Drop charges against 'Irvine 11,' Jewish faculty urges

Thirty University of California Jewish studies faculty members asked the Orange County district attorney to drop criminal charges against 11 Muslim students. The faculty members, from seven University of California campuses, are the second Jewish group to come out in support of the students, who have been charged with disrupting a February 2010 speech by Israeli U.S. Ambassador Michael Oren at the University of California, Irvine. The Jewish Voice for Peace organization also supports dropping charges against the students.

Gingrich calls for U.S. Embassy move to Jerusalem

Newt Gingrich, a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2012, called on the next U.S. leader to move the country\’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House of Representatives and congressman from Georgia, proposed a series of Executive Orders that he believes the next president should sign on his first day in office.

NPR exec heard saying that Jews control print media [VIDEO]

A National Public Radio executive who was set to leave the station has apologized for videotaped comments that include saying that Jews control the print media. Ron Schiller, president of the NPR Foundation and vice president for development, said his resignation scheduled for May 6 would take effect \”immediately\” after the video was disclosed Tuesday.

The sinister one-two punch: Creating hatred again

The boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign against the state of Israel is nothing new. Prejudice, isolation and punishment of Jews, an earlier form of BDS has recurred over the past 2,000 years. In Europe and the Middle East, Jewish people were isolated, demonized, and then persecuted and murdered in pogroms, Inquisitions, and wars. In 1930s Europe, Jews faced economic, cultural, and social boycotts that paved the way for the Holocaust. Since the 1940s, Arab states have imposed strict boycotts of Israel. The players may be different, but they all follow the same playbook: the sinister one-two punch. The first punch unleashes lies and distortions to foment hatred. The second punch demands draconian punishments, such as BDS.

When Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell sat down for an interview before a crowd of nearly 1,000 in Washington, D.C., last year, his interlocutor, New York Times columnist David Brooks, wondered why the political heavyweight had agreed to openly discuss a matter as sensitive as his diplomatic efforts. “Dan Shapiro told me to come,” Mitchell told Brooks and the standing-room-only crowd at the District’s Sixth & I Historic Synagogue. “When he gave me the order, I saluted.”

Why I support J Street

I joined more than 2,400 pro-Israel, pro-peace activists — students and American and Israeli leaders, including five members of the Knesset, dozens of members of Congress and 100 rabbis, last week in Washington, D.C., at J Street’s second national conference. Although I am the rabbi of a congregation, I went as an individual representing no one but myself. I did so as a committed Zionist who loves Israel, who worries about her security and who wishes her to remain a strong, Jewish, pluralistic and democratic state.

A UN resolution against hypocrisy

Writing a column protesting the hypocrisy of the United Nations is not really fair. It’s like a turkey shoot. The evidence is so overwhelming that the U.N. is viciously biased against Israel — and ridiculously biased in favor of the Palestinians — that you’re tempted to just move on to a less depressing subject.
