Madoff victims selling antique Judaica

From yesterday’s New York Post:

BELIEVE it or not, one industry actually benefited from Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme. Antique auctioneer Jonathan Greenstein told Page Six rare Judaic artifacts that “haven’t seen the light of day in generations” are surfacing in light of the desperate times some collectors are facing. Two victims, Rabbi Alexander Schindler and wife Rhea, “lost a substantial sum of money” with Madoff, said Greenstein. They now plan to recoup some cash by putting an ancient Torah crown and a diamond-encrusted Torah pointer from Amsterdam up for auction

“When a rabbi has to sell off his artifacts,” Lilit Marcus responded at Jewcy, “what have we come to?”

Lindsay Lohan: From Jewish to Jail?

Not exactly. The tabloid-clinging starlet who, weeks ago, was scouting synagogues in London for a rumored wedding to girlfriend Samantha Ronson (and who then announced she was converting to Judaism) averted an arrest warrant earlier today.

According to the L.A. Times (whose reports come from gossip website TMZ), all’s well in Lohan-land. The $50,000 arrest warrant for the “Mean Girls” star was rescinded and Lohan’s lawyer proved she actually did, in fact, attend those three “missed” days of post-rehab alcohol education. Or, perhaps the arrest warrant was due to her weekend road trip to Las Vegas, where she partied with aforementioned girlfriend at swanky nightclub. Apparently, after two 2007 DUI’s, her driving privileges are restricted and she can only commute to and from WORK. So, what in the heck was she doing seeking refuge at Jack Nicholson’s house???

More from the L.A. Times:

Despite a $50,000 warrant for her arrest and the cops being called to her house last weekend for a domestic disturbance, Lindsay Lohan was not in court today. Lohan’s attorney Shawn Chapman Holley was there on behalf of her client.

And everything’s OK. Much ado about nothing, reports TMZ. The LiLo arrest warrant has been recalled!

According to TMZ, the alcohol ed program director told them that Lohan missed three days of class in 21 days. But Lohan’s attorney apparently showed proof of compliance.

OK, so why did Lohan seek sanctuary at Jack Nicholson’s home over the weekend? If ever there was a bad place for an unbalanced, possibly inebriated and dramatic young girl to seek sanctuary, it’s gotta be at Jack’s shack.

Watch the video of her at Nicholson’s gate here.

“What the hell is going on out there?” a sleepy-sounding Nicholson asks. “What do you want me to do, honey?”

He opens the gate, almost crushing the paps shooting her.

Obama will talk to Leno on ‘The Tonight Show’

That history-making Barack Obama is at it again with another historic “first.” As if becoming the first African-American president in U.S. history wasn’t enough, he will become the first sitting president—drum roll please—to appear on a late-night talk show. President Obama will hit the couch with Jay Leno on this Thursday’s “The Tonight Show,” presumably to discuss his economic recovery plan.

More from Huffington Post, New York Times Caucus Blog and…

An interesting bit from the L.A. Times:

By taking a seat Thursday night on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Obama will become the first sitting president to appear in such an unlikely venue, erasing—perhaps once and for all—any vestige of the line that separates news from entertainment.

It will also extend Obama’s habit of speaking past the Washington press corps and ditching the capital for events that distance him from the Beltway status quo; for those keeping accounts, Obama may be sending a signal by going on the “Tonight Show” and then skipping Saturday night’s Gridiron Club dinner.

The evening of music and comedy hosted by an exclusive Washington journalists’ organization is a white-tie highlight of the capital’s social season. But Obama plans to spend the evening with his family, becoming the first president since Grover Cleveland not to show up for the first Gridiron dinner of his presidency.

“He’s kind of setting a tone that he’s not going to be restrained by the rules,” said Michael Dimock, associate director of Washington’s nonpartisan Pew Research Center

From mafia to movie moguls: David Chase debuts miniseries on the creation of Hollywood

Sopranos creator David Chase will write and produce a new HBO miniseries about the creation of Hollywood. The series, titled “A Ribbon of Dreams” comes from the Orson Welles metaphor, “A film is a ribbon of dreams.” The story focuses on two men from different backgrounds who rise through the ranks of the incipient film industry, encountering a slew of Hollywood legends along the way.

The question is, will the Italian-mafia expert tell the story of the Jews who invented Hollywood?

None of the early reports on the show indicate Chase’s intentions with the project, other than establishing its basic plot. It is said that the two fictional leads will encounter D.W. Griffith, John Ford, Bette Davis and Billy Wilder (yes, a Jew). But other than that, word is mum.

From the New York Times ArtsBeat

Having previously struck gold for HBO with his mobster series “The Sopranos,” the writer and producer David Chase is returning to the cable channel with a new mini-series about men who swear relentlessly and resort to ruthless tactics to get ahead, only this time, it’s set in Hollywood. In a release, HBO said that Mr. Chase’s mini-series would be called “A Ribbon of Dreams” (taken from Orson Welles’s famous metaphor for film) and would follow two characters through the birth and development of the American motion picture industry. The two protagonists, a mechanical engineer and a cowboy, will begin working for D.W. Griffith, and encounter the likes of John Wayne, Bette Davis and Billy Wilder as they rise through the business. No casting or premiere date was announced.

Did Former JDL Boss Confess to Bomb Plots?

Looking briefly at this, the “news” seems to be that Rubin admitted to what the government charged (and Krugel admitted), i.e, they planned to blow up the mosque and Issa’s office. I think few people, other than Irv’s wife, thought otherwise.

What’s more intriguing to me, if the FBI papers are genuine, is that Rubin might have had a change of heart toward Arabs/Palestinians

The Enterprise Report has the story:

“Never-before-seen FBI documents obtained by The Enterprise Report reveal Jewish Defense League Chairman Irv Rubin, while jailed on federal terrorism charges in 2002, claimed he admitted his role in a plot to bomb a mosque and the office of a Congressman just before Rubin slit his throat and jumped from a 20-foot-high railing.

Rubin later died from his injuries.

“I am a bad Jew,” Rubin allegedly told a fellow inmate, who also told FBI agents Rubin had befriended two Palestinian prisoners in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Downtown Los Angeles and had begun to reconsider his lifelong anger towards Arabs.

“Rubin told (name deleted) that what he did hurt the Jewish people and the Jewish cause,” one inmate said.”  more from The Enterprise Report .

Israeli arms dealer goes Bollywood

This is very funny. The video embedded above is courtesy Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which used it as marketing materials at last month’s Aero India 2009 trade fair. The Lede reports:

Saurabh Joshi of the Web site StratPost, which covers defense and strategic affairs in South Asia, saw the video “displayed on large screen televisions” at the Rafael stall at Aero India 2009 and asked a company representative what they were thinking. Assy Josephy told Mr. Joshi: “In Israel we have Jewish people from India, so we know about Bollywood and the song and dance numbers.” The video, he added, was intended “to help build familiarity between India and Israel and Rafael.”

While Mr. Joshi seemed impressed with what he called the “innovative video,” other reviews have not been so kind. On Wired’s Danger Room blog, Noah Shachtman called Rafael’s production “the most atrocious defense video of all time.” Stephen Trimble, on his DEW Line blog called it a “catastrophic collision of Bollywood and the arms industry, and dared his readers to watch the video “and, if you’re able, immediately erase the awful tune from your brain.”

As Mr. Shachtman points out, the song and dance number does seem to imply that “the Indian military is somehow like a helpless woman” with, as the lyrics suggest, a “need to feel safe and sheltered” by the arms maker, personified in the video by the male singer.

Thanks to Rachel for the link.

Save us from this bull in a china shop

The concerns about Avigdor Lieberman becoming Israel’s next Foreign Minister remind me of a Jewish telegram: “Start worrying. Details to follow.”

Indeed, in an era when Israel’s image is not so shiny, the idea of someone who seems like a bully, who lives in a settlement and who uses strong language to express his radical views is not ideal.

But, looking carefully at his recent statements to the Washington Post and New York’s Jewish Weekly, Lieberman seems less scary on peace. Like other right-wingers before him — Sharon, Olmert and Livni, to name a few — he realises a Palestinian state is a fait accompli. He even hinted at giving up his home settlement for real peace.

It is his views about the Israeli Arabs, not his stand on the peace process, which should worry us. Six decades of conflict have put the Arab residents of Israel — 20 per cent of the state’s population — in a situation where, according to a painful saying, “my country is at war with my people”. If we were smart, we would have made them the happiest people in Israel, fully integrated and equal, thus turning them into our perfect ambassadors, conveying the message to other Arabs: “See what you get when you live in peace with the Jews”. Instead we have treated them unfairly and are surprised they are bitter.

Then along comes Lieberman with his past suggestions of a land swap and more recent calls for Israeli Arabs’ citizenship to be conditional on an oath of loyalty.

In such a complex situation, where national sentiments, cultural differences, social grievances, prejudice and fear create an explosive mix, the last thing we need is a bull in a china shop. And we Jews, of all people, with our history of being a persecuted minority, should be more sensitive than anybody else.

The good news is that he will not last long in his new job. Either police investigations about his money deals will force him to resign; or, most likely, a fight with Netanyahu. These two strange bedfellows can’t stand or trust each other. Until it happens, however, we’re in for some interesting times.

Scientology spokesman confirms South Park story of the evil lord Xenu

I’m not too familiar with Britian’s The Register, but they’ve got a story reporting that a Scientology spokesman has confirmed, after years of official denial, that “mankind’s problems stem from brainwashed alien soul remnants created millions of years ago by genocidal alien overlord Xenu.”

The news site reports:

In an interview with KESQ News Channel 3, Scientology spokesman Tommy Davis was quizzed over the Xenu story, which leaked papers show is revealed to senior Scientologists as part of their induction to “Operating Thetan Level III”. Davis at first denied the story, as he had done in the past.

However, when the KESQ reporter read from a book written by Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard which refers to the Xenu story, Davis admitted that the story is authentic, albeit confidential and restricted. He then laid into KESQ reporter Nathan Baca, accusing him of “forwarding an agenda of hate”.

The Xenu story has previously been routinely denied by senior Scientologists, including actor Tom Cruise (story here). The Church of Scientology has long used copyright and trade secrecy laws in legal actions designed to suppress the tale.

According to anti-Scientology protest group Anonymous, a shows Scientology founder Hubbard giving a lecture on OT III. A handwritten document summarising the Xenu story, in Hubbard’s own handwriting, has also turned up, it adds.

I don’t read as much of an admission into the KESQ transcript. Thoughts?

Who watches the Watchmensch?

More from the “Watchmen” files: How about a Yiddish version of the classic graphic novel. That’s right. Complete Yiddish dialogue, Jewish jokes and black hats—wasn’t this a Michael Chabon novel? The big surprise is that the author, Rich Johnston, isn’t Jewish.

From JTA:

“Watchmensch” follows a similar trajectory to its predecessor, starting with the death of the Comedian—known in “Watchmensch” as Krusty the Klown, in homage to the famous Jewish character on “The Simpsons.” Investigating the murder are Spottyman (a takeoff on “Watchmen’s” Rorschach) and Jewish lawyers Nite Nurse (Nite Owl) and Silk Taker (Silk Spectre).

Along the way are numerous insider references to the history of “Watchmen” and comics in general, with particular emphasis on the industry’s Jewish roots.

“It’s a parody of ‘Watchmen,’ the comic book and the movie, and also a satire on the comic book industry, how the artists and the industry worked together for the past 70 years,” Johnston says.

The Jewish theme worked perfectly, he adds, because the history of the comic book is filled with Jewish names—among them Captain America creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (born Jacob Kurtzberg), Superman’s Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and Batman’s Bob Kane (born Robert Kahn).

Siegel and Shuster even make an appearance in “Watchmensch,” in a flashback to the day when they famously sold the rights to the Superman character to DC Comics for a mere $130.

Because Johnston isn’t Jewish, he wanted to be sure he was making an accurate portrayal.

“Once I got [a Jewish element], I’d go online and make sure I got it right,” he says. “I was also able to run skits past a few [Jewish] friends.”

The Jewish elements include Yiddish terms and Chasidic-style clothing, with Spottyman sporting payes and a black hat, and Silk Taker in a modest, high-necked dress. A pet named Balabusta also has a cameo, as does a can of Dr. Brown’s black cherry soda, a classic Jewish icon.

Johnston says the irony is that “I give the most Jewish lines to Spottyman, who’s not Jewish. It’s this secret identity he’s put on.”

I know what you’re thinking. But the guy you’re actually looking for is Joshua Goldberg.

A playground that provides cover from Qassam rockets

I saw more than a few empty playgrounds when I visited Sderot in August 2007. With the constant barrage of rockets from Gaza, it’s just not safe for kids to play outside. But now, thanks to Stanley Chesley, president of the Jewish National Fund, they at least have an indoor alternative. From The New York Times:

“These kids can’t go to a park, so let’s build a park inside where they can go,” he remembered telling his colleague Russell F. Robinson, chief executive of the fund, a century-old Zionist organization that collects coins in blue metal boxes in synagogues and Jewish centers.

That is how a 21,000-square-foot bunker of a recreation center was born and came to be inaugurated this week in the industrial sector of this city. It has a small indoor soccer field, video games, fun-house mirrors, a climbing wall, rooms for birthday celebrations and $1.5 million worth of reinforced steel.

Israel went to war in late December to put an end to the rockets, and though it pummeled Gaza for three weeks, killing some 1,300 people and destroying hundreds of buildings, the rockets have not stopped. On Tuesday, five fell around the Sderot area. Since the war ended on Jan. 18, some 160 mortar rounds and rockets, including nine long-range ones, have been launched from Gaza at Israel.

So while the country’s leaders consider their options and their warplanes continue to hit arms-smuggling tunnels and to kill militant leaders in Gaza, and while Hamas tries to persuade Israel and the world to end the economic siege on Gaza that it says is the main motive for the rockets, children in Sderot now have a safe place to play.

Hmmmm … This article is about a rocket-reinforced playground in Sderot. A great thing. And yet: Israel comes off as both a big baby and a bully. Maybe it’s just the way I read this, but the structure of this story seems to suggest that Israel went to war, killing 1,300 people, because Israeli kids couldn’t play outside?

I’m not usually a believer in the anti-Israel media conspiracy. (Remember, that’s the same media that is supposedly controlled by The Jews.) But there is certainly fodder here for those who are so inclined.
