Jew Night

Once a year, Highland Park is converted into Chai-land Park for what might be the most gone-amok of all Jewish celebrations: \”Jew Night.\”\n\nMichael Perrick created a post-modern Borscht Belt bash that has become a local tradition for Jew and non-Jew alike.\n\n\”Every year, people ask me, \’So when is \’Jew Night?\’\” says the 34-year-old Silver Lake artist.\n\n\”Jew Night\” is all about wacked-out Jewish kitsch: the gyrating Jelvis (\”The Jewish Elvis\”); the Whirling Hors-Dervishes klezmer band; the Sinai Puppets; a Whack-a-Mohel game; bagel flinging; and even a Miss JAP contest where contestants are judged on hair, nails and whining. The biggest draw: \”Strip Dreydel.\” The Fourth Annual shtickfest will be hosted by Perrick\’s alter-kacker alter ego, Sye Goldstein.

Calabasas may sound like an unlikely origin for a rap magazine, especially one started by a young, Jewish teen.

Rabbi Jailed

A rabbi accused of molesting three boys at a Chabad elementary school was arrested Dec. 3 and remained at the L.A. Men\’s Central Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail as The Journal went to press.

Needful Things

Thanksgiving even manages to unite the disparate members of the Jewish tribe. Orthodox or secular, eating soy Tofurkey or kosher birds, we almost all mark the most spiritual of our American holidays.

Bringing Back Traditions

The new Reform guidelines for converts to Judaism will have little effect on the many Reform rabbis who already employ many of the traditional practices suggested.

Dear Rabbi

I have been taking on new mitzvot throughout the past years. I have begun wearing tzitzit regularly and have been working at becoming stricter concerning Shabbat.

Forging Ahead

For the past 37 summers, the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Los Angeles (BJE) has sent high school students to Israel through its pioneering L.A. Ulpan program.

Performing Torah

Kids Kehilla bills itself as \”a different kind of religious school.\” It is different partly because of its emphasis on theater as a way of introducing children to their Jewish heritage.
