Court: Swedish man can be deported to Poland

A Swedish court ruled that the man accused of organizing the theft of the \”Arbeit Macht Frei” sign from the front gate of Auschwitz can be extradited to Poland.\n\nAnders Hogstrom, a former Swedish neo-Nazi, can be handed over to Polish authorities, the court ruled Thursday.\n\nHogstrom is suspected of ordering five Polish men to steal the metal sign. He reportedly acted as an agent for a British Nazi sympathizer who wanted it.\n

Hamas frees British journalist held in Gaza

A British journalist held in Gaza for nearly a month was released.\n\nPaul Martin, a freelance journalist and filmmaker, was turned over to British officials on Thursday, according to the BBC.\n\nMartin, 55, has filed freelance reports for the BBC, Al Jazeera International, CNN and Britain\’s Channel 4 News.\n

Israel destroys West Bank building foundations

Israel\’s Civil Administration, accompanied by Israeli troops, destroyed six new building foundations in Jerusalem\’s Etzion bloc.\n\nFive of the foundations destroyed Wednesday night in the Bat Ayin community were for private homes and one was for a synagogue, according to reports.\n\nEarlier Wednesday, the Civil Authority demolished a building foundation in the settlement of Yakir. Residents protested during the demolition.

PA cancels ceremony honoring hijacker

The Palestinian Authority canceled a ceremony to honor a woman who led the 1978 hijacking of a bus in which 35 Israelis were killed.\n\nA traffic circle in Ramallah was supposed to be named for Dalal Mughrabi and a memorial plaque unveiled Thursday, according to reports.\n\nThe event was canceled Wednesday to avoid antagonizing visiting U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, according to reports. Biden already has been surprised during the visit by an Israeli ministry\’s announcement of an approval to build 1,600 apartments in a ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in eastern Jerusalem.\n

Palestinians say no talks until housing project axed

Palestinians will not enter into indirect peace talks with Israel until approval to build 1,600 homes in an eastern Jerusalem neighborhood is rescinded.\n\nPalestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly made the decision Wednesday night. He was backed up on Thursday by statements from chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat.\n\n\”We want to hear from [United States envoy George] Mitchell that Israel has canceled the decision to build housing units before we start the negotiations,\” Erekat said, according to the German news agency DPA.\n
