. “Israel’s failure to consistently prosecute violations committed by members of its security forces, encourages them to use deadly force against their fellow unarmed human beings, even when they present no threat.”

Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon fired back Al Hussein for ignoring how Hamas has instigated the riots and is using civilians as human shields to breach the border fence and launch terror attacks against Israel.

“This statement proves once again that the High Commissioner is not focused on human rights, but only with obsessively criticizing Israel,” Danon said.

A Conversation - A Poem for Haftarah Acharei Mot-Kedoshim by Rick Lupert

A Conversation – A Poem for Haftarah Acharei Mot-Kedoshim by Rick Lupert

Did I not bring Israel up
from the land of Egypt?

I think that was You.
They keep telling me
over and over that
it was You.

I will destroy [the sinful kingdom]
from upon the face of the earth.

Is there a way we could teach
without destroying?

I will not destroy the
house of Jacob

I have every confidence this
delights the descendants of
the house of Jacob, and
terrifies the missing descendants
of everyone else.

I will scatter the house of Israel
among all the nations

I know you mean this as
a punishment, but it feels
kind of briar patch to me.
There’s nothing I like more than
to see the spectacles of
other nations.

I will close up [David’s] breaches,
I will raise up its ruins

We’ve all been wanting to
say something about David’s
open breaches, but no-one has
had the balls. As for the ruins,
thank You for that too. Construction
costs have made the project
inaccessible to us.

Behold days are coming, says the Lord,
that the plowman shall meet the reaper

I had a feeling about those two
and I can’t wait to see what comes
from their collaboration.

and the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall melt

How will this affect the property values?
We’re so fond of the hills and…well, I
guess it will make the bicycles easier
to ride. Would it be alright if we
gathered the wine drippings for
our own purposes?

and they shall plant vineyards
and drink their wine

I didn’t mean to interrupt. I see You were
just getting to the details about the wine.

and they shall no longer be uprooted from
upon their land, that I have given them

I’m ready to lay down my hat.
I’m ready to put my feet in the dirt.
I’m ready to re-familiarize myself with this gift.
I can’t thank You enough.
This is the system the banks
never told me about, but my
father-in-law has been speaking of
this whole time.

Rosner’s Torah-Talk: Parashat Achrei-Mot Kedoshim with Rabbi Elyssa Joy Austerklein

Rabbi Elyssa Joy Austerklein serves as senior rabbi of Beth El Congregation in Akron, Ohio. She is a graduate of Brandeis University, BU School of Theology, and the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College. She is an artist, yogi, Rabbis Without Borders Fellow, and was named one of America’s 33 most inspiring rabbis of 2015 by The Forward. She is a devoted wife and mother.

We read two parshas this week. Parashat Acharei Mot (Leviticus 16:1-18:30) – describes the Tabernacle ceremony of the Day of Atonement, establishes general rules for sacrifice and sanctuary, and lays down specific laws about sexual relationships. Our discussion focuses on the curious practice of sending a goat to ‘Azazel’ on Yom Kippur as part of the process of atonement.

Parashat Kedoshim (Leviticus 19:1- 20:27)- features God telling Moses to give the people of Israel a set of rules which are meant to help them live a life of holiness. These rules include variations on several of the ten commanments, as well as different laws concerning basic ethical behavior (prohibitions on cheating, stealing and false oaths), harvest,  religious rituals, and sexual conduct.
