It has been one year since a financial crisis engulfed the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Los Angeles (JCCGLA). In response to this crisis, JCCGLA was forced to close facilities, cut services and lay off scores of staff. Programs that served more than 1,000 people were discontinued. It was a very difficult year — but we survived.

Jonathan \”J.J.\” Greenberg, the executive director of the Jewish Life Network, died Saturday in Israel after his bicycle was struck by a car a day earlier.

Rabbi Philip Schroit, beloved rabbi of B\’nai David-Judea for 44 years and rabbi emeritus for 10 years, died Aug. 12 at the age of 79.

Maurice R. Commanday, an innovative engineer in the aircraft industry, a veteran of World War II and Israel\’s War of Independence, and an active supporter of the Freedom of Religion movement in Israel, died July 23 at the age of 84.

Eulogies:Elizabeth Mormorston Horowitz

Elizabeth Marmorston Horowitz, founding director of the USC Law School paralegal program and a Juvenile Court mediator, died July 21 of cancer. She was 72.

Eulogies:Irv Kaze

Irv Kaze, a KRLA Sportscaster and longtime sports executive, died suddenly from a heart attack Saturday, June 29, at the age of 75.

Still a ‘Hero’

Robert Clary doesn\’t really enjoy sitcoms. Even though he played the French sidekick on one of television\’s most unusual sitcoms, "Hogan\’s Heroes," the POW situation comedy (1965-71) set during World War II.

Eulogies

On May 27, 2001, artist Morris Aaron Feinerman died at the age of 80. Morris\’ passion was painting. He came to America as a young boy and lived in the Jewish neighborhoods of Brooklyn. His experience of discrimination and economic hardship led to a lifelong interest in ethnic art.

Obituaries

Barry Anisman abramson died Sept. 30, at the age of 52. He is survived by his son, Adam; brother, Jon ; sister, Mary Lou Yharra; and stepfather, John May. Groman Mortuary.\n
